Please help with DMA

by Mikel753 » Fri, 28 Feb 1997 04:00:00

I have an Award BIOS 4.51 that I just updated to 2-16-97 version
I am running it on a Jet-Board j-656VXB motherboard with a Cyrix 166+
32 megs memory and a Screamin'3d.   N2rend runs like complete ***and
ICR2 runs well with INDYSAFE But Locks with INDYFAST as wellas does
NASREND -dma.  DMATEST gives me an error that it's turned off by either
BIIOS or O/S
so I have no DMA.  I can't find any settings in BIOS that let me specify
DMA or PCI latency. Can someone please help me. Is it because I have a
Cyrix? I haven't been able to find any real info about this on the net.
Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Either restart Win95 in MS-DOS mode (don't boot straight to DOS) or run
DMAdiag before playing.  Either of these should enable DMA.  Get
DMAdiag from my utilities web page.

DMA version of the games do not work with Cyrix/IBM 686 CPU.  That truely
sucks because those 686 CPUs rock in Win95.

I went ahead and got myself a Pentium.  DMA actually works, and it works
rather well.

With some of the changes Award has been making to their 4.51 BIOS, one
might need to run DMAdiag even if restarting Win95 in MS-DOS mode.  Get
the utility, but do not try running it in a DOS "box" in Win95.  Only
use it in a pure DOS environment.  Just run it as part of the boot-up
process and the DMA should be enabled until you reboot.

Actually with Eric Busch's help, I've got Nascar2 running with DMA but I'm
still having problems with ICR2 (Indyfast) I do get 45-50 FPS while
running Indysafe.
I do get very low scores with DMADIAG
28.006blah blah  DMA

I guess this is an appropriate "add on" here ;)

I'm running a Cyrix 586 120....   I just did get the Intense3D board, and
the RENDDMA.BAT file works.... but hick-ups.   the graphics are clear and
smooth (very nice!)  but the input from my T2 seams to be picking up an
interruption... I HAVE to calibrate every time I start up.     It is
playable, but frustrating to have invested in this card, specifically for
this game, and it doesn't run perfectly.  If I even suggest getting an
Intel MB/CPU, my wife WILL cut my life short (LOL).

With the card I got ICR2, which runs flawlessly.... using INDYSAFE.BAT...
INDYFAST doesn't work.   However, the indysafe mode is nice.

Keeping an ear to the track...

The Cyrix, DMA, and joystick problem is known, and there is no
solution for it. (For a longer technical discussion of exactly why,
look on www.dejanews.com for my prior post in this group.)
