Sad to read, but perhaps just as well that there is finally some
closure. Although RSC was the glue that held simracing together as we
knew it for many years, it had long ago lost it's foothold. For the
GPL community, I think it's time for the Simracing MirrorZone to
become the community home for GPL. Bill Cooper's Speedgeezers family
has stepped forward over the last couple of years to fill in the gaps
left by the RSC situation, and should now be looked to as 'the' place
for GPL.

..and all because a couple of hard drives failed.

Well, I suspect if more of us had contributed more often they could have afforded a
more robust/reliable solution. I did make a small contribution when it came back
last time, but it was clear there was no big appetite (from myself or others) to
contribute regularly.
But then I was never a huge RSC visitor, although in the last year or so it became
a useful place to keep in touch with iRacing when I wasn't signed up. I'll miss
visiting there as an option, but every cloud has a silver lining. Maybe now more of
us will be more inclined to post here.
Mind you, I believe newsgroups are getting more 'popular' as pirates are elbowed
off peer-to-peer. Eventually more newsgroup providers will get tired of hosting
illegal files and make access even harder for legitimate text use.
Of course most weeks who'd notice the difference between no posts because there's
no server and no posts because there are no posters? :-)

I think they pissed a lot of people off with their gay moderation system.

Assuming that there's not yet another wave of ISP's dropping usenet.
Although I don't think there's many left that still do anyways is there?
Doing backups properly doesn't require any significant amount of money.
Only the will and a bit of time. 10 R/W CD's and a bit of thought can
handle it easily.

True, and it's the 2nd time it happened to them, this time with more
dire consequences than the 1st time. I would have thought they would
have learnt about the necessity of creating offsite backups every once
in a while, and be it by plugging in a $100 external usb drive and
copying stuff over...
All the best, Uwe

I agree, this was no longer a place where a critical eye could be cast
on "things SIM racing." It was a special interest party for a few
dickheads and the main guy over there was leading the censorship. Good
riddance.

What was his user name. I had a couple of altercations with him and thought
he was a stupid cunt.
I'd have to log on to tell you that but he was a European living in SE Asia.

Call me a luddite, but I never knew what was wrong with usenet myself,
many ISPs and google maintain them for free. It's not like dancing
emoticons and graphic avitars added value to peoples posts
