NFSSE w/o CD?

Has anyone been able to get this game to play w/o the CD. I tried to
hexedit the paths.dat file to point to all the directories I moved to the
hard disk yet it failed to work. I even tried to copy the contents of the
CD to my HD and installed it from there without success. I'm trying to get
this game to run on my laptop w/ a 6x CD, yet the CD stops spinning when
not being accessed. when NFSSE requires data from it, there is a hesitation
which can be fatal when going
150+mph. Thanks

well, if you have enough space.... copy the entire CD onto your HDD!
and then use a program called "fakecd" to bypass the cdrom and
make the computer think your cdrom is a directory somewhere on your HDD.
I did it and been running extremely fast!!! but then again, I have wayyy
too much space.

Anyway, anyone knows how to make the game faster when playing over a SERIAL
cable????
it seems like steering is too slow and messed up.

about 540 Mbytes.
