something very weird is going on.  I swear these guys are tuning their
engines.  I've tried reinstalling (to get a fresh AI) several times,
and after around five races, their cars suddenly get an extra 10 HP
(at least).  it's not a corner exit or slipstreaming issue either.
I'll come out of a corner five meters behind an AI car, with a better
speed, catching up to him and eating up the difference, and suddenly
he'll just start pulling away.

am I making any sense?

I think you're close. To me they seem to go into the corners deeper before
braking and make fewer mistakes coming out. The cars are slower at first,
but I think it's just nervous AI drivers afraid to gun it. After a few races
they are as fast, but not faster, than my car. They also seem to look out
for you a little better as they drive more, as far as side swiping. But they
still ram you going into corners no matter how much experience they have. I
haven't noticed them pulling away on the straights, though.

when I think about it, my symptoms match up with not being able to
give full throttle.  does anyone know if I can get a numerical readout
on throttle position to see if it's stuck at 97% or somesuch?
