4way Speaker system

Ok, a little off topic, but I"m sure someone can help me.

I'm in desperate need of a decent set os speakers.  My older ones have had
it, and I want to get a halfway decent set.

I have an older Diamond MX300 sound card with 4 way output (two stereo
outputs).

I've seen a set of Logitech S30 ( I think that's the model number) with 4
speakers and a subwoofer.  That's what I'm looking for and around that price
range  ($200 aus)

Does anyone know of any good speakers of around that price range?  I'm
looking for 4 decent speakers and a subby for racing games, but also VCD's
and DVDs in a smallish room.

Thanks in advance,

James

James,

Everybody (except one disaffected user) seems to love the Klipsch 4.1s (abt.
$400US).  I've had two sets of the Creative/Cambridge FPS digitals (only 2
channels), which were remarkably clear and artifact-free, but both had PCB
problems & died, otherwise I'd recommend the Inspire 5.1 series (abt.
$100US, a fantastic price...even if they don't include
digital--SPDIF--inputs).

There are some decent systems, from Logi, JBL & others.  If money is an
object, you might try getting a mid-price 2.1 system for the front and a
cheaper 2.1 system for the rear channels (I saw a Labtech Surge system
marked down to $19US the other day).

The MX300 did a better job of surround sound than did Creative's EAX
standard does today.  But is *is* yestertech.

James,

Altec Lansing also has a new low-end 5.1 setup.  Or check Amazon.com--they
have the Boston Acoustics BA4800 for a low, low $135US.  I've always liked
the Boston sound...altho it's probably better suited to William Boyce than
Max Payne.

I read that those new logi's give the Klipsch's a run for top choice & at a
fraction of the cost.  I have the ProMedia 4.1's myself.

James,
The small Cambridge audio setups marketed by Creative give a great
sound for a modest cost. The 2+subwoofer can be had for as little as A$70 at
Oz P.C. markets and I thinks the 4+subwoofer models is around A$135. I can
heartily recommend them - for music as well as games.

Altec Lansing ADA890( I think) THX certified great sounding speakers
and sub.

I was going to buy the Klipsch Pro Medias till I heard a set of Logitech's
new Z-560's.  Picked up the Logi's about 2 months ago and haven't been
disappointed since.  I mostly use them for games and MP3's but they should
also be great for DVD's.  They sell for about half the cost of the Pro
Medias (about US$200) and IMHO offer excellent value.

I just picked up a set of Cambridge Sounds (Creative) FPS-2000
speakers for $69 US from Creative! They are refurbs, but they are also
almost 50% off retail.

http://www.americas.creative.com/shop/shopcategory.asp?Category=180

The FPS-2000 is a four channel w/sub digital setup. They also sell a
non-didgital system for $10 less. I don't know if you can get them in
AUS or not. They sound great. I have them connected to a SBLive! and
with an environment sound that really roars. I can even set the volumn
low enough that it does not keep the wife up at night! Not as fun as
blasting the 1967 F1 cars, but better than the two channel Yamaha
cheap speakers that I had been using. The sub behind the seat in the
pod really adds to the overall feel of the game. I just wish that we
could get a patch for GPL to get some of the improvements that have
been made to N4, like EAX sound. N4 sounds great, but then again, I
find it way to stale for me.

Actually, the Klipsch ProMedia 4.1's are $299.

The new ProMedia 5.1's are $399.  I don't think you can do better than
these.

Well, I can't help but always recommend the Klipsch ProMedia's first, but...

I think the new Logitech's are darned good for $200, from what I hear.  They
are the 560's or something like that.  Very powerful for the money.

You also might consider upgrading your sound card to something more modern.
You don't have to spend a lot.  For $79, you can get the Turtle Beach Santa
Cruz, which IMHO is one of the best cards money can buy.  It even supports
5.1 if you feel the need.  I find it a lot better sounding, and a HELL of a
lot more reliable, than the Creative Cards.

That's still 4X as expensive as the Creative/Cambridge Inspire 5.1 5300s,
with no center channel...and still no digital input.  If only the C/Cs
weren't so badly made....

Um, compare the power capabilities :)

The #1 thing that has un-impressed me about any of the Creative/Cambridge
sets is the power output.  They are pretty weak.

grates on the ear.

BTW, the only negative comment I've ever seen abt. the Klipsches (since the
little audio magazines complained abt. peaks & resonances in their
traditional folded-horn baffles back in the 1950s, that is) was one guy who
said they were physically flimsy--a knob fell off or something.

Do you suppose anybody but us reading this thread anymore?

Flimsy?

I would call the Klipsch's anything but flimsy :)

Maybe he didn't like the tactile 'feel' of the volume control or something
:)

Geez, the 5.1's are 59 pounds!
