Virus Alert For All Internet Users !!!!

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Defense Department temporarily cut off public
access to most of
its Web sites on Monday to ensure that they are protected against the ``Code
Red'' computer
virus, some versions of which display the slogan ``Hacked by Chinese!'' on
infected Internet
sites.
``Most DOD (Department of Defense (news - web sites)) Web sites will not be
accessible by the
public until this worm no longer poses any threat to DOD networks,'' said
Lt. Col. Catherine
Abbott, a Pentagon (news - web sites) spokeswoman.
Technicians are working to determine whether security patches needed to fix
the problem
previously had been installed, Abbott said.
``To protect the DOD Web sites from being compromised, DOD organizations
have been
directed to review the status of their Internet information servers to
ensure that the appropriate
patches were previously installed,'' she said.
The ``Code Red'' virus, which is technically a self-propagating worm, first
surfaced last week,
according to Marc Maiffret, chief hacking officer at security software
company eEye Digital
Security.
``Since then, at least 300,000 sites have infected, including a large number
of U.S. government
and U.S. military Web servers,'' Maiffret said.
Code Red is programmed to start replicating itself on the first day of the
month, so it could start
spreading again next month, Maiffret said.
The White House last week averted a planned ``Code Red'' attack on its Web
site, the home
page for the Bush administration, security experts said.

I've read that Code Red is only an issue for IIS
servers.

So, I suppose if you run an IIS server.....

Virus warning, go to Windows update !

The CodeRed Worm affects Microsoft Index Server 2.0 and the Windows 2000
Indexing service on computers running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Windows
2000 that run IIS 4.0 and 5.0 Web servers. The worm uses a known buffer
overflow vulnerability contained in the file Idq.dll. Information about this
vulnerability and a Microsoft patch is located at:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-033.asp

System administrators are encouraged to apply the Microsoft patch to prevent
infection from this worm and other unauthorized access.

This virus CAN NOT effect users with Win 95, Win 98, ME

Virus warning, go to Windows update !

It is potentially very serious and is VERY real. Here is a story on
Yahoo:

http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20010731/ts/tech_codered_dc_11.html

And TechTV:

http://www.techtv.com/news/story/0,24195,3339749,00.html

And CNN:

http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/internet/07/30/code.red/index.html

This is very real and could be a very large problem for those who are
running MS Internet Information Server. It will not effect end users
at all, but could potentially bring the internet to a crawl with all
the traffic it could generate.
