Why tobacco liveries were missing at the US Grand Prix

Brad Larocque asked why Ferrari and BAR ran without tobacco logos at Indianapolis while McLaren carried West branding. Replies explained that the US tobacco settlement limited each brand to sponsoring one series, with Marlboro committed to Penske in the IRL, and that West was not sold in the US. The thread turned into a discussion of quitting smoking.

McLaren was plastered with their West logos, so why weren't Ferrari and BAR covered with the usual tobacco marks?
Marlboro already advertises in the US with the Penske IRL team, so they can't advertise with the F1 cars. I assume that British American Racing's Tobacco money is also already tied up with a stateside sport.(are the BAR brands owned by Winston Salem?) And finally without any research, I would guess WEST brand has no other ties to US events and is therefore free to advertise here. If they had even some West sponsored rowboats here in the states, that might have precluded using their logos at the USGP. So I'm assuming they have no other presence commercially here. dave henrie "Brad Larocque" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > McLaren was plastered with their West logos, so why weren't Ferrari and > BAR covered with the usual tobacco marks? >

If you're right, it's pretty ironic that because Marlboro sponsors a team in the IRL which is built around the trademark which is Indy, other cars aren't allowed to fly the Marlboro logo when racing at said track I understand the intentions but it sure looks kinda stupid in this case Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ "A man is only as old as the woman he feels" --Groucho Marx--

allows each brand (or is it company?) to sponsor a team in only one raceing series. Since the biggest raceing event in the US is argueably the classic Indianapolis 500 in May (and therefore most attractive to advertisers) much of the tobacco industry is commited to the IRL. Tobacco money probably has a lot to do with the movement of several CART teams to the IRL in recent years. Marboro already sponsors the Penske IRL team, Winston-Salem is moving there with the new Micheal Andretti team, the British American tobacco company sponsors the Players team in CART, don't know about Benson &Hedges. West doesn't presently have any advertising presence in a USA raceing series so is free to run their livery on the McLaren - Mercedes. My best guess of the situation David

Same reason why Winston is having/had to pull out a drag racing. They could not sponsor two series so they sure were not going to drop Nascar. It is even tougher in Canada where Players has to get out all together although they are looking at creative ways of getting around that. If you noticed when Penske was in CART and went to race in Indy, they had to take Marlboro off of everything including the uniforms. -- Brian Tate Communications Officer CART Toyota Atlantic Championship http://www.toyotaatlantic.com http://www.cart.com "Goy Larsen" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > > > Dave Henrie wrote: > > > > Marlboro already advertises in the US with the Penske IRL team, so they > > can't advertise with the F1 cars. We've got plenty more that make those seem sane. Basically a few years ago the Big Tabacco companies got caught lying to Congress. They ended up with a huge lawsuit from most of the individual States. To settle the suits, Tabacco agreed to limit it's exposure to one sporting series per year. That's why when Helio Castro-Neves won the Indy race two years ago, his Penske car was blank, because, at the time, Team Penske raced in the CART series not the IRL(which runs the Indy 500) This is also the same law that prompted Penske to switch from CART to the irl so that when Helio was given the race win through less than ethical rulings, his car could be seen with Marlboro splattered all over it. dave henrie

Oh I understand Marlboro's choice in this case, doing anything else would be rather silly of them, it's just looks weird that because Marlboro is allowed to sponsor only one racing series in the US, currently the IRL, it means that when the international F1 circus arrives at what is the arguably one of the most famous racing tracks in the world and round which the IRL is built after all, the F1 cars can't display the Marlboro logo..... that shouldn't seem like a bother to F1 teams though. The races in Britain and france have all the tobacco logos removed too. So its not like this is the only race where it happens Goy Larsen wrote:

I thought that all West advertising had something to do with teddy bears not tobacco What Racing Legends has got to do with F1 I have no idea. You have to give it to those guys, getting Ron Dennis to support their vapourware! Cool eh. Andi. The intent was to limit the exposure of a death industry. I beleive that after another year or two the lieing rat bastards will have to cease all sporting event advertising...so teams like Penske that swapped their entire operation over to the IRL to follow the cancer-cash will be out of $$ shortly. For a very cursory view of the story behind the Settlement, see Russel Crowe's movie: The Insider, with Al Pacino and Christopher Plummer. Mikey Andretti took the CART Team Kool Green to Indy(IRL) for next year and Kool just announced they are getting out of Racing advertising completely. Who's gonna foot Mikey's bills now?? Gotta buy new tubs, new engines, new drivers...Cool! dave henrie

Something tells me, though, that Penske will have absolutely no trouble getting another sponsor. Didn't Paul Tracy run a Mobil1-sponsored Penske when he first ran with them in 1992? I wouldn't be surprised to see the Penskes running in blue-and-white again should the cancer-cash be pulled from racing... > Mikey Andretti took the CART Team Kool Green to Indy(IRL) for next > year and Kool just announced they are getting out of Racing advertising > completely. A week ago they were saying that Toyota might pay $30 million for Newman-Haas to go to the IRL. The Andretti/Green - Honda deal should be similar (if not more, to pay for Michael's and Dario's salaries). Well, if you stopped smoking that long ago try it for once again. Sometimes, when I've had a couple too much at a party or so, I have a fag. You relax. Your arms feel all funny, hanging down from your shoulders. You experience a strange feeling inside your nervous system. It's a drug, and I only came to realize this when I was off of it and experienced the effects first hand. Very strange! It's nice to have made the transition from an "addicted smoker" to "one that smokes at parties, maybe once a year" smoker. I smoked a pack a day for over 40 years and had absolutely no trouble quitting. Some say it's a matter of willpower but in my case all it took was getting lung cancer and having the better part of my right lung removed. ;o) Haven't had a smoke in 4.5 years. . . and counting. Elrikk
