Choosing a PS2 racing game

Ruud van Gaal asked which PS2 racing game to buy among Crashed, Burnout 2 and Ferrari F355 Challenge. Suggestions included F355 for realism, Burnout 2 for graphics, WRC, NFS Hot Pursuit 2 and World of Outlaws; V-Rally 3 developer Sebastien Tixier discussed a European wheel bug, and Dave Pollatsek plugged his upcoming NASCAR Dirt to Daytona. Ruud bought Burnout 2 and enjoyed its crash mode.

Hi all, I'm thinking of picking up a new racing game for my PS2 (so not really sim-oriented). I've seen 3 titles: - Crashed - Burnout 2 - Ferrari 355 Challenge Which one of those would be nicest? BTW I already have GT3, GTA3 and Stuntman. The latter is a bit too darn repetive and has such long (and unnecessary) loading times that it's just not fun anymore. Thanks, Ruud van Gaal Free car sim: http://www.racer.nl/ Pencil art : http://www.marketgraph.nl/gallery/
Haven't tried any, but I did have F355 Challenge on the DC. It is supposed to be a pretty direct port. If you want the most sim-like of all console racing titles, this is the one to get. But, it's one car only, against IIRC, 7 other like cars. Only about 6-10 tracks (real). Supposedly, the graphics in the PS2 version are no better than the DC's, which were very good for that time and console, but aren't SOTA now.
Burnout 2 has the best gfx: 720p (near HDTV) output. I didn't like 355 or Sega GT (but read reviews like those on Digital Sportspage (digitalsports.com). World of Outlaws has the best physics, but I liked Need for Speed 'cuz I drive console games to relax, not get serious. "Ruud van Gaal" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Hi Ruud! Now that's a tough one! I'm mostly relplying to remind you Colin McRae 3.0 will be out on 25th, but I may comment on the F355 as well as I got it myself recently (can't resist a Ferrari staring at you and not buying it!). The physics seems rather good in F355, in fact it's probably one of the finest as seen on the PS2. The graphics are so-so; quite dated, but they get the job done and are smooth. The sound is also less impressive than one would expect from a Ferrari licencsed game, but the tyre squeal is one of the finest I've heard in terms of letting you know the fine ballance between when you're drifting and when you're overcooking it. The AI is trying to give you a realy rough time, though often they just catch up on you and then not overtake. Overall they give you much more of a race than in GT3, though (and no, those guys do NOT track on predestined trajectories, as some believe; I know you don't, Ruud ;) ). Track selection is also very nice, from Suzuka (long and short), Monza (old first chicane), Long Beach, Laguna Seca etc. and they seem quite accurate (certainly better than in one recent F1 sim series). The worst part is the control scheme, there is a deadzone in my LWFFGP wheel that one just can't get rid of, though with a good calibration and making the steering response more nonlinear the thing is not as intrusive anymore. It seems optimized for a gamepad, in which case probably the controls are quite nice; not that I ever tried :D. BTW, did you consider NFS:HP2? I tried the demo on a PS2 demo disc, and that one was rather fun, not to mention the physics seem more than decent as well (much nicer than in the Race Driver demo that was on the same disc, for example), if a 'tad' on the high grip side. Burnout have AWESOME graphics!. It looks OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG-TERRIFIC!. I kid you not!. Too bad the physics is ala Ridge Racer, but its fun. Spectacular crashes too!. But get Burnout 2, just for the graphics show :D its got awesome draw-distance and detail. "Ruud van Gaal" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Hey Sebastien, tell me, is there really no workaround for the LWFFGP wheel (the red one) to work normally with your sim? Hehe, got yours actually, but I'm not really a rally-driver. Must get into it I guess. :) I don't have a wheel for the PS2 though. Hm, I do have an USB Modena for a Mac, which might fit. Or the ActLabs ForceRS USB, but that isn't even recognized on the Mac. :( Thanks for the tips everyone. DTM Race Driver seems indeed a little too 'velocity of vehicle = direction of joystick' whereas on that very same CD as Gregor had (nice to see you back online!) I did indeed try NFS but failed to get rid of those cops. ;-) I may try Burnout2, although the demo I had of Burnout 1 seemed to keep giving these damn deadlines that you had to meet, instead of having the opportunity to kick some vehicles out of the way for fun. :) (just like Stuntman keeps kicking you out of some cool jumping with these quick timeouts; a 'cruise around' mode would have been nice). Best sim out there that features the CART-layout of Long Beach too, at least that I'm aware of. World of Outlaws is also fantastic. You can't lose with a Ratbag game. Jason

Okay, if we're allowed to plug our own games then, well then buy a copy of NASCAR Dirt to Daytona(R) for PS2/GC in November.... ;) Actually, I'm not sure if they're going to sell it in Europe (what you guys don't like oval tracks and dirt racing?)--I converted it to PAL, already, though. Cool, but eh Nascar? ;-) Driving around in circles can be reasonably fun, although you do need a wheel to get good at it I think. The little mushroom PS2 controller doesn't really give you a whole lot of sensitivity (imagine using that to steer your real car). >Actually, I'm not sure if they're going to sell it in Europe (what you guys >don't like oval tracks and dirt racing?)--I converted it to PAL, already, >though. How the hell do you guys over there stand those 50 Hz TVs? Mine is 100Hz actually. :) Just double the rate. But you get used to the frequency, really (I do lots of gameshows here and have my SGI's set to 50Hz for that). On the other hand, 60Hz isn't that great either. And besides, don't just about all TV's nowadays do NTSC as well as PAL? > The >flickering drove me nuts when I was doing the conversion... okay you get a >few extra lines of resolution, but what a cost.... Hehe. We're hardened programmers here. I believe the bandwidth of D1 video is exactly the same for NTSC as it is for PAL btw. So the same amount of pixels (D1=720x576 PAL @50Hz, 720x486 NTSC @60Hz). Hm, might be something to check out, since I'm doing a gameshow for the US currently (Lingo on GameShow Network something), which is in NTSC. It seemed overly responsive here, a bit too linear (the car just magic-carpeted over the track). Never mind the resolution, with PAL we get the same colour every time we watch a film ;) Seriously though, there is virtually no flickering watching a PAL source on a PAL TV, maybe you were watching it on a 60hz NTSC TV ? Actually, the PS2 "mushroom" isn't so bad once you get used to moving your fingers in one-micron increments, and the latency is better than many USB wheels. (It also has a smoother on-center feel than some of the "other" gamepads) I was just driving around one of our road courses with an extremely greasy setup--countersteering and throttle modulation (with the right stick as gas/brake) isn't so bad, but I miss being able to occasionally right-foot brake when trying to slow down when the car is resisting pointing down the track... One setup that I find works okay for more two-foot braking is throttle on right stick up, brake on R1 (pressure). I could imagine doing other tricks like making the pressure readout of the downshift button act as an extra throttle for synched downshifting without an auto throttle blipper. Here's another - not sure if it was previously mentioned but I rented "World of Outlaws Sprint Cars 2002" for the PS2 today and it is excellent. The graphics are even better than DTR2 on the PC IMHO. - Dave Cook

I'm looking forward to that one. The PSX version of V-Rally 2 was great! -- "Life is what you experience between racing games" Galley

I've never seen that version I think (I'm in Europe). I got Burnout 2 a couple of days ago, and it's quite fun. Have just about only been playing 'Crash' though. ;-) Quite a nice 'just go out and burn some fuel' type of game. :) Ruud van Gaal Free car sim: http://www.racer.nl/ Pencil art : http://www.marketgraph.nl/gallery/

For a golden medal in a desert crash, it does take a bit of development time impact. ;-) Actually, I reverted back to GTA3 again. Need to finish that before Vice City comes out. :) Ruud van Gaal Free car sim: http://www.racer.nl/ Pencil art : http://www.marketgraph.nl/gallery/
