I think the sim's drivability is excellent ... very accurate! All this
critisism is obviously by those that have not raced real cars and/or
written any code.

I have done both ( not at the same time ) and the accomplishment is
not lost on me.

Imagine spending that kind of effort to create something great, only
to be nit-picked to death about features that are missing.

The time was obviously spent making sure that the sim accurately
represented driving an F1 car with thousands of variables involved.

I think it was time well spent!

Allright Glenn!!

My thoughts EXACTLY! I've been following this group for a long
time waiting for GP2 to arrive, and I really was amazed at all the
***in' about how long it was taking to get completed. The sim is
great, the gripes are lousy! Get with it people this is a tremendous
accomplishment!

Tahnks for your time

Don't get me wrong, GP2 is a _great_ game. Unfortunately it is really
a great 1994/5 game. In many ways (physics model, sheer enjoyment)  it
is a couple of generations ahead of the competition, but it makes no
use of current video technology and inherits far too much from F1GP1.

I'm still spending several hours a day trying to master it, but I
can't help thinking that the long delays in getting it released have
meant that it has slightly missed the boat. I fully expect NASCAR 2 to
be better in the graphics front whilst GP2 _should_ have had a lead on
the competition of at least a couple of years, just like Revs and
F1GP1 had.

The one really good thing about the delay is that it does set the
standard for bug free games. One or two real bugs have been mentioned
(results & replays showing different things) but I haven't seen them
yet. Everything else is as designed, although we might not necessarily
agree with the design decisions <g>. Makes a refreshing change to most
of the current crop of games.

Well, if you don't want to complain about GP2 then why don't you stop
your ***in about those that find it less than adequate in many areas
<g>.

Seriously though, there are problems with the score keeping.  I
haven't nailed it down yet, but from my experience and other's posts
it seems that when one finishes more than a lap down the finishing
place is incorrect.  Today, my position was showing as fifth for the
last few laps of a 50% race.  The final results showed me at 14th
place.  The cars that were ahead and behind me showed as 4th and 5th.
A major bug like this deserves some complaining!

Also, for a sim that portends to be realistic, if someone turns their
frame rate up to 30 fps and gets 300% PO, you cannot realisticly
compare lap times to someone running at 100% PO (which is real-time).
The reaction times required are completely different for the two
cases.

Leaving aside cosmetic details, I think that at least exactness in
scoring should be paramount in any "realistic sim".

I should add however, that even if my finishing place didn't show up
correctly, I still enjoyed the race.

Dave.

[snip]

As I have mentioned before, the game is not bug-free.  I have crashed it 5
or 6 times.  Driving in a race, touched wheels with another car, got one
side of the car up around 45 degrees and....it locks up.  Tight.  The
sound card emits a pulsing squeal and it is big time locked.  Power
switch locked.

I like the game a lot, more and more as I play it, but this is definitely
a bigger problem than any of the ICR2 stuff.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Well, I do have a friend who suffers from occasional crashes. In his
case, I believe (haven't seen it myself) that it dumps him back to DOS
with a DOS4GW error message. Since he found it to be slightly worse
when he had his P90 overclocked to a P100, I can't help thinking that
it might be due to some sort of timing / memory error. But there
again, none of his other programs or Windows has any problem at either
90 or 100MHz, so it could well be something else.

I've also had similar problems on my machine, its so bad I ususlly only
get about 3-5 minutes racing before crashing.  Sometimes an error is
printed:
DOS4GW Unexpected Switch to Real Mode, (or protected mode, I forget
which at
the moment).  In the CONFIG.SYS/AUTOEXEC.BAT I only load the CDROM
drivers
and nothing else at all, no FILES=.., STACKS=.. etc.  I experimented
with
various setups and programs, e.g. smartdrv etc. with no joy.

A friend has similar problems, but not always with an
error printed.  Both machines only have 8Meg RAM, one a P75, the other a
P100.

This leads to the interesting point that although the box says 8Meg is
sufficient, the install program requires 8Meg on top of the Base memory.

Any ideas, anyone made gp2 run reliably on an 8meg dos box

Yeah, like I said somewhere else I've got a P75 (now overclocked
to P90) with 8M and it works no problem.  I've got win95 installed
but either drop out of win95 boot and process the setup files
manually (just a frig for the moment) or reboot from win95 using
the DOS mode options with appropriate lines in the config and
autoexec files for mounting the CD.

Like I say, no problems, nice fast (VGA) game.

Rich.
