F1 2002 framerate?

Improving F1 2002 frame rates on a GeForce4 MX

David Mocnay had poor F1 2002 frame rates on a GeForce4 MX440. Advice ranged from blaming the card to checking AMD/VIA chipset AGP drivers, disabling vsync and forcing anti-aliasing settings in the nVidia control panel. After installing the right drivers and settings he reached 40-70fps with everything maxed.

Hi Guys, I almost have F1 2002 set-up to the point where I'm pretty impressed with it (ie. it drives well); though I am having frame-rate problems. I am running it in 800x600x16bit with no anti-alliasing and the mirrors swathed OFF in order to achieve 35 - 50fps in a 'test-day' mode. I have most things set on 'high' except for the special-effects which are set on 'low'. Moment I switch the mirrors ON, I loose good 10fps. Now if I to into a race with all 21 cars there then my framerate hovers around 27-28fps and that's just not satisfactory as if feels really 'choppy' ... the 35-50fps barely does it in the 'test-day'. So I figured that I need to have 40+ fps at all times to have fluid gameplay .... though, any tips on how I can achieve that? My system is Athlon 2000 Pro (ie. 1.7Gh) with 512Mb RAM and GeForce4 MX440 video card. ps. One more thing, can anyone point me to better sounds for F1 2002 ... in particular all the 'feedback' sounds like wheel-spin and sliding as they seem almost non-existent in the game and do detract from making this 'full' experience. -- Regards, David Mocnay
The first obvious thing I see is your video card, that MX card is a big bottleneck for the system you have. It's really not a "true" GeForce4. Even a GeForce3 Ti500 would probably perform better. To give you an example, I run the Athlon XP1600+ at 1.5ghz, and with my GeForce4 Ti4400 I get, with most everything set on high, around 80 fps in testing, and 50+ in a race. At the start of the race, in the lineup grid, I start around 43 fps. When it is cloudy and rainy, my fps drops to the low to mid 40's. Having said that, the only other things you could try is check your d3d settings for your drivers, make sure vsynch is off, choose best performance, make sure no anisitropic filtering or aa is on. But seriously, when you can put in a GeForce4 Ti card, even the 4200 is excellent and can overclock easily . You would see a big difference. Don Burnette David Mocnay wrote:

I'll add to the overwhelming evidence that it's your video card. ;0) I'm running an AMD 1600+ & GF3 Ti 500. Running 1280x1024x32bit with all graphics high I see 50+ fps warming up and 25+ at start of the race then 30-45 during the race. -- Joe M. My friend has a MX 440 and it is just as fast in 800x600 as my Ti4600 is in 1024x768. I honestly don't know what's wrong with David's system. I'm guessing it might be a lack of proper VIA 4-in-1 drivers or some FF problems with his wheel.

The tyres on F1 cars don't really squeal under wheel-spin. They make more of a 'scrubbing' sound and I think F1 2002 has captured it perfectly. You should be able to hear when the wheels are about to lose traction. If not, you might need some better speakers or maybe try using headphones.

An MX440 at 800x600 easily outperforms a Ti500 at 1280x1024 (especially in 16-bit) As a guide, you should keep lowering the resolution/colour depth until you get a score of over 40Million Tri/sec in 3DConfig. That way, you can be sure that your video card isn't bogging things down.
Thanks guys, you are being very helpfull. I can see that most of you have no problems achieving ~50fps even in the race and my PC should be quick enough to do the same. I'd rather not buy a new video card as I just bought the system and it seems to run flawlesly with my other software (mayinly GPL with all the hi-res, hi-detail cars and tracks). I will buy the video-card if it is really the problem, but from the sound of it there are people with the same card achieving high framerates like you guys. ------------------------------------------------- My friend has a MX 440 and it is just as fast in 800x600 as my Ti4600 is in 1024x768. ... I'm guessing it might be a lack of proper VIA 4-in-1 drivers or some FF problems with his wheel. ------------------------------------------------- I forgot to state this earlier, but I do not have FF wheel and it is set to OFF in the controller-options. What are "VIA 4-in-1 drivers". Maybe I can look into that (if I knew what that is). Also, what spec system does your friend (withthe same card) run in order to achieve thos ehigh framerates? ------------------------------------------------- As a guide, you should keep lowering the resolution/colour depth until you get a score of over 40Million Tri/sec in 3DConfig. That way, you can be sure that your video card isn't bogging things down. ------------------------------------------------- OK, I will try that when I get home and see what 'score' I'm getting. ------------------------------------------------- The tyres on F1 cars don't really squeal under wheel-spin. They make more of a 'scrubbing' sound and I think F1 2002 has captured it perfectly. ------------------------------------------------- I am not really fussed as to what the 'real' F1 car makes as long as I can hear some feedback. My problem is that I don't seem to be getting any feedback (but visual) that my tyres are loosing grip. In a 'real' car you have a lot more feedback at your disposal so even if you can't hear the tyres you knon that the tyres are sliding/slipping. In a sim we only have the visual and aural feedback. I don't get enough aural feedback so I feel like I'm too late with my controller-inputs as I am only reacting to the visual clues. GPL helps a long way with this via the audio-feedback. So my concern is not to what the sound is as long as there is some ... whether it be 'scrubbing' or somehting else. Are there more pronounces sounds around? If so can anyone point me to them? If there are not any around then is there a way to rurn up the volume of the existing 'scrubbing' sound as it is way too quiete for me. Thanks again for all your help. -- Regards, David Mocnay

:) my f1 2k1 score(can't remember what 2k2 was) was topping out around 24million. I guess I have ALOT of turning down to do. dave henrie
-------------------------------------------------------- As a guide, you should keep lowering the resolution/colour depth > > until you get a score of over 40Million Tri/sec in 3DConfig.-------------------------------------------------------- OK, I have also updated my video drivers (to make sure that they are the latest) and I am getting 18.2Mil in the 3d-config. Far from 40 :-( Even if I turn down the resolution to 640x480, I get only just over 20Mil. Odd thing is that now that I have the RH 2002 car-set installed, it uses it's own config file and it seems that I have to change things there manually. Looks like I have now 2x anti-alliasing switched on (and video-more 3 ... whatever that is)and my framerate is 35 - 50fps in test-mode (still with mirrors OFF). Cold you possibly find out what 'score' does your friend with the same card get in 3d-config and what settings is he running? I would love to NOT to have to get a new video-card if I don't have to. -- Regards, David Mocnay "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:D37o9.70416$[email hidden]... > > "Damien Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:anqpge$gel9n$[email hidden]... > > > I'll add to the overwhelming evidence that it's your video card. ;0) > I'm > > > running an AMD 1600+ & GF3 Ti 500. OK, I did find a 'sound patch' which makes the cars and ripple-sptrips sound great. Also I found a skidding sound based on GP2 which seems to suit me better ... now all I need is track-updates and better framerate :-) -- Regards, David Mocnay "Damien Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:anqp5k$gguq1$[email hidden]... > > ps. Higher resolutions and colour depths. That's it. F1 2002 doesn't use pixel or vertex shaders so there's virtually no advantage other than raw fill rate. The MX 440 is no slug when it comes to fill rate. It rivals a GF3.
--------------------------------------- Turn off AA and make sure that you've got the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers... --------------------------------------- OK, I will switch the anti-alliasing OFF ... I didn't think the 2x anti- alliasing was making much difference to the frame-rate as I was running it without it originally. Though, what are the "VIA 4-in-1" drivers? If someone couud point me to these then I'll donload them and insteall them as well. -- Regards, David Mocnay

For an Athlon, it is likely that it is Via, but it could also be SIS, NVidia or AMD/Via. The manual that came with your motherboard should tell you this information. Your motherboard should also have come with a CD with (probably old) versions of the drivers you need on it. Something odd is happening ... it seems that I don't know how to switch OFF the anti-alliasing. The 3DConfig program is saying that it is OFF and I also made sure that FAA in the config.ini file is set to 0 (zero), but I still have AA enabled in game?! I trying changing it in the 3DConfig between 'disabled' and 2x and that makes no difference in game. I also tried changing it in the config.ini between 0 and 2 and that makes no difference as well. Has anyone else experienced this? Between this and the cars changing the 3D models with distance I am getting annoyed with the setting up of things as it seems to do what it wants anyway :-( -- Regards, David Mocnay "Dameon" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > On Mon, 7 Oct 2002 22:54:07 +1000, "David Mocnay" > <[email hidden]> wrote: > > >Looks like I have now 2x anti-alliasing switched on > > Turn AA off, it causes a big hit. That motherboard uses the AMD / Via chipset. The AMD Northbridge controls the AGP. You thus need to make sure you have the correct AGP driver installed. You can get the drivers from the Gigabyte page: http://tw.giga-byte.com/support/d_amd.htm#amd750_760 The "AMD 750 / 760 series chipset (North Bridge) driver" is the important one in this context. Note: if you have WinXP, the driver should already be installed by default and this thread has turned into a red herring....... Ian -- Ian Riches GPL Rank +1.76 Monsters of GPL +284.19

You need to check the anti-aliasing values in the control panel for your video card. I don't have an Nvidia card, so can't tell you the full details, but right click on your desktop, choose properties and start digging..... Ian -- Ian Riches GPL Rank +1.76 Monsters of GPL +284.19
Well, this is just a guess based on the file name, but it sounds like you have a Hybrid. Just like the excellent ABIT KG7, your board _appears_ to have the AMD 761 Northbridge and the VIA 686b South Bridge. I think :) This means you will need AGP Drivers from AMD's site, and South-Bridge (Inf, USB, etc...) drivers from VIA's site. I'd just use what Gigabyte tells you to use if you don't have a firm handle on this. -Larry "David Mocnay" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:OKCo9.48786$[email hidden]... > I have a Gigabyte GA-7DX motherboard ... it does mention something about > 761_VIA 66. Not exactly... AMD has released updated North-Bridge (AGP) drivers since XP was released... Not that they are mandatory, but the _are_ there. -Larry "Ian Riches" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Yes, if it's an nvidia card, the 'overall' control is in the advanced section of the Display Properties. It's part of the nvidia properties tab (advanced options). You can set a value, force them off, or allow each app to control the settings. If you really want AA gone, select always disable. -Larry "Ian Riches" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > On Wed, 9 Oct 2002 01:38:35 +1000, "David Mocnay" > <[email hidden]> wrote: > > >Something odd is happening ... it seems that I don't know how to switchOFF > >the anti-alliasing. aaaah, OK ... I see. I did not realise that this 'overrides the FAA, I just though that this is the 'default' and F1 2002 setting will take precedence. Is there a way I can set the FAA for each game as I do want the 2x FAA for GPL (where it looks great and still gives me full frame-rate) but I do not know any other way to set it for GPL. I'll try it and see what my framerate is without the 2x FAA set in the Windows display settings. -- Regards, David Mocnay "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:WEHo9.93546$[email hidden]... > Yes, if it's an nvidia card, the 'overall' control is in the advanced > section of the Display Properties. Yes. Set it to the setting that allows the games to choose. It will be obvious when you get to the FSAA option page in the driver. -Larry "David Mocnay" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:JLVo9.49496$[email hidden]... > aaaah, OK ... I see. Somethings seems wrong. My XP1600 with an GF2 GTS runs F12002 at always >35 with mirrors on, almost all eye candy on and at 1100 x 1000 (duno the exact figure ITM). Check your system and probably install some fresher drivers. Or is that GF4 MX really *that* bad? Have you disabled Vsync in your D3d properties? You'll need a hack like coolbits to activate that feature. dave henrie "JS" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Somethings seems wrong. > My XP1600 with an GF2 GTS runs F12002 at always >35 with mirrors on,almost all

Well, you guys are geniuses :-) Thanks a lot for all your help as now I am enjoying 40 - 70fps in 800x600x16bit with 2x FAA and everything maxed out (including mirrors). I get around 50-70fps when I'm on the track alone and 40-60fps in the race with all the 21 other cars. At the grid (in Canada) I still get 30+ fps as well as coming into my pits. Game looks and plays fantastic now so I can stop my system 'tweaking' and actually enjoy the game :-) What did the trick for me were the AGP bus drivers you pointed me to. I updated my VIA drivers (which did not seem to make a difference) as well as the AGP-bus drivers to which you pointed me to. Once I installed (or upgraded) these my frame-rate doubled and I was seeing 100fps with some things switched off. Oddly enough my 3dConfig score has not changed much - it's still telling me 18.2 in 800x600x16bit with 2x anti-alliasing (which does not seem to make a difference to the score). So thanks heaps yet again as you have managed to turn F1 2002 into something really special on my PC :-) -- Regards, David Mocnay In article <[email hidden]>, [email hidden] says... > On Wed, 9 Oct 2002 01:33:21 +1000, "David Mocnay" > <[email hidden]> wrote: > > >------------------------------------------------- > >> Firstly, make sure you are running a Via-based system.
