Lost Windows 98SE product key after reinstall

Rolf Wesemann reinstalled Windows 98SE on his GPL machine but had lost the product ID. One reply hinted at finding keys online, prompting tongue-in-cheek disapproval; others pointed to the OEM sticker on the case or tools such as Belarc Advisor. He got the system running again.

Hi, this is a little bit off topic, but I need help: Did a windows 98SE reinstall on my GPL Computer and, then came the question about the ID No. I cannot find it, because I have switched the original Paperbox of my original Windows98SE to a Plastic box and it seems, I have thrown the paperbox with the ID No. away. I have a second version of original Windows 98SE (Two Computers=2 systems ;-)) and: the same here. Where can I find an ID No.??? Because its saturday and no GPL the weekend is hard!!! Thanks in advance, Rolf [email hidden]
Buddy, you are ascrewed without that ID. I know that sucks to hear but you'll have to get another 'copy' Where do you live? -- Tim White www.intracmotorsports.com "Rolf Wesemann" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:amhtgc$j6n$02$[email hidden]... You're looking for a windows 98SE serial number right? Search google for "Windows 98SE Serial Number". Or possibly search kazaa for "Windows 98SE Key Gen". You didn't hear it from me though.. :) Mike http://mikebeauchamp.com "Rolf Wesemann" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:amhtgc$j6n$02$[email hidden]... > Hi, > this is a little bit off topic, but I need help: > Did a windows 98SE reinstall on my GPL Computer and, then came thequestion > about the ID No. I cannot find it, because I have switched the original > Paperbox of my original Windows98SE to a Plastic box and it seems, I have > thrown the paperbox with the ID No. away. Oh dear! "Shocking..." was an ironic response to the comment "You didn't hear it from me though.. :)" bearing in mind this newsgroup's general approach to copied software. As you rightly point out this is not like a "help me I seem to have lost my N2002 key" plea! It was not intended seriously. The lack of a smiley might convey the dead pan way it was intended or it might just be taken seriously. Obviously the latter, which is my mistake. Cheers Tony

We don't know that....not that I care anyways, and yes, Win98SE is available if people want to buy it, it's just not available as a "genuine" OEM option anymore, if I want to sell a PC with W98 I have to buy a CD and install from that, which is both more cumbersome and more expensive than just installing it from the server and slapping a sticker on it Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--

I peel the sticker off the cardboard sleeve and put it INSIDE the front of a jewel case along with the CD. I also take a Sharpie and write the number on the CD as well! buzard "ymenard" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:bT6j9.11585$[email hidden]...

Just a long shot. Did your copy come with the machine you bought or did you buy your windows software seperately? If it is an oem version as supplied with the machine by the manufacturer, you might find a sticker on the back of your computer case containing the code MS "Rolf Wesemann" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:amhtgc$j6n$02$[email hidden]... > Hi, > this is a little bit off topic, but I need help: > Did a windows 98SE reinstall on my GPL Computer and, then came thequestion > about the ID No. I cannot find it, because I have switched the original > Paperbox of my original Windows98SE to a Plastic box and it seems, I have > thrown the paperbox with the ID No. away. Win98SE is probably the best of the 9x/ME series. It's generally the most stable. The problem is that Microsoft is soon dropping support. There will soon be no new patches for any security or other problems. Newer software may not work with it. I ran into a problem at work where I couldn't install sound drivers under Win98 (original). I don't see any real difference between it and SE, but I was forced to upgrade just to get the sound to work! -- If there is a no_junk in my address, please REMOVE it before replying! It came with the computer. What is like a joke: I have two original Window SEs from two machines and had no idea, where I left the IDs :-)). But now, it's running with a little help. Its always a problem with IDs. From now on, I will write the ID on a sticker an glue it at the back of the machine!!! Thanks to someone, greetings to anyone Rolf didn't think, I started such a long thread, hehe

Download BelArc Advisor, run it, and it will give you your Product ID. Hopefully you can still boot into Safe Mode. I have an Excell Spreadsheet with all of my serial numbers. I also mark it on the original CD's. AND I make stickers and attach them to the manuals that came with it. -Larry "Rolf Wesemann" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:amkmt4$95u$02$[email hidden]... > It came with the computer. Yeah but if you can't install the OS, how can you load Excel or a backup CD to read them? ;-P (I know I know, read them on another PC but hey don't mess with my lame joke eh) -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- http://ymenard.cjb.net/ -- This announcement is brought to you by the Shimago-Dominguez Corporation - helping America into the New World...

On my *copies* of Win98SE, the serial number was printed on the cover of the users manuals and not on the box. If you have the small paperback book (with a holgram somewhere on it), look on the front cover above the bar code.
