I'm 47 as of Wednesday, and usually I don't dig this sort of music either
(I'm an old fashioned Eagles, Bob Segar, Tom Petty, Who, Aerosmith, etc...
kinda guy).
But I like this song, and I know why.
It's not the words. It's not the lead guitar.
It's the chord progression.
I learned about 10 years ago from my Guitar Instructor that Minor Chord
progressions promote 'anticipation', and some of the best songs ever written
use Minor Chord progressions heavily.
It's one of the primary reasons why Don Felders (one of the most brilliant
guitarists who never gets the respect he deserves) work with the Eagles
"Hotel California" is considered brilliant, and most people don't really
understand why they like it so much :) Let's face it, it isn't the Lyrics
LOL. Of course the lead sections (especially the end-of-song lead duel
between Felder and Walsh) add to the song as well. Walsh was responsible
for writing much of that closing lead duel, but the main song construction
and chord progressions were all Felder (according to history).
"So Cold" by Breaking Benjamin sounds like it uses a strong minor chord
progression and that's probably why it appeals to me.
I've listened to samples of most of their other songs since I saw this
video, and guess what. I don't care for them :)
I've been analyzing this since the day I was told this, and I'll be damned
if my instructor wasn't right.
