LWFF is "draggier" - crapping out?

by Tim » Sun, 18 Feb 2001 01:49:31

My first generation Wingman FF has recently developed a funny feel.
The forces don't seem to be affected, but the wheel turning seems to
have lost some smoothness, and it's making some noise when turned.
It's not binding or anything, more like dry parts rubbing.
I can't tell if its the steering shaft rubbing on the case causing
this sensation, or if it's something in the cable setup.

I'm thinking about opening it up to take a look.
It exhibits the symptoms powered or not, so I will be able to tell
immediately if I've found the problem. Is it a big deal to just open
the case and check things out? I'm not a mechanical nincompoop or
anything, but from what I've read, I have this vision of cables and
springs flying everywhere as soon as I open the case. :-)

I think you're referring to http://members.nbci.com/JensSchu/

BTW, Deja's archive has been bought by Google.  The recent archives are at
http://groups.google.com/ powered by Google's wicked-fast search engine.
Apparently, the whole archive is to be put back online which even Deja
wasn't doing for the last year or so.

Dale.

Thanks guys. I also remembered that site but had lost the link.
I'll probably open it up this weekend and see if I can find the cause.

Tim,

There's a needle-bearing conversion that might solve yer problem.  Don't
have the URL.

Still working in the needle bearings, only have ball bearings right now ;-)

Tim,
Take off the cover (easy job) and watch the alignment of the cables while
turning the wheel between it's dead ends.
Don't take out the wheelstop for that (that steel plate thingie on the main
shaft), otherwise the cables could jump off.

I suspect two things:
1. the nylon coating of the cable is worn out and starts to peel off - you can
carefully peel off all the coating when disassembling the wheel or
2. the cable-pack is misaligned at the smaller (left) pulley, upper location.

For more info and help you could sign up at the LWFF-forum.
