I just read thru HCSR magazine 'Racing with XP' article by Chris Hassler (HCSR issue 1) and I'm abit confused about this Sidewinder thing..... What exactly is the Sidewinder 'profiler' problem and how can I work around it? I read something about Sidewinder software version 4.0 being compatible - but I cannot seem to find any place to download it... ? I am planning on installing a non-usb MSFF on my new Win XP pro system.... will that work or should I start shopping for a new wheel too?? Thanks! -- ed_

Ed, the wheel works in XP, but you can't use the profiler. Which means that the wheel can only work in split axis and un-mapped buttons, so it works with GPL and N2002 (but my XP installation doesn't) and other titles with proper steering configuration. -- Olav Malmin remove .spam when replying
To further expand, it is the game port controllers which have the problem because they require .vxd formats on the files. That format isn't supported in Windows XP, because, like the controller industry, the focus is on USB devices. The industry itself moved to USB devices more than three years ago, and wants us to all buy their USB controllers. That said, Windows XP does work with game port devices, however you cannot install the supporting software for them. The support needs to come from within the individual games themselves (even editing certain *.ini or player.* files to enable force feedback) for the modifications. Best choice is to save up the coins and opt for a USB device when you can. -- Chris H.
