GPL: CD --> 2004

by Jon » Sun, 25 Jan 2004 11:51:16

Hi guys

I've been playing n2003 quite a bit and havent got around to (re)installing
GPL since a few years back. I've got the motivation now as a friend is
interested, and looking at those great pics at the GPL track DB page (thanks
to that guy) has really re-kindled my interest to. I have a 1.4ath system
with a geforce2 64mb. my friend is the same but slightly up the road with
geforce4 4200i (?).

Anyways, does anyone have a link, or kind enough to list step-by-step what
is needed to turn a basic GPL install into that beautiful looking sim one
can see through that site? I dont think i'd know where to start! Is there
perhaps one big super patch?! Not likely I know, and apologies if this has
been asked lately - but im sure others would

Can someone then suggest the best x # of tracks worth getting, that will
easily add into the GPL season without having to manage the ini file / leave
ones out.

thanks in advance.

This will get GPL running and patched correctly.

Download and install the cars from GPLEA

http://gplea.racesimcentral.com/

Magnus' GPL Tracks Database will lead you to the 300+ addon tracks.

http://trackdb.d2g.com/?

GPL++ will keep you busy for days downloading and installing addons for
tracks, cars, graphis, utilities, etc.

http://www.gplpp.com/

And of course, you'll need program covers for all those new tracks you
downloaded ;-)

Good Luck!

Brilliant. Couldn't have asked for a better reply. Also thanks to the people
in the thread discussing backup/restore of a GPL install. I'm thinking once
i done this for me, i'll unzip my backed up install over my friends'
installation.

Thanks again

There *is* a "superpatch" floating around somewhere.  I've seen it but never
tried it, and have no idea how old it is or if it works, but Don's
suggestions certainly offer more options.

The all in one patch is here
http://trackdb.d2g.com/all-in-one.asp
which gets you up to v1.2.0.2

Cars are at http://gplea.racesimcentral.com

There are hundreds of tracks though. You're probably better off sticking
with the basic 11 for starters. Graphic addons for those are here
http://fredfaster.m4driving.sm/main_eng.htm along with a beginners guide.

Jon -

Look at the thread "GPL:Step by step add-on site?" posted a week or so
ago. Don't use the all-in-one patch, there are better cars out
there...

The all in one patch doesn't contain any cars.
It just has the cpufix, D3D and OGL patches.

And for reference, the best cars are the GPLEA ones.

thanks to everyone in this thread and the other one i started.

I've just got around to patching up GPL and all is well, just this minute
added in the sounds from GPLEA as the originals were crackling a lot so i
might still have a sounds issue, but it's all looking much more "1967 in
2004"

couple of quick question: the mega patch doesnt address the renaming of the
coventry and masurama, in the menus, and im not 100% bothered, but would be
nice to sort this out..

is there a patch to sort out the resolution of the menu screens- or are we
all stuck with whatever it ever was?

anything else im missing? i have good knowledge of the tracks from my time
with the game a few years back, so might like to add in a few just for
getting a feel of what is now aesthetically possible these days. I seem to
remember 64 was a limit, and that u have to get around this by managing the
season ini ? Its probably a dumb q: to try and ask people for their top 3,
5, 10, 50! but suggestions definitely welcome!

thanks
Jon

I *think* the original patch that did this was made obsolete by the
1.2.0.2 fast CPU patch. I've left mine as-is for the lasrt year or so.
If it's anywhere it'll be on gplpp though ;-)

No. The Menus run at 640x480 and this is fixed. I run gpl with OpenGL in
a window using:

[ Rasterizer ]
fullScreen = 0

In my core.ini, and run gpl at the same resolution as my desktop. My old
monitor used to have a hissy fit every time it had to change resolution
& I just got into the habit of running in windowed mode. Press the
windows key to get your mouse back if it dissapears when you start gpl.
You can't join a race via vroc & run in a window either btw, so connect
manually or put up with 640x480 unfortunately.

Snett67 is a must-have, imo it's practically the 12th papy track as far
as useability is concerned ;-)

Mostly I just get tracks as I need them for league races, but depending
on your track preference, you should find the Isle of Man a great
challenge, and Milano great fun on-line.

You're right about the 64 track limit, there are several utilities for
managing your tracks.
