CDROM Drive Question

by TlgtrPr » Fri, 31 May 2002 03:59:31

I am thinking of replacing my "regular" CD Rom drive with a burner.  I seem to
remember past post's about problems with having 2 drives.  The question
is--should I just add a burner (I have room..)..or replace the current drive
with a burner.  I am not much of a "hardware guy" so any help appreciated. TIA

Adding a burner is typically not a problem so long as you have the space for
it on your IDE channel. I have succesfully used 2 IDE drives (one CDROM one
CD-R) in the same machine and on the same IDE channel before with no
problems.

My current setup is a SCSI CD-ROM drive and IDE burner which sounds like it
does not match your specs, but you should be fine dependant on your mobo
capabilities and amount of IDE devices already present.

You won't have a problem, just install cd burner as master and cdrom drive
as slave.

Same setup here, CDRW as master and CDROM as slave. No problems except I
can't get sound from the CDROM...and yes, the sound cable is connected :-)

"don hodgdon"
There should be a digital output on the newer drives, that can produce
sound for one while you pipe analog out of the older cable on the other
drive.
FWIW, ms media player, uses a wav sound for my cd music when I play it
there  and the music cable is NOT connected.  Sounds bad, pauses when the
computer is busy, but works...check your wave volume slider and see if it's
muted.  Then see if your second drive has the digital out...and your
soundcard has a digital input..
good luck

Dave is right, I have one of my drives (CD-RW, Plextor IDE) using the old
analog sound to soundcard cable and the other (my CDROM, Plextor UltraPlex
SCSI) using the digital out to the digital in on my soundcard (SB Audigy).
Works great. Most newer drives and sound cards I have found to have these
digital I/Os. May even be the old SPDIF connections, dunno.

You have one connected to auxiliary and the other to cd connectors on the
sound card? Maybe you have auxiliary turned off in the mixer properties.

You have DMA turned on for all IDE devices? Pausing sound and video is
usualy caused by not having DMA on.

My Santa Cruz has that feature under WinXP only. I can set it to play back
through the PCI bus (digital) or through the analog cables. Under Win98
though there is no such option and it plays through the analog cables.

Why would it sound bad Dave? It's pure digital after all.....

I use digital for both my cd's, sounds a dam sight better than the poxy old
analog cable I used to use.

Scott A.

check your wave volume slider and see if it's

Check the sound control panel options and see if you somehow enabled digital
audio only.  I forget the exact term for it...

I have a Pioneer DVD-106s slot-loading DVD as the Primary, and a TDK 321040
Burner as the secondary.  Works fine.

Make SURE you enable the DMA option in your hardware settings or you may run
into trouble doing cd-to-burner copies without first caching the whole thing
to disk.

Digital can sound just as bad as analog (even worse) if the digital stream
is interrupted.

If you have Digital Satellite TV, remember what happens to the picture when
a big thundercloud blocks your sat dish?  The picture gets all blocky,
jerky, and the sound can screech bad enough to scare the cat.

I'm not asking for me, cuz I know, but could you explain to other users
where and how to check the dma settings for your soundcard?
Say an Asus motherboard, with an Audigy <wink wink>

In Win2K and XP it's done differently than in the old 9x OS's.

It's set under each individual IDE controller port.

I'd post a picture, but I'd be run out of town if I did....

1.  Open the Device Manager.
2.  Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers section.
3.  Double-Click on the Secondary IDE Channel.
4.  Click on the Advanced Settings Tab.
5.  Set both ports to Auto Detection and DMA if available.
6.  Repeat for the Secondary IDE Channel.
7.  Restart.
8.  Go back into the device manager, and see what you ended up with.

Most devices today handle DMA just fine.  However, they may show different
_modes_ of DMA.
