I've decided to purchase a steering wheel for Nascar2, which one should
I go with? Also what about the Thrustmaster Gamecard?

Dont get a gamecard, there out of date and an old technology.  Anything you
put in your ISA bus only hurts you system performance.  Especially a game
card....

Ive got the Nascar Po and like it a lot.  Plus, Thrustmaster is pretty good
about sending replacement parts (springs).

Rob, tell me more about why I should'nt have a game card, why are they "old
technology". I thought they were supposed to help game play. Could you
elaborate please?

Thanks

But then what do you use for 2-players? Are there any PCI gameports on the
market? Come to think of it are there any PCI soundcards on the market if you
are forced to use the MIDI port on the soundcard (or modem cards or network
cards)? Come to think of it, I don't have a spare PCI port in any case what
with the 2D card and 3D card and SCSI controller.

You could use a Y-splitter cable that feeds two joysticks into
one joystick port.

I would not go with a thrustmaster game card because you just really dont
need it if you already have a good enough of a game card (sound card with a
game port) already. About the wheel and peddle is hard to say. The t2 from
thustmaster is good but it has much latenency. The nascvar wheel is much
better but the peddle springs are horrible.

I agree...  I have a T2, and the Nascar Pro...  I like the pro, and I've
always had great support with TM,  the wheel gets loose from time to time,
but that just takes a little thread-lock and a screwdriver... the pedals get
soft after a while, but they still have a good feel to them...

And if you have a soundcard that was made in the last year or so...  the
game card is a little excessive.  My TM port sits on the shelf now after a
reign of 2 years.  Very good card, and fantastic support again,  but alas,
my slots are all full and it's just not a benefit any more.  It used to be
that the cards were subject to heavy drifting when they were in the 'warm'
environment of the sound card.  And many were just not that sensitive for
higher quality controls.  But my TM wheels are just fine even on an old SB16
and my 'newer' AWE32.  And the only place I ever had a problem with my
controls (which prompted me to get the ACM card) was in Mech Warrior 2.   I
haven't played that in a year so out came the ACM, in went the NIC for my
cable modem.  PCI is occupied by SCSI, 2D, 3D and my DVD decoder...  I need
a PII just so I can have the AGP port to free up one PCI for my Awe64PCI,
then comes the SCSI/10 100 Combo card, so I can kick all the ISA devices out
of my PC....  Any one got a grand or so to spare? :-)

Not if you wheel uses 3-axes and not if you're using a SoundBlaster AWE-32 MIDI
port. I've never got a "Y" splitter to work.

My game card is a massive improvement over not using it. Why not?

I`m very happy with the difference myself, maybe not a massive
improvement, but enough to warrant the expense anyway, and I did not
have any distinct probs before I installed it (drifting calibration
etc.), but my steering became less twitchy and my driving more
consistent :-)

Performance ? hm.......

I thought that unless you got rid of ALL your ISA cards, it didn`t
matter any performance wise, haven`t read that it makes THAT much
difference anyway, but if you know otherwise Rob, please tell, one
learns something new every day I guess.

Thomas Enterprises makes the TSW2 (http://www.tsw2.com). Its a very
economic and durable wheel. The feel of the wheel is solid, and the
pedals are easy to use. Plus, with the quick change pot plugs, for the
soldering-impaired :-), its one of the easiest wheels to maintain. I'd
definitely recommend looking into this wheel!!!

Thrustmaster and ECCI make really good wheels too. I've used the GP1 and
T2 extensively and have tried the ECCI at friends houses. They're all
solid wheels. You've got the find the right product within your budget
that has all the "features" you want.
