What is your GPL2 Dream?

Wish lists for a hypothetical GPL2

Dave Cook asked what readers would want in a GPL2 amid talk that Dave Kaemmer might be working on one privately. Suggestions included the 1980s turbo or ground-effect era, weather, minor repairs, better brake modelling and an open architecture for different car types, while Conga and ymenard dismissed the rumour since Kaemmer was only advising on NR2003. DoktorB pointed to a site with rare pre-release GPL screenshots.

If indeed DK is going to surprise us someday with a GPL2, what do you wish you could see in this title? - Dave

My dream is that people stop talking about what their GPL2 dream is. Some of these posts, these "what's the best... what is your..." just plain have me rolling on the floor. Is it just that the poster has nothing interesting to add or is it that the poster simply likes starting a thread that may have many followers? That big Parmalat Brabham thing, with tons of horesepower amongst others. Lighten up Alan. There was conversation this morning that Dave Kaemmer may be working behind the scenes on GPL2 on his own time. That's the first thing I've heard that sounded positive. FWIW Here's what I would like to see: * Weather - I remember seeing adjustable weather effects in the early GPL screenshots. * Downforce - Talk of 1972-73 winged cars would address this. * Better graphics - Increased poly count for cars and cockpit views. I'd like to see better than NR2002. * Improved Damage - Not just visual, but internal as well * Improved Sound - Dolby 5.1 Surround and a higher sampling rate (correct me if I'm wrong) would increase clarity * Integrated multiplayer with record keeping ala NR2002. * Mod'ability - our community has proven that it can step up to the plate and create some top notch add-ons. * Built in support for the GPL Shifter. * Improved collision detection. What else? - Dave

i'd just like to see the ability to make a pit stop for minor repairs in PRO mode... so a serious problem could not be fixed (shift-R) but a bent susp member could. or the ONnline prediction factor be more like OFFline, so taps wouldnt send a car into orbit... but i like the 67 cars. and improved damage graphics and tire modeling and brake wear and weather, would be fine without getting away from the original reason for GPL'67 that being the last year before they became airplanes~ bo On Fri, 04 Oct 2002 23:11:41 GMT, Goy Larsen <" nbso"@nic.br> wrote:

Franois, do you know where I can find those early GPL beta screenshots that showed adjustable weather effects? I think they were on a German site initially. That's nostalgia... - Dave

Obviously from a physics point of view the Turbo cars are interesting as they created significant challenges for drivers as they had to time the boost lag passing and going around the track. However this story of DK working on a sequel is bull. Dave is the genius behind the physics models, he would not start with a "year" like 1972. He builds the model then would go from there. Pointing to the fact that he had picked a year discredits the claim IMO.

had > picked a year discredits the claim IMO. > Not necessarily Conga. Because of the huge changes in F1 over the years, you can't just create a model and plug in the correct numbers. There were Turbos, non-turbos, ground effects, electronic suspensions... IF you are going to design a historic F1 sim, then right off you had better pick an era so you can limit your workload. Otherwise you'll be stuck coding High wings and low wings and no wings and flat bottoms and GE bottoms etc etc. Personally I've started pestering the F1 2002 modders for a High Winged Can Am mod...maybe somebody can send DK the Cutout poster of the Chapparal 2E... dave henrie

That's nostalgia... Wow good question. Those early screenshots, yeah they showed a different menu system (with an AI slider per example). I can't remember where to find them. They were at the old gp-legend.com website, but it went offline a long time ago. -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- http://ymenard.cjb.net/ -- This announcement is brought to you by the Shimago-Dominguez Corporation - helping America into the New World...

I think i posted this before, but... Technology wise, I'd like to see the upcoming N2003 model which apparently features debris and high frequency bump modelling. In addition, I'd want a better brake model (temperature/wear). Also, I'd want the option of DNQ's and the 107% rule. Time period wise, there are so many years I'd love. 1958, with the introduction of the rear engined Cooper. 1967 redone with more detail. 1968 with the primitive wing cars. 1988 with the great Senna/Prost battle and the last of the turbos plus a few normally aspirated cars. 1980ish (1979-1982) just so we'd have a game with Jacques Villeneuve in it, even if the turbo Ferrari had the worst lag of any F1 car. My favorite by far, however, is 1976. I think you meant Jacque's father, Gilles Villeneuve. I'd like to see it more open architecture, so that different car types can be added, sort of like plug-ins. If it was structured well, you could have a huge database of tracks (as GPL now has), and allocate each of them to a given years calendar, along with the car types appropriate to that year. We could then race pretty much whatever season we wanted, even 1967, but with better modelling in all aspects. Alternatively, we could race whatever cars we wanted on any choice of tracks, like an F2002 Ferrari at Bremgarten, etc. However, this may not be easy! Dreams, dreams, dreams, Andrew. Hey Jason, quick question. Wasn't Gunnar Nilsson a motorcycle hot shot (motocross) before turning to F1? It seems as though the old memory is up to its old tricks once again so I'm not too sure... -- See ya in the pits, Dean I have a terrible memory. In fact my memory's so bad I can't remember how long it's been since I've forgotten anything. GPL history can be found at http://doktorB.fateback.com There's the first known published screenshot from Sierra's Interact Magazine, and some rare screenshots of an pre-release version of GPL with different menus. There's also a special screenshot on the 2nd page which I'm surprised I've never seen mentioned before on RAS. "Graham Hill was the coolest driver. He won all the races and his hair never moved" !!!! Was some Papy employee drunk one night when they made that page- most of the sentences don't make sense, but when they do, they'll make you chuckle :o) doktorB
