ATI Cat 3.9 and GPL

by bhoeni » Tue, 02 Dec 2003 02:43:00

After holding out for some time, I just upgraded to the ATI Cat 3.9
driver for my Radeon 9700 Pro in order to maximize my framrates in a new
flight sim (LOMAC).  Now it seems that the image quality in GPL has
worsened.  Although the framerate itself is fine, I find that the edges
of the track kind of "shimmer".  It's very distracting.

So, if anyone her is is using the CAT 3.9 drivers with the same vidcard
as myself with GPL, I'd like to hear what settings (ATI and GPL) you run
GPL at and if you notice the same thing.

Or, if anyone has any suggestions to try to make the image improve, I'd
appreciate that as well.

Thanks.

I don't play GPL, but I would imagine enabling FSAA&AF would sort that
out.

Thanks for the suggestion, but FSAA and AF are already both enables at 4X
each.

There is a known issue with the 3.9 Cats and GPL. FSAA does not work.

Well that bites.  I haven't tried GPL lately, but FSAA worked fine with
GPL in earlier Cats.

Well, that sucks.  Thanks for the info, though.

I guess that I'll try Cat 3.7 then (if I can find them).  I read somewhere that
3.8 had problems, as well.

I use the 3.8's with no problems at all.

You might try the Omega drivers Bert.

about your issue.

The reason I won't switch to ATI despite the nice hardware design.  Half the
software on my system has one problem or another with ATI drivers...and it
rotates around each time a new driver is released.  nVIDIA just doesn't have
these problems for my software.

If you don't switch how would you know half of your software has issues?
Youre living in the past.  ATI drivers have been rock solid for a couple
years now and the Omega version just plain rocks.  If you like your Nvidia
(***imo) fine but don't start making stuff up (or continuing a false
rumor) about ATI to justify your decision.

Ive never been happier about any video card Ive owned than Ive been with my
9700P AIW.  It just plain does what it was advertised to do perfectly.  I
went from a GF2 to a GF3 and the performance difference was negligible.
Going from the GF3 to the 9700P was a real eye opener.  In hindsight I
should have just skipped the GF3.  Nvidia are the kings of marketing (better
known as BS) but end users that have actually used both cards know the real
deal.

Ditto Mitch,  the 9700pro was the best video card purchase I have
ever made, well except that dual SLI mode 3dfx setup in years past
was way cool :)

Same here. I forgot just how good ATI looks.  FPS isn't the only thing that
matters.
