$3400 Worth of Warez?

by Michael R Sisso » Wed, 24 Jan 2001 09:12:13

Is that what is taking place in the binaries group? I checked out the www
site for Mitchell on Demand, and that how much this 13 CD set costs. I
suppose it is not too much for a professional app.

Just asking... it feels weird to have software snatching going on so
close to 'home' (yup, r.a.s. is my fav and most oft visited newsgroup).

P.s., I know warez'ing must be going on all around me on the net, but I
don't go looking for it and rarely see it. Outta sight, outta mind.

Warez is everywhere, like it or not. I have mized feelings about it
myself... bad for the software companies financially, but then again, some
companies dont deserve a red cent for the poor products they have been
releasing. And in all seriousness, how many warez copies of a title do you
think get downloaded? A very small percentage to what is actually sold. The
everage Joe consumer doesnt know about warez or where to even start to get
warez. I would say the Quake games are the most warez'd products and
Id-Software shows no sign of faltering finacially.

But, most warez groups actually plead with the downloader to purchase the
software if they like it and plan on using it regularly. Even they would
prefer the companies get their money in the long run.

$3400 is cheaper than the hardcopy version.

They issue updates every six months or so, so we have stacks of old
CD sets, and I keep wondering if there's a "master CD": that you need
to install the software or if you can just install from the update disks.

Not that I'd try it, though... at any rate, most of our shops have switched
to the DVD-ROM version.  It used to come on 12 disks, which was
perfect when we'd use a pair of Pioneer 6-disk changers, but with 13
disks you have to either buy a third drive, or swap disks sometimes.
With the DVD version this problem does not exist, I think it all fits
on one disk.

Valid point, but you never know if it is worth t or not 'till you try right?
Im not defending Warez in any way, each has his own opinion on it and I am
no different.

Whoa... blast from the past. You do realise it would take 1849 floppies (or
god knows how many cassette tapes) to store GPL for a C64, don't you? ;-)

And with the C64's loading times, even on floppy disk (us non-c64
users laughed many times over the c64 gang who had to use turbo tape
for the floppy:)) it would probably take a day or two to
install... let alone load a track. :)
