...to give you a good time! Just finished a fantastic pickup VROC
race there (Int Short as usual) on [that server I keep forgetting the
name of that has a <=200ms latency limit], and am wet enough to drown
an elephant!

In brief, I'd qualified 3rd (in my Ferrari) behind J Penn (Lotus, I
think) and David Few (Brabham), and got a decent start for once to be
2nd by the end of the Esses. Penn then flew off the road for no
apparent reason :))) Bit of a s***(ie crash) going on behind, so
put in some strong laps (including a 1:05.89, my first 1:05.xx for
ages, which ended up as the race FL) to pull out a 16 second lead
with 8 laps to run.

Then had a bit of brainfade and clipped the Armco at the Speed Trap.
Kept it on the road, but steering was slightly damaged - the car was
now ***y hard to turn right, which is a bit of a problem with bends
like the Glen's! From 1:06-ish, my laptimes were now in the mid 1:07s
at best - and Few was on my trail!

7 laps to go - 15 second lead; 6 laps - 13 seconds; 5 laps - 11
seconds. Then a warp took an extra second out of my lead (thanks a
bunch, BT Internet!) - 3 laps to go - 6 seconds; 2 laps to go - 3
seconds (thanks to a small wobble on my part); and as we started the
last lap Few was right on my tail.

You know the feeling - concentrating so hard your brain feels like
it's going to explode any second, and trying not to think too hard
about the growing size of the car in the mirror. The Loop was, oh
thank you thank you thank you, negotiated, and only the final corner
remained. On paper it's easy - shut the door early, and get a halfway
decent run to the line. But I, of course, ran slightly wide and let
Few have a look up the inside. Only one thing to do in a spot like
this - floor it and hope.

I made it - by 0.14 second! In the first half of the race, I didn't
have a lap (except the first) slower than 1:07: after my nudge, I
didn't have one faster than 1:07. If I'd made that mistake half a lap
earlier, I'd have lost. Still, I'm not complaining. :D An excellent
one-two for Team David, too :-)

Cheers, nomail. I ought to update it a bit, I suppose - most people
can keep a steady 36fps now, and it might be useful to mention one or
two other factors, such as avoiding Monza if you want to have a race
with no^H^H fewer idiots!
