Yes Mercedes ran it in the '50s with the 300 SLR, audi ran it at this years
Le mans, ans alfa romeo is coming out with a 2.0 JTI direct injected otto
engine

Anyway, the answer is YES.  I believe Mitsubishi has had it in production for a
few years.  I'm pretty sure that most auto companies, and major fuel-system
suppliers (Bosch, Delphi...) have been working on it too.  There are probably
other DI gas systems that are in production now, but I don't know whose.

General impression is that it improves mpg by 10% or so.
