Hey all..
How Can I reset my KDS XF-7p Monitor?
In the onscreen menu, there's a "RECALL" function, which (according to the
manual) resets to factory defaults. This is not the case at all, and some of
the time "recall" just simply horizontally stretches the picture out more
and more. Makes no sense...
Here's the problem:
I loaded up new Video Card drivers (lastest for radeon 7500), and the
computer reset. When it booted back up, the monitor needed adjusting. So I
did that through the controls on the front of the monitor. I usually have to
do this with new video cards, or changing to new resolutions for the first
time.
Once I got everything set, the picture was really distorted (stretched in
certain places). The middle of the screen and the bottom is vertically
stretched, while the top 1/3 gets progressively squished. There's no
controls on the front to make this sort of a problem, let alone fix it.
I've tried to get rid of the drivers (both video card and monitor), with no
results. The same monitor on a different computer shows the exact same
problem, and a different monitor on the same computer shows a perfect
picture. So it can only be the monitor.
I was hoping there was a way to "reset" the monitor, as though I just got it
out of the box again. It's only 6 months old or so, and I've never had a
problem with it yet.
Thanks!
Mike

That sounds like a Pincushion problem. Your monitor 'should' have
adjustments for it...I don't know if ATI has software settings to control
this problem.
You might want to try changing your refresh rate.

The monitor only has adjustments for "Side-Pin" and "Pin-Balance". Neither
of which can fix this problem..
I don't know if I described it quite right, so I'll try again..
It reaches the horizontal and vertical edges just fine (so, the picture is a
square). But more of the information is vertically compressed at the top
1/3, and the bottom 2/3 of the picture is vertically stretched. So, while
I'm reading this message, the top few lines the text seems to be
not-as-tall, and the last lines are significantly taller.
I also tried the refresh rates, and they all had the same problem :(

On my KDS monitor to, reset/recall, you press and hold the up and down
buttons.

I tried holding down almost every combination of the 5 buttons on the front
for like 30 seconds each, with no luck :(

Here's what I can think of to check......(and I would guess you've already
done these things....but, heck....here goes anyway):
1. Hit the "degauss" - just to make sure.
2. You have not moved something with a big magnet (like a large speaker)
near the monitor?
3. The power cord is securely fastened at both ends (the wall outlet, plug
strip....and the back of the monitor).
4. When you "swapped" monitors....did you also try swapping the cabling?
5. You've reduced the overall picture size so you know for sure where the
"edges" of the monitor are (and are not distorted).
6. You've tried reinstalling the drivers for the monitor (and got "fresh"
ones from the KDS site).
7. Does changing the "refresh rate" change the distortion pattern in any
way? If it doesn't, I'd say you have a bad power supply or a bad electron
gun. That should be covered under warranty and KDS is pretty good about
just giving you another monitor (I've had two KDS monitors go bad, within
warranty - both because of bad power supplies).
That's all I can think of......sorry.

I think most CRT-type monitors are becoming something of a commodity item.
Especially considering the price of 21" monitors today, compared to even a
couple years ago (lower now by a couple thousand dollars).
I have used KDS, NEC and ADI monitors over the last few years (probably a
dozen or so of each). Within that group, the NEC monitors are the best in
terms of pure graphic quality. However, if you use your computer primarily
for gaming, the KDS monitors are more than adequate, especially considering
their lower price. However, individual models within any product line can
be of more - or less - value and you can't just buy anything....and be safe.
Research is tedious, but it pays off in the long run. I have had hardware
problems with all three companies....all three responded appropriately with
repairs and replacements. However, I've not bought anything but NEC
monitors now for about two years.....so I should caution that my
"experience" with KDS and ADI is getting a bit dated.
Hope that's helpful.....

It's also _possible_ that the high-voltage section of your monitor decided
to go south as a coincidence...
Screwed up pictures like that are almost refresh or high-voltage related.

Now, I just need to remember the name of it. Damn...
Hold on a sec...
Ok, I'm back.
My Mitsubishi calls this "Vertical Line" and "Verticle Line Balance". I
don't think that's the name I've seen it under before, though.
I know exactly what you are talking about now...
