The Pits Problem Solved Part II

by Je » Thu, 22 Feb 1996 04:00:00

Hi All!

Having climbed the mountains and spoken to the wise men we think we've
discovered why a percentage of you can't get files from The Pits.

In two words 'Proxy Server'

If you are using a Proxy server via you browser this could be the
cause of files stopping halfway or being corrupt.

I won't bore you with the technicalities, but if you disable the
server in the Netscape 'Network Settings' and try again you may solve
the problem.

As Jan said, we'll have a new server and an FTP site soon so hopefully
all the problems will go away.

I was reading the article "Hacking The Web" in the Winter '96 issue
of "Web Developer".  The first few paragraphs were about the time "The
Computer News Daily" site was hacked, and the connection to the site
was brought down to a crawl.  Everyone was getting slower and slower
access and download speeds until no one could acess the page at all.
When I read this, I thought of "The Pits" right away.  This might or
might not be the problem, but I'd look into it.

Anyway, sorry to get off the subject of auto simulators. :)
