I have run some F1 2k2 mods, and some DTM Heat online recently, and each
night I've been disconnected at least once per evening. I'm running AT&T
cable thru a Lynksis router. Even with good pings. I suddenly just loose
the connection, it's happened while racing and while chatting.
Ever since @home went broke, the At&t broadband replacement got rid of
static IP#s. Now if I leave my system idle for a certain period, I have to
re-aquire a new IP#. The trouble is, it seems to do this even when my
internet connection is active. Is there a way to limit that nasty behavior?

Could DHCP lease changes cause online disconnects
Dave Henrie asked whether DHCP address changes on his cable connection were causing disconnects during online F1 2002 and NASCAR Heat races. Replies explained lease timing and that his router, not the PC, held the ISP lease, and suggested checking the router's lease, using fixed local IPs or updating Linksys firmware. Most thought the problem lay on the WAN side.

Mmmm...
This is weird Dave, DHCP should not be doing this while the connection is
active (As far as I know)... How is tech suport with your ISP? You should
try & get help from them.
To me this sounds more like an hardware problem you're having, my IP changes
but only on re-booting and even then, will stay the same between re-boots
during the same day ususally. For it to change, the IP has to be allocated
to someone else by the server.
Are you sure that your NIC is properly configured? You're in Win98 right? It
may very well be that the you're not running on the right driver, if so the
Interface Card could be working intermitantly.
Try borrowing a NIC from a friend and re-install it in another PCI slot
(This could create IRQ conflicts with your soundcard that you will have to
resolve but it is a necessary exercise). Try installing your NIC in another
slot if you're positive you have the right drivers.

Hi Dave,
It's a fact that IP address's are in short supply, some ISP's (mine
included) have stated taking the IP address back if you're not using it and
allocating you a new one when needed.
I also know of one ISP that will take it back whether you're using it or not
if they need to give a connection to someone else .

so, in essence, they are charging you for a service that doesn't work, then?

Gunnar,
If they're taking it back when you're using it then that maybe be the case,
but if they take it when you're not, as long as they can give you one back
when it's needed that's ok isn't it?
After all if you want a static IP address you can pay extra for it.

If this is truly your problems cause.
Next time you boot up your PC (not sure what OS your running), verify the
lease time on the IP.
If 95/98/ME run the WINIPCFG.EXE utility. For NT/2000/XP go into a command
prompt (start/run/cmd(enter)) and type
ipconfig /all
What you're looking for is the lease time.
Here's the tail of my IPCONFIG /ALL output.
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Saturday, October 19, 2002 9:21:15 AM
Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Sunday, October 20, 2002 6:41:15 PM
In this lease, I've got 33 hours, 20 minutes or 2000 minutes in total for
the lease.
At 50% of the lease time (i.e. in 16 hours, 40 minutes or 1000 minutes) my
PC will try and renew the lease.
Normally you just get the same IP address back. However, if the DHCP
server on the ISPs end decides to "dish out" a new IP to my PC when I try
and renew, I WILL loose session on ANY game I'm running. Some ISPs are
resorting to this to break the P2P server thing.
This "may" be what you've experienced. I've seen lease time as low as 30
minutes (15 minutes).

depends on what "not using it" means, I guess. ssh connections, for
instance, have a tendency to stay idle for a long time, even when
they are connected. they would of course get disconnected on an
address-change, and I'm pretty sure many OSes would get pretty
confused as well.
and besides, there is no point to doing it.

Here's the lease info from winipcfg:
Lease Obtained 10 18 02 6:51:41 PM
Lease Expires 10 19 02 6:51:41
I had rebooted just before joining the first of two races last night(7pm
local pacific Daylight time.) So I supposedly had a fresh lease. The
disco came at about an hour and 10 minutes into the fresh lease.
The change of ip# is usually most prevealent while reading a big slew of
newsgroup posts. I'll go back to double check any new emails and the will
already have lost the connection to the server. I just have to re-click the
'send & receive' button a 2nd time and it will start back up. I guess I'm
gonna have to try and remember to release and renew my ip# before every
round of the DTM races...but that still leaves me high and dry for next
month's Bullrun 1000 which should run about 3 hours.

maybe. the lease can be maintained across system reboots. W2K does
this by default I think.

It will keep IP tracking info in the registry, however that OS will verify
that no one is using the IP beforehand.
Another option is to watch what the PCs doing at boot up with another PC.
I.e. Sniff the traffic and watch the bootup packets, also trace the time the
game disconnect happens.
Ethereal is a freeware sniffer if you guys are interested in this kinda
thing.

I'm leaning towards some other issue causing your problems.
DHCP, in your case, appears to be giving you what looks like a 12 hour or 24
hour lease (you omitted AM/PM on the expiry). Regardless, you shouldn't be
getting a new IP in an hour.
Disconnects can happen for other reasons.
You may need to trace what's going on at the time of the disconnect.
Could you describe your OS and connection type further (do you have a
firewall)?

Regardless, his PC will react EXACTLY the same as if he got an IP from his
ISP.
That is, lease recheck at 50% of the expiry.
Now, what would be interesting is to see what IP lease time his LinkSys is
getting.
It may well be getting a new one within an hours.
In which case it's NAT/Route/Firewall tables would resync, including
dropping session for any NATed PCs.

Well, if the problem is the router serving DHCP to the PC, he can fix
that part of it by giving his PC a fixed IP address within the range
allowed by the router. Dave, does your PC's IP address change, or does
your router's IP address change?

Heck I don't know...I took the router out of the box, I plugged it
in...hooked up thecables and all three computers hooked up with the net.
I'll dig out the manual and see what settings are available to change.
And sorry about the typo it was a 24 hour lease, PM to PM.(or twelve
hours before it checks in) But my problem happened in roughly an hour.
No warping, no indication of lag, I've seen that plenty with other times
when the wife was dloading mp3's. (and I made sure both of the other
systems were NOT online at racetime)

reading the help file said to disable dhcp on the router if you already have
dhcp enabled on the net. Now I don't know if this means my local 3 system
lan or the bigger attbi net. (if so, I'm gonna try disabling it and see
what happens)

That's only if you have another DHCP server on the local LAN. You
could, for diagnostic purposes, disable DHCP and just manually enter
the appropriate IP addresses, gateway, DNS servers in your PCs on the
LAN. It sounds more like your problem's on the WAN side.
HTH,
Kendt
I agree, you may want to upgrade the firmware on your Linksys.
