MEDICAL UPDATE (7:39 p.m. CT): Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver Memo
Gidley, who was involved in a serious single-car incident on Lap 21 of
Sunday's Motorola 220 at Road America, sustained a small fracture of the
non-weight bearing portion of his right femur, according to Dr. Steve Olvey,
CART director of medical affairs. The updated medical condition came
following further examination and precautionary X-rays at St. Nicolas
Hospital in Sheboygan, Wis. Olvey said that Gidley was expected to utilize
crutches upon his release from the hospital later this evening. According to
Olvey, Gidley will meet with Dr. Terry Trammell, CART's chief orthopedic
consultant, in Indianapolis Monday for further evaluation of the injury.
Trammell's examination will assist in determining whether Gidley will be
able to compete in the FedEx Championship Series' next event, the Molson
Indy Vancouver on Sunday, Sept. 2, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Gidley, a 31-year-old American from San Rafael, California, was making his
seventh start for Target Chip Ganassi Racing this season. He debuted with
the team in Portland as the replacement for rookie Nicolas Minassian and
earned a career-best finish of second the following race at Cleveland.
Gidley, in his third season, ranks 18th in FedEx Series championship with 29
points.

Slightly worse than what was said on telly, but still pretty good
considering the impact - seemed even worse than MS's crash at
Silverstone.

So when do they expect him to race again, given that the fracture is
of a non-weight bearing portion of his leg?

As a biomechanical engineer, I would be curious to know where exactly this
"non-weight bearing" part of the femur can be found?  I've certainly never
heard of it!

Sounded ridiculous to me too, but who am I to judge? Maybe they are
trying to downplay it's significance?

Was it my imagination, or did the close up of the wall which took the brunt
of the impact have a blurred, reverse copy of the word "Target" from the
side-pod?
