My concern is not with the functionality per se, which as you imply is the
same as any other *** server. My concern is with the ability of small
development team to be able to perform a thourough security risk analysis
during the development process.

WSC is owned by empire, and is basically being sat on by them

Well you can use canned direct play code and pretty much be done with our
major effort.

Yes and no.   THe code for TIR is new, but the licensed products, the
cars, the tracks, the sponsors, the signage, are all taken from the WSC
license contracts.

(my Xfile mentality thinks this may have been the plan all along.  Buy a
work in progress, then slap your own code underneath after the WSC legal
team did all the work.)

Gotcha.

My hope would be that the server app is released as either source code
or as binaries for linux/freebsd/solaris and that it binds to a high
port, both of which I'd think are likely (IIRC they've indicated there
will be a linux server app, dunno if it will be a binary or source -
I'd prefer the latter)..  That way you can just run it as an
unpriveliged user, which immediately eliminates most of the security
concern, at least on the server side.

My biggest concern with the net code really is efficiency.  Papy's
28.8 friendly model wasn't built in a day.

Wait - wouldn't Empire own the licenses, cars, etc. since they still own WSC?
It seems pretty dumb that they would negotiate all that, but give it away...

they didn't give it away...Empire is the publisher of Total Immersion
Racing aren't they??   They got all the legal work done for WSC, and then
when the West's couldn't/wouldn't deliver an arcade title, they took all the
tracks, the cars, etc and slammed them into TIR.

I hope they at least bought them dinner first!  And possibly a
tasteful movie, a romantic comedy maybe.
