PS2 Racing Sims Versus PC

Do PS2 racing games compare with PC sims

Rick Sweeney asked whether PS2 racing titles compared with PC sims on his new HDTV. Most said none matched PC sims in depth, though Gran Turismo 3 and NFS Hot Pursuit 2 were praised as fun, and Steve Smith, author of GPL's Four Wheel Drift guide, rated GT3 highly for gameplay. A newcomer's insults drew rebukes, and side posts covered installing the SSM mod's Le Mans track in F1 2002.

I just purchased a PS2 and have it hooked up to a Sony 57 HDTV. I have been racing on the PC for years. Anyone have any comments on the PS2 Formula 2 and NASCAR racing sims? Do they compare at all to the PC sims? Also how is the racing wheel for the PS2? Would be a gas to run the PS2 sims on this TV, but Leary of the quality versus the PC sims. Simulation, Graphics, and then sound would be my priorities. Thank you Rick

Rick - My boys had to have a PS2 so I got em one. I also bought the Logitech Driving Force wheel since my frakenstien Momo won't work with TSW pedals on the PS2. I've tried most of the racing titles and I have to say, they don't touch the PC versions. Nascar Heat, WRC, GT3, and the new NFS:HP2 are all fun - but not like similar titles on the PC. The wheel is good, but force feedback is nowhere near GPL, NR2002 or even Rally Trophy for that matter. More like vibrations than force feedback. I am however, waiting anxiously for the new iteration of Tomb Raider. I played TR2 on my PC all the way through, but I think I'll dedicate this one to the PS2 just for simplicty. It's awful easy to grab the dual shock controller and fire up the console. I would give my left nut to have your 57" HDTV - well maybe not ;) - Dave

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit is getting rave reviews. It's in my top force of all-time. Other great games are Gran Turismo 3, Ferrari F355 Challenge. All three support force feedback with the Logitech wheel. F1 2002 is pretty good, but can't compare to the PC version. -- "Life is what you experience between racing games" Galley

Rick, I just got through writing a story for Motor Trend (Feb. issue) on console racing games. The Xbox's biggest advantage: 720p and 1020i HDTV support (not to mention Dolby 5.1). The PS2 trumps with Gran Turismo 3, a fabulous game...and it supports both a wide variety of FF wheels (incl. PC wheels from Logi & TM) *and* 720p. Unfortunately, you need to have the hard-to-find "component" TV connector cable (5-wire: 3 vid, 2 aud). It's actually easier to find the $60 Monster Cable version than Sony's own $30 cable. As to the s/w, I liked EA's NASCAR Thunder, but if you're into realism, World of Outlaws: Sprint Cars' physics model is a *lot* closer to the real thing. I didn't know Sony made HDTV sets as early as 57. --Steve Smith "Rick Sweeney" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:gylq9.20188$[email hidden]... > I just purchased a PS2 and have it hooked up to a Sony 57 HDTV. Yea, I am using the Monstor Component cable. I had a harder time finding a component switch box, but finally found one. I have been playing Final Fantasy and it really looks good, as well as Maddon 2003. Is the PS2 running 1080i? I do not think the Sony supports 720p. I went back to the future to find the Sony 57. Well if you bought a PS2 for such priorities, then they are all mixed up. There's no console racing game that even approach the level of complexity and options (including often multiplayer services with 30+ drivers) of the half-dozen most complex PC racing simulations. It's my understanding (Sony p.r. seemed *really* vague abt. this) that the PS2 supports 720p but not "true" HDTV, i.e., 1020i. >"Steve Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote > GT3 also has something no Papy game has ever had: gameplay. Fair point Steve. It could be debated as a deliberate choice depending on the type of motorsport. I'll say compared to your typical racing game, Papyrus has incredible customisation (which always equals to gameplay). You can set yourself a race at any track of the WC, at any length, with AI of various style, with dozens of options with two sets of physics and you can even race online with even more gameplay types. Of course you all know that ;) I'll say it's just, hmm "different gameplay". Of course, that gameplay of GT3 is immensely larger but it's still not much. I've always felt that console racing titles aren't a snip of their PC counterparts. They're always had a more 'arcade' feel. The most realistic PS2 sim I've played is F1 2002 an while it can certainly hold it's own, it suffers from canned spins, terrible AI and the feeling that it's perfectly fine to throw your car across the gravel trap and out the other side if it will get you a couple of extra positions. > Thank you Your welcome!
The PS2 supports 720p since it can give VGA out. But if the games does it.. hm.. not sure.. im pretty sure Tekken4 does it anyway. But a question, what does it do if your TV supports it, when many PS2 games outputs 640*228 resolution, or 640*480? It cant give 1020 resolution out in any game that ive seen. You dont get it to output to VGA if the game doesnt support it. I only know that Tekken4 supports VGA out, but the VGA monitor must support the refreshrate. The VGA adapter comes with Sonys Linuxkit for PS2, which costs $199 for a hdd, ethernet, keyboard, mouse and vga-adapter. Yes, as a devout player (well past) of PC sims and now GT3, I'll go with the "different". Not clearly better. GT3 is a blast. But I do get tired of endlessely racing the monotonous Test Circuit. And the knock-em sock-em AI that adjusts to your speed. And actually, I do like racing the slow cars. After a while, it is too easy to win with over-powered fast cars. I find it fun to race against very closely matched vehicles where one mistake may cost you all your energy. Again, too bad about the slow-down/catchup AI. But give me more real tracks, more cars on track, half-decent AI. Oh, and a dash view wouldn't hurt. Playability is more than just repeating a circuit in search of the magical 100% score. OTOH, it does have: Great cars (too bad not as many as GT2!) Very good sound. Pretty imaginative courses . Ditto the GT2 comment, and add some shorter ones like Autumn/Mini! And once in a while, a real gripping race. Try a 78 lapper where you win by less than a second. The PC needs a game/sim like this, but with the above enhancements.
Thanks Guys for all the feedback on this. I think I will pass on the racing sims for PS2. Maybe PS3? By the way, who is this dameon Terd? To many Dameon's is the reason I no longer race online. From what I think was your original post, it wasn't clear if you have GT3. While I might have focused on the negatives, I suggest that you run, not walk to the store and pick it up. It is almost reason enough to buy a PS2 alone. If you already have a PS2, and are enough of a sim fan to post here, you want this game. And at $19.95 it is the bargain of the year. Yes, it is far from the last word in *racing* realism. But the graphics, sound, and *driving* realism are top notch (well, almost on the last). If only there was a PC equivalent... I need to correct some stuff wrote here. First and foremost... there is not a single game that has ever come out on the PS2 to date that supports 720p HDTV (and yes, 720p is literally HDTV by it's own definitions). In fact, there are only two games that I know of on the PS2 that even support simple 480p (which btw is not HDTV). Gran Turismo 3 certainly does not support 480p. As far as the "gameplay" being better in GT3 over a Papy game. Since when has "gameplay" suddenly become having tons of cars and upgrade options? The cars in GT3 do not handle very realistic, they incur no damage and you can only ever race 6 other cars. You can win most track by just slamming into walls at top speed and go your way. Not to mention unrealistic understeer. If you think the gameplay in GT3 is better than GPL, seriously, stop coming to a sim forum right now and go into the mundane world of casual gamers that have grew up on a PlayStation and somehow think their "hardcore". To the poster, please tell me you didn't spew this misinformation in Motor Trend? Did you even research anything? Did you try anything for yourself? Where did you come up with this idiotic idea that GT3 can do 720p? Sheesh man.

I installed the SSM Mod too and I used the combined carset and the default install with the LeMans converter. I have a Lemans track in F1 2001 but how (or where) do I get one for F1 2002 ? I also have the prototypes installed in 2001 along with the ALMS and FIA V3. Will these (or somwthing similar) become available for 2002 ? ie. Will it be possible to get the usual Porsche's and Prototypes racing in 2002 along with the fab cars that came with the Mod itself. ? Thanks in advance to all who care to reply. Elrikk

The ALMS guys are also working on this, they have screen shots of the LMP prototypes plus the new GT cars. It should be a wonderful Christmas season. The plan is for the LMP cars to be added next then the GT(Porche 993's) cars by the end of the year. They have tested 60 cars on the LeMans track but that won't be available for awhile. They claim to have the pit order problems worked out and PLAN on make 50 pit stalls available and working. > ie. I *may* be mistaken, but I believe the poster who wrote the Motor Trend bit, Steve Smith, is the same person who wrote the "Four Wheel Drift" book that came with original copies of GPL. I have no idea if it was included in subsequent (budget) releases, but it was a good read. If I turn out not to be mistaken, I reckon you could cut him some slack... Mark Reading, UK

Thanks again, seems to work fine. Now I can free up some disk space by uninstalling F1 2001 and its mods. ( to make room for the comming mods for F1 2002 ) Will it never end ? ;o) Elrikk

Similarly, with NFS HP2 the PC version is the watered-down, untuned game that Black Box handed off to another developer several months ago. I will state this again. "GAMEPLAY" is not about graphics, cars, tracks, upgrades, sound blah blah blah. Are you guys kidding me here? No serious... am I being played on? Do I really ned to explain what "gameplay" is or like I suspect, your having fun at my expense? Hint... gameplay's biggest part has to do with "control".

Seems many console games approach "gameplay" as repetition of pretty much the same thing in search of unlocking something that PC games make available from the start. All in the drive for a 100% "score".

The first PC gamer I came across who was a fan of Gran Turismo (before GT2 or GT3) was Alison Hine, who was also a GPL beta tester, and as much a worshipper of accurate physics as I am. She seriously got me to consider a PS2 just to play it. And now I have. It's no GPL, but it's the best thing I've found for consoles...and makes me wish Papy would do a console game (Can-Am, say, or Baja 1000) for the PS2.
