Spec'ing up new PC

Hey all,

I wanna spec up a new system with N4 as primary target, but have lost
track of how the technologies go together etc.. If anyone can help
fill in the blanks I'd really appreciate it.....

CPU - Athlon 1.4ghz Socket A 266FSB (around 110 bar now?!)

Mobo - Dunno! Reccommendations? I have an ABIT right now which has
served well.. open to suggestions from someone with a 1.4 system.

Memory 256 of what... thinking 184DIMM PC2100. Would this fit the
above unknown Mobo?

GFX - a GEForce2 64mb... recommendations based on 1.4 speed? worth
going for a GeForce3?

Case - need anything special, for instance extra cooling, I don't
intend to play with overclocking?

OS - What's the deal with N4 and W2K Pro, is it supported/stable??

Think I can handle the rest just about, thanks very much in advance.

Here are my suggestions...

Good choice, power and price are good.

Are you after more reliability or a bit more speed? For reliability,
I'd suggest a VIA KT133A chipset mobo. Very tried and tested chipset.
I've got an Iwill kk266, which is super-stable. Other suggestions
would be an MSI k7t turbo or epox 8kta3.

IF you want an extra 5% performance boost, go for a DDR board. Bit
pricier, but the memory's not too expensive now. I'd only choose an
AMD 760 chipset board personnally, but the whole platform is not quite
as mature as the KT133a chipset. Go to www.anandtech.com for reviews
and suggestions. Make sure you get a quality board tho!!!!

With prices at the moment, get 256mb minimum. If you get a kt133a
board, get CAS2 pc133 RAM minimum, you get more speed this way. Or CAS
2.5 DDR RAM if you get a DDR board.

You won't see a huge boost in getting more than 256mb, (especially in
games) but more is always good. There can be some bugs with more than
512mb of RAM though.

Don't get an MX card, go for a GTS/PRO/Ultra, whatever fits the
budget. A gf3 is faster, but pretty damn pricey IMO. If you can afford
it tho, its the fastest.

I'd suggest a dual boot if you go win2000, go for win98 i games is
more hassle-free. Don't know about N4 for win2000 specifically though.

Other suggestion - get a 7200 rpm HDD, the speed boost is great.

HTH :D
