Is it possible to learn how to drive a manual gearbox with
racing games?  What game most accurately allows one to learn?  Can you
stall and everything just like in the real world.  Since I don't use
the brake that often in racing games :), I'd like to map the clutch to
it and give it a go.  I want to learn how so I can drive my brothers
car, but he won't let me touch it till I know how.  But how am I gonna
learn if I can't drive it.

I don't know of any racing game that allows you to stall the engine.  IMO
this would be an easy thing to program into the code and don't see why they
don't put it in, or even an option to turn stallable engines on or off.

In view of using the clutch, "racing" games by definition are going to
involve driving "racing" cars which will probably have very different
clutches to normal road cars.  I suggest you just get your brother to take
you out to an empty road somewhere and just practise.

I cant stop my "sim" from stalling - I am going to have to model a clutch
soon ;)

Your brother certainly read Catch 22.

I'm not sure if any sim to date has the stalling due to dropping
theclutch to fast modelled. However, even if it did, it would be fairly
useless for managing the one in a real car. See, until the clutch is
fully engaged, apart from listening to the revs, you also balance the
clutch input based on the acceleration of the car as the two are
directly connected. Feeling the acceleration is sorely missing in racing
sims.

Grand Prix Legends, Nascar 4 demo and Grand Prix 3 all provide an
analogue clutch, though, so at least some practice can be had there,
even though you cannot properly stall any of them. But doing it in a
real car is a completely different experience.

Not only no game models stalling engines, but you unless you have an RS
Shifter, its not so realistic. Also you cant crunch gears (i dont think,
havent used clutch or rs shifter b4) in any sim, which in a game like GPL
would make it much more realistic. Wouldnt it be great to have a FF
H-Pattern shifter. U can feel it when it crunches, and it wont let you slam
it through gears without the clutch unless done properly. Oneday
hopefully... :) Good luck with your brother, almost everyone who drives a
manual has learned in a street car on the street which was most proberly not
theirs.

The approach most take is to go out in a proper driving instructors car
with dual controls before you take on the family car.

You can stall the engine in Nascar Heat although I won't say it's modeled
enough to really teach you how to drive a clutch in real life. I wouldn't
expect your brother to let you take the car just because you told him you
learned to drive a clutch in a computer sim/game any ways.  You'd be better
off learning from the car your going to drive in the first place.
Every time you get into a different car with a clutch, it takes a little
time to get used to it's feel any ways.  Ask your brother if he'll go up to
the school parking lot and let you practice with him. If he won't do that,
he probably doesn't want you or anyone to drive his car any ways and is just
using it as an excuse not to let you drive it.  If it's his pride and joy,
it's kinda hard to blame him.  I have an old Triumph motorcycle I won't let
anyone drive except my older brother. But I hate it when he wants to cause I
worry about something happening even though he has more experience on a bike
then I do.

Viper racing is another one. You need to use the clutch to shift too,
unlike NH. You will "grind the gears" and it won't shift to the next
gear if you don't use the clutch properly.

Viper racing is your best bet, like Alan says.  Try the options/hack
page for different cars like Sedan for a FWD or Sports Car if your
brother has a NSX :-)

You can buy Viper online for under $10 at http://www.dragon.ca if you
can't find it on the shelf.

I forgot about the shifter too.  After buying the wheel, shifter,
games etc. it's probably cheaper to buy a beat up old 5-speed and
crash it up till my hearts content.

Is this game old?  I've never heard of it.  So you race nothing but
Dodge vipers I guess.

Viper Racing is made by MGI, some of their programmers broke off from
Papyrus.  They wrote Nascar Heat too.  MGI is right up there with Papy
in the physics department :-)  It just seems Papy knows what we're
looking for in multiplayer.
