GPL: Is it possible to be quick with a stick?

by Chris Bloo » Tue, 07 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I recently bought a Microsoft Sidewinder precision pro Joystick, I was
contemplating a wheel and pedals but took into consideration the fact that
I also enjoy flight simulators and other games and cannot afford a wheel
and stick.

I am very pleased with my purchase and GPL is fun to drive with the
joystick, is it possible though to be as quick with a joystick as a
pedals/wheel combo?  I still need lots more practice till I find out for
myself:)

Some of the top "hot laps" are by joystick users, but I imagine they are
using a stick and pedals.  I use just a stick, and I feel like I have hit
a wall in terms of speed.  Without the division of throttle/brake from
steering, even the most sensitive use of a joystick will never match stick
and pedals.

What lap times are you meaning when you suggest you have hit a wall?
Kyalami and Monza for instance?  What do you use for throttle and brake?  I
use the trigger buttons instead of pushing forwards and backwards on the
stick.

All courses.  I'm missing several seconds on the top drivers.  Using the
buttons for throttle and brake automatically turns on a form of ABS and
traction control, and your lap times can never be as good as using a full
analog control.  I use fore/aft for gas and brake and can control it
pretty well, but I am just a touch cautious because a stick used this way
is very sensitive to small errors.

Mike Lasky is the only really quick driver I know of who only uses a
joystick (he's the driver of the sample Kyalami replay on the GPL CD). It's
quite a sight to see Mike abusing his joystick but I wouldn't really
recommend it as a means of control ;-)

Cheers,
Richard

I have been able to run 1:28 at Monza with a stick and no pedals. Sure it's
possible with practice..

I was actually slower after converting to a wheel for months.

Ever heard of Sir Wolfgang Woeger? <g> Yup, he uses joystick only....

Well I will be happy to get anywhere near those sort of times, so I guess
that answers my question.

Thanks

I drive in the same way as you do, by manipulating the joystick to
influence steering, acceleration and braking, and only use buttons for
changing gears.  I'm certainly not as fast as the real hotlappers,
though I would say my times aren't bad being, possibly like yourself, 2
to 3 seconds off the fastest laps.

I still don't know if there are limitations with this method as I'm
still improving.  I'm not sure what sort of times Chris is aiming for,
but as a couple of examples off the top of my head I have done:-

1:20.3 at Kayalami
1:28.3 at Monza
1:25.7 at Zandvoort
1:57.8 at Rouen

God, I feel slow now.  I use a wheel and pedals (no force feedback) and I have
run a total of THREE laps at Monza in the 1:28 range.  The rest are mid to low
1:29s.  I just can't find the speed at Monza.  Don't know why.  Watkins Glen on
the other hand...I am pretty good there.  I run 1:05s consistently and I have
hit 1:04 in practice once.  I just won my first race against the AI at Kyalami,
best lap of about 1:22.0.  That's one of my favorite tracks now.  If only I
could get a sub 9 minute lap at the Nburgring, I'd be happy.  :-)  Well, that
and if I could remember how the hell I went so fast at Spa with GPL 1.0 (3:20
best lap).  I'm tired of running 3:26s and such!

Well I've just had a good look at that replay and I am going to have another
good look and try to work out where I can find those extra 5 seconds.  I
guess there is still plenty of speed to find in my stick.

You feel slow at 1:29?!?  Try 1:31...I'm in the next TIME zone...
