OT: Anybody use Teranews?

Over the weekend my cable internet service was assimilated by Comcast,
who in their infinite stupidity have decided not to supply a Usenet
server.  I am currently accessing this group through Google.com, but I
hate web interfaces and would much prefer to use my newsreader.
However since I am already paying $45 a month for cable (yes they
raised the price too) I do not want to pay for a premium news server.
So far the most promising thing I have been able to find is Teranews,
at www.teranews.com.  Does anyone here use Teranews?  I'm a little put
off by the fact that they require a credit card number (for age
verification!?!?!) during sign up, even though they say they will not
charge it.  I would like to know if this is a reliable service or just
another internet scam.

TIA,
Haqsau

Do you have old CC statements laying around with a now unused number?  Give
'em that, if you're lucky all they do is validate the number against the
particular CC's number algorithm.  I have a old cancelled AmEx number I use
for these purposes :)

Search for "teranews fraud" at
http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search  there's a few hits...

Hal,

Here's a previous post I did for news.mho***.com which is a free
newsgroup server to access this and many other ng's. Not much in the
binaries, so if your looking complete binary service you will probably have
to pay.

If your news server short changes you on retention, use news.mho***.com
as they have longer retention. Just make sure that you bump up your
preference in your news reader to more days retention.

OE > Options > Maintenance Tab > Delete News Messages <240> days. Or just
uncheck the box.

I can see posts back to the end of May 2001 with those settings.

Also some handy links for UseNet

http://www.racesimcentral.net/; << another free service, needs registration
though.

I use news.cis.dfn.de - it's a free news server from a German university.
Just type that in to your browser, and it will walk you through the signup
process, no CC required.  No binaries, but it seems pretty complete
otherwise.

That's a winner!  I had completely forgotten about mho***.  I even
had an account already set up for them in my newsreader, but forgot that
it was there.  I might still sign up with Teranews for the binaries
access, but mho*** seems to have just about everything else I used.
Also thanks for the other links, too.  ;o)

I use this one too.  It's very impressive.  I often wonder what's in it for
these guys to offer a free server - no ads or anything?

Yeah, me too - keep wondering when they'll realise they're not making
anything on it, but also keep hoping that my German last name keeps me on
the "good" list :^)
