Does the REAL F1 cars use mph or kph ????

Hi,

Just so that my GP2 driving models are as realistic as possible I'd like to
know whether the real F1 cars use MILES per hour or KILOMETERS per hour on
their dashboard display ??

replay via email.

I kind of suspect that they use neither. The speed of the car is not
of any particular relevence to a driver - rpm is though.

I don't think F1 cars have speedos, just the rev lights.
I know at least one of them (not sure which) doesn't even have gear
indicators -- only a light to signal 3rd.  The driver knows
instinctively which gear he's in and shouldn't ever need to look at
the dash (unless a warning light comes on!)
If there is one it comes down to driver preference.

Oh, and the stereo and Stu Allen tape rack is normally located just
above the ash tray.

PS Mmm don't have any 'replays' to give.

The telemetry output that FORD provided to ESPN years ago was in KPH. I have
switched from MPH to KPH. MOre impressive that way. ie I do 311KPH down the back
straight at Monza :-)

I suggest a change in setups (wings). This speed should be around 330
KPH!!

That's nothing, I can get 333KPH (206MPH) down the first straight
at Hockenheim ;-)

Cheers,

Thanks, I guess that explains why I only got a 1:26.585... I'll try lowering it
more.

I wonder if that is still true, with the pitlane speed limits. Yes,
that have a switch which is meant to limit their speed to that limit,
but as Hakkinen will tell you, that switch isn't always good.

As I heard in a race telecast, Murray Walker said that the cause of pit
lane speed limit infringement is drivers didn't hit the limiter button in
time. Another cause I can think of is probably the limiter is not very
accurate, which is quite unlikely.

Geez, I haven't gotten past about 184MPH.  Then again, I'm just using the
stock setups...<g>

F1 drivers don't need to know how fast they are going,so I don't think
you will find a speedometer in the***pit...however..for our Sim
purposes, since F1 is primarily a European Circus, you should be using
Kilometers.

I recall that when Schumi drove the Benetton, you could see in the
in-car pictures that there were two LCD-display's. One for the gear
and the other for the speed (in kph).
Don't know if it is still being used, however.

Schumacher. He said that he need it for the max. curvespeed. He can better remember
speed as rpm. Regular in F1 is no speed display.
