Hi folks.  You may recall me having posted here several times in
the past, about what sort of simulations would be nice to have,
and then adding that I'm drooling over the sims you do have, as
I've never owned a PC (currently on a 1985-tech Amiga).

Well, all that may change.  A friend has offered to sell me his
system.  Since I know I'll want a system to run stuff like ICR2
and NASCAR Racing, and you lot undoubtedly know how they run on
what sort of systems, I humbly request any comments you may have
about how they'll run on this system.  Here's what I know of it:

It's an Acer with an AMD 120 MHz 486 processor.  It has 12MB RAM
and a 1GB EIDE hard drive.  A Soundblaster 16 card, VLB SVGA card
with 2MB video RAM.  VLB EIDE HD controller plus 2 serial, 1 parallel,
1 game and 1 secondary IDE port.  A 4x CD ROM, and a single 1.44MB
floppy drive.  Win95 installed.

We haven't discussed price yet, so if you can suggest any offers I
might make, that'd be appreciated as well.

I'll want to get a steering wheel/flightstick and pedals.  Are those
ports enough, or is that listing just what the controller adds to
whatever the system may have in it already (a mini-tower case)?

If this turns out to be something I get, I'll definitely need some
kind, experienced soul to help me get the hardware and software set
up to go racin', so if you wouldn't mind me writing email questions
should the need arise, please say so.  I have very, very little
experience with PCs.  I've gone from VIC-20, C-64 to Amiga -- never
used a PC.  Given their hodgepodge nature, I'm sure there'll be a
lot of confounding quirks to discover.

Very nice system, indeed.

New, I could find that system for you at around $1600.  Used, $1000 - $1200 is
fair.  That should start the negotiations.

You'll want a speed-adjustable game card.  I recommend the ThrustMaster ACM
card at around $30.  I also recommend the TM Formula T2 wheel/pedal combo and
the FLCS stick and TQS throttle.  Note:  these items aren't cheap..but you'll
only buy them once.  TM has incredible customer support.

Feel free to email me at the address below...it's what I do. :)

The system is _okay_, but investing a lot of money in a 486 is a BAD
idea at the moment. If you're sure you won't upgrade for a couple of
years it's worthwhile, but far better to buy a cheap P-100 system. Even
in the UK I can buy a P-120 system for around 850 ($1300-$1400).

I would recommend a TSW, the Thomas Super Wheel. A home-grown American
product and an absolutely fabulous wheel/pedal unit. The after sales
service is second to none.

No problem. I've built a LOT of PCs from components, everything from
286s to Pentium-Pros and I'll happily answer any questions you have.

Cheers!
John
