Best way to run under Win95?

by Andy Gart » Thu, 31 Jul 1997 04:00:00

Hello all,

I'm just in the process of buying a new machine which will
have Win95 only (i.e. no F4 reboot to DOS option).  Is the
best way to run Papyrus games to boot using a DOS floppy?  Or
will the Win95 "restart the computer in MSDOS mode" work
just as well?

Can I even run from within Win95 in any practical way?

I'd appreciate any tips as to how to extract maximum
performance from my machine.

Thanks,
Andy

I suggest getting a program like system commander and putting old dos
on first, (get win95 upgrade disks) and then putting on win95.

Install nascar into Windows then edit the shortcut for nascar Racing 2
so the that game drops to dos (Win95 Dos) to play. REMEMBER to run
setup from dos so that your sound works correctly. Also remember to
load a mouse via the dosstart.bat file or the game will not boot.

I have been running Nascar2 in Win95 ever since the game came out and I
don't have any trouble running the game. I just go to my game icon and
it runs without any problems.

Why not just run it from Win95???  I always start Nascar2 from Win95 so I don't
have to load additonal mouse drivers and sound card intitialization strings,
etc. Windows handles it just fine, and when I'm done, close the program, and
boom, I'm back in windows without waiting for a boot up. But, before you run the
game, run the setup.exe while you're in DOS to configure the sound.

There is still a DOS under Win 95. Just press the F8 key to
display a menu of Bootup choices. If you choose to boot
directly into Dos then you will need to setup your mouse, sound
card and CD-rom to run in Dos in a similar way they did on
your current machine. Yes Restarting the computer in MSDOS
mode will work just as well but once again you will need to
load in the drivers for DOS. That is done with a batch file
called DOSSTART.BAT  which resides in the Windows directory.
It does the same as the Autoexec.bat file.
If you need more help feel free to E-mail me.
