Geoff actually said in a magazine (I think it's called PC Action Gold,
special racing edition) that he is working on Grand Prix 3.  He never
mentioned Microprose AFAIK is involved in the creation of the game.

He said it would use Gp2's game engine (not starting from scratch) and make
it so that it would use the biggest hardware-working possible, like Gp2 was.
He also said that he is checking all the 3d Accelerator brands (Glide,
OpenGL, D3D, Rendition, etc..) possible to add it to Gp3.

Btw, where is my OpenGL version of Nascar2 ;-)

Ok, what is going on here....we have the combined knowledge of RAS
users.....
Doe's any one really know if there (ever) will be a GP3?  Has any one
spoken to Geoff Crammond?  Is he working on a successor to (the
brilliant) GP2?  Or is he enjoying himself to much, spending all that
money he has earned?

Its no good asking Micropose.  Maybe Geoff has parted company from them
anyhow?

More questions than answers. Plenty of rumors, how about some hard
facts.

Doe's any one really know.......?

The latest word is YES. It will be an "updated" GP2 with all the things
that GP2 should have hadalong with 3DFX support. So I hear.

If he doesn't know what grpahics cards/APIs to implement at this
stage, then I think we are all in for a bit of a wait.....and it
better be worth it! :)

% 3) It will push the hardware to the max! Perhaps with 3D accel. support

Please, please don't push hardware to the max!  That was one of the
pitfalls of GP2, it is still pushing hardware to the MAX and hardware
has leapfrogged itself since GP2's release!  Let's at least push the
envelope, but make sure it fits in an envelope. ;-)

I'd say as long as it runs on the then equivalent of a 3dfx and
i200mmx at 640 x 480 and 16 bit colour with minimal graphics options
I'll be happy. An 800 x 600 (or maybe 1024 x 768) mode with 32 bit
colour option would be good to at least have a look at to see what we'd
be using in about 4 or 5 years :)

I should have pointed out that "runs" means 30fps AFAIK.

I spoke to someone on IRC who claims to live very near Geoff. They said
they had visited him to get information on GP3, but all they could
establish was that he _was_ making GP3 and Geoff was keeping his cards
close to his chest. They did however get the impression GP3 may not come
through Microprose, therefore forcing it to be renamed (similar to the
Kick Off debacle of a few years back).

Still, you know what IRC is like... ;)

Geoff Crammond did a 3 page exclusive interveiw with PC Format
magazine (in their Spring 1998 "PC FORMAT GOLD special racing games
edition").

In the interveiw he states that he is working on GP3, and that
he is not about to start from scratch with GP3, but he will continue
to refine the code used in GP2. He also mentioned that he was
interested to see what 3D cards are capable of?

So there you have it, from the man himself, GP3 *IS* in development,
but there is no firm release date as yet.

Even if there was a date, it wouldn't really make any difference.
Remember the countless "firm" release dates for GP2?
And, anyway, GP2 is still one of the most enjoyable games for me, and
that's not only because of Geoff's work, but also because of the great
hacking community that has kept discorering and developing stuff for it.
I bet that GP3, if it ever comes out, will be just as uncustomiseable as
GP2 was. And why, anyway??? Quake built its strength on the ease of
accessability of its features. One reason could be that it's actually
rather hard to write some nice piece of software where everything is
interchangeable, but I actually think that the reason is another: Geoff,
as good as he definately is, is actually quite jealous of its creations,
and does not want them to be altered by anyone... That's my guess.

Mickey
