And I do mean rumor, as in I just made this up and there is no basis in
fact, but anyway....
If Papy is going to abandon NASCAR, where do they go next?
They want to do multi-platform games - what is the most popular console
racer? GT3, a sports car racing title.
And what is one of the most hoped for PC racing titles? SCGT 2, a
sports car game that people were petitioning for last year but that will
probably never get made.
Does anyone here think Sierra is not aware of how much money the
publishers of GT3 are raking in?
Have you noticed how many other games are trying to cash in on GT3's
popularity? Sega GT 2002, Pro Race Driver, Project Gotham Racing and
its sequel, etc.
Really Sierra/Papyrus couldn't do much better than to make the
definitive multi-platform sports car racing game. Frankly all the other
efforts in this field are somewhat less than a full sim, so there is a
hole in the market, an angle they could take that would separate their
product from the rest of the field. Well maybe I am full of BS too, but
we can always hope, can't we?
While we are dreaming, Sports Car Legends anyone?
;o)
Speculation on Papyrus's next project and consoles
Haqsau speculated, without any evidence, that Papyrus might turn from NASCAR to a multi-platform sports car title. The thread became a debate on whether PC gaming was declining relative to consoles, Gran Turismo's sales, and whether Xbox was failing against PS2. Damien Smith and Nick traded accusations of lying and fanboyism.
rumour/speculationindustry/business
Automated summary.
Papyrus like every other game developer is realigning their efforts towards
consoles. Where poor games fare better and their intellectual property is
better protected. Do we really need a Nascar game every year? Look at GPL,
four years and counting. The PC Gaming Golden age is over :(

I was actually thinking GTA3, which AFAIK has outsold GT3 by a huge
margin.

I'd be into that as long as ISI just made the engine and let someone
with a clue handle the physics, tracks, and graphics. It would rule
if the fps-dependant physics were chucked out the window, too.

How much are they raking in? Isn't it ridiculously expensive to get
the licensing rights to release a game for any of the current
consoles?

I dunno. Every console that's been released since the Atari 2600 has
had a ton of arcade racing games.
Didn't Sega GT debut in the arcades before the original Gran Turismo
came out?

Indycar Racing 3!

Someone should make a Software Development Legends. Dave Kaemmer, the
West Brothers, Sid Meier, Peter Molyneux, Yu Suzuki, etc. duking it
out in arenas modeled by ISI (and therefore nothing like the arenas
they'd be modeled after). The secret combos would be great, Kaemmer's
defensive move could be the Papy Push, the Westies could have a
dual-rushing attack called the PR Fiasco, etc.

I've been feeling the same way lately. For the first time I am seeing
console only games that I want! Plus, what's the deal with Microsoft
releasing X-Box only games, I feel jilted.
Sony has raked in abt. $750 million (retail) for the Gran Turismo
series...or more than any single movie ever ( e.g., Spiderman, Titanic,
Wind, etc.), and more than any movie+sequels except Star Wars and Raiders et
seq. Okay, maybe Batman. But HUUUUUUUUUUUGE doesn't begin to cover it. I
think Papy could do a credible job with a console "sim." They already have
the physics, they've mastered "driver aids," now all they need is that
elusive quality known as "gameplay." My suggestion: the early years of the
Can-Am, when strategic choices were wide open: wings, auto trans., tiny
rubber, giant motors, oddball chassis, Big & Dirty (e.g., the Honker) or
Small & Tidy (Tony Dean's 908). Likewise, the Can-Am franchise itself is
wide-freakin-open.
OTOH, looking around at the demise of Microprose, et alia, if Papy doesn't
come up with a raison d'etre pronto, profit-starved Vivendi won't waste a
second shuttering the place. Boom.

Your figures for movies are way off. Titanic made over $1.8 billion
dollars world-wide. Harry Potter, Phantom Menace and Jurassic Park
all over $900M dollars. Above $750M are also LOTR:FOTR, ID4,
Spider-Man, Star Wars, ET, Lion King.
If you combine movie+sequels, the count goes even higher. Even
Mummy and The Mummy Returns together have a combined gross of
over $800M. There are too many movies+sequels that have gross
higher than $750M to list here, but you can look them up if
you are interested. And these numbers don't even include home video
revenues :-0.

If I had a nickel every time I've heard that in the last 20 years, I'd be
ric.....well, I'd have about $20 now!
Console gaming has it's peaks and valleys and pc gaming is the constant. If
history repeats, consol gaming has once again oversaturated the market and
is headed for a decline. MS's Xbox has been a big failure and will likely
be abandoned next year unless they do surprisingly well this holiday season.

We will probably never agree on those points. At the risk of repeating
myself, the physics are fine, it's modern F1 that feels bad. And the
fps dependent physics is malarkey, IMO. It is just a question of frame
rate induced latency reducing the accuracy of your concept of where the
vehicle is and adding to your total reaction time. You can demonstrate
than in almost any game.
Possibly, but Sega GT 2002 took a more serious turn than the previous
version, with more vehicles in total, more niche vehicles that only a
hard-core car nut would be interested in, and a better physics model.
My opinion is that they changed the concept to try and go after the GT3
market.

LOL! Don't forget John Carmack, who would bludgeon people with his

and then crush them with stacks of unsold copies of Daikatana.

I think you're thinking of Super GT, also known as Scud Race, that
Sega released a number of years ago in the arcades, one of the first
Model 3 based titles (along with Virtua Fighter 3). It only had four
drivable cars (Porsche 911 GT2 (or was it GT3?), Ferrari F40, Dodge
Viper GTS-R, and McLaren F1), 4 tracks, and you raced in a field with
the other three cars and then a whole multitude of little clone
anonymous cars. It was a really fun game, but not even close to a
sim, and not related to Sega GT.

I don't think history is a fair guide in this case.
Yes the XBox, and even the Gamecube, might be toast.
Sony's PS2, on the other hand, is selling about three million units
per *month*. This is a VCR-like growth curve. It's not on a "sales
spike" - it's becoming a home appliance.

And the easy fact of the inflation on either PC games or movie tickets
(anybody should check out the adjusted gross of movies to see that most of
the stuff released today really doesn't get much audience)

Well, you may be onto something there. Gaming is too big on any platform
to just starve.

A thing people rarely notice about Microsoft is that they rarely, rarely
really give up. They are quite prepared to lose a battle but win the war
eventually. Windows and MSN are cases in point.
They *will not* just give up after a year. They might rebrand,
reshuffle, rethink, but like a plague, they will be back. Never
underestimate Microsoft in that way.

MSFT does not have any plans to abandon XBOX.
The XBOX is the one primary product MSFT will be pushing the american

A Car Wars/autoduel game! That would be nice indeed. You could enter your
car in different types of features (for ex, a $10 000 car feature, 10 laps
no holds barred (doesn't matter if you're the last one standing), the 18
wheeler/bus challenge, the sub-compact with only on type of weapon allowed,
etc).
Each event would be held at arenas (think of them as tracks) full of twists
and jumps. You start your "career" with a predetermined amount of money.
Build a basic car and then smash the opposition with rocket launcher,
flaming oil jets, etc). You could finally wreck legally all those boneheads
that used to wreck you on purpose in pick up races :)
Wouldn't it be fun... Goy Larsen's in the lead, drops some flaming oil and
explosive spikes (heheheh) on lap 3 and take half the field out... Ymenard,
who had the smart idea of buying auto-seal tires charges back and punts Goy
out of the way with his plow-bumper, just to be amazed by John Simmons'
amazing display of bravardo in using the "jump" short cut and winning the 10
laps feature at Hammer Downs.
All this in Papyrus-O-Vision (including smoke, fire effects (finally), dirt
and oil on the windshield :), incredible visual damage on the cars, etc).

I think you are right. IF the Xbox is a failure (and I'm not really
convinced of that yet) they will logically just push ahead their plans,
already rumored, to recast the Xbox as a set top digital entertainment
portal, with TiVo-like capabilities, etc. It may mutate a little in the
coming years, but it's not going to disappear.

Huh? It had GT3, GTA3, Tony Hawk (not that I like it, but some people
love it), SSX, ICO, and several other triple-A games. And an install
base of 10 million.
It may be true that MS has the patience to keep lose money for the
next 3 year, and try again in with the XBox 2 vs the PS3. If not, they
are history in the game console business.

A constant source of bankrupcy and
cheap acquisitions for developpers (Papyrus a perfect example). Anyway with
99% of the market, Microsoft has shifted its gaming focus from the PC to the
Xbox, how is anyone going to change that?
Xbox is growing nicely but MS wasn't losing $50.00 a pop every time it sold

Disregarding all the amazing games available on the PS2 when it hit 12
months, there is the fact that it sold massively more over the first
year of its life than the xbox, and is still outselling it today.
Also, Microsoft could fix Windows over and over until it was right,
but you can't fix problems in a sealed box, however big that box might
be. They can solve them with the xbox2, xbox3 and so on, but
unfortunately for them, Sony are one step ahead of them all the way.
The PS2 was a year old when the xbox appeared, yet is still mopping
the floor with it. Next time around, Sony will make another leap
forward with their product and its massive fanbase, while Microsoft
will still be working on xbox v1.1.
As far as that goes, as near as I can tell there is no real software on
the Xbox itself, other than a couple hundred K kernel in the system ROM.
Everything else is included on the DVD that the game comes on, all the
way down to device drivers. So the Xbox system software is not static,
it can continue to evolve, and each new game is delivered with the
drivers and libraries that it needs and that it is guaranteed to work
with (assuming they did their testing properly).

I think love em or hate em Microsoft is the biggest success in corporate
history. Such a success that the government will disregard a supreme court
juge's decision and use very ginger remedy in dealing with Microsoft. A real
American treasure.
I don't play console games, I much prefer the PC, but my sons love their PS2
and there will be a cool xbox bundle under the tree for them this Xmas.

Of course it did. The PS1 had a monopoly. It was only natural that Joe
Average was going to rush out and get a PS2 - especially since Sony had hyped it
to be 10 times more powerful than the Dreamcast - effectively killing Sega.
Never mind that instead of being 10 times more powerful, it turned out to be
more like 1.1 times more powerful. The ethics of Sony make Microsoft look like
angels.
Rubbish. I'm not aware of any developers complaining about the Xbox OS or
hardware. It's better than the PS2's in absolutely every department. There
haven't been any issues with the Xbox software. Stop spinning lies. The
biggest problem with the Xbox is the amount of dodgy PS2 games that have been
ported to it.

Ya sure that is going to happen. MS may have a lot of
money but they are in no position to make such moves. People like to focus
on MS and blame them for everything because they are a success. IMHO they
have done more than anyone to make the PC more mainstream. Sure the yare in
it to make as much $$$ as possible but isn't that the purpose of business.
I don't agree with everything they do but they certainly do some things to

roflmao! Don't you want Burnout, Metal Gear Solid 2, SSX Tricky, the
Colin McRae Series, Timesplitters 2, Silent Hill 2, ISS 2, MoH
Frontline, or any good games at all? All of those series began on Sony
machines and have been ported, and they are all pretty damn good. The
PS2 is lucky that we don't have ports of that dumbass Project Gotham
or Abe's Exodus.

Forgot to say, check this out:

Microsoft bought out RARE (developers of GoldenEye and Perfect Dark).
Sounds great, until you realise that all the guys who worked on
GoldenEye have moved on and have now just released Timesplitters 2 on
the PS2. Then a bunch of summer-placement undergraduates badly
converted that game to the xbox.

They could do it very easily. The power that company has right now and the

So you admit that you're happy to support inferior products simply because
they're popular? Sony adore people with that attitude. It means they can hype

>This would be a good start...but what I want is a game that simulates the
opening sequence in "Mad Max". (NOT Road Warrior!) The muscle car chase
idea would make a great game...you could even mix in a little RPG factor
with the other members of the MFP. Picture if you will:
RADIO: " This is Pursuit 1. We've got to stop these bikers before they reach
civilization! We are westbound on Anarchy road at mile 17. Who can
intercept?"
RADIO: "This is Goose. I'm four miles from your position heading east. Get
the Interceptor out here."
At which point, you head out from your position, using your map window to
get to a intercept point. Then, you chase down the badguys who use all sorts
of weapons, drop debris, etc. to knock out you & the other MFP's before you
can knock them out. All with realistic physics, etc. Make it a dynamic
campaign with the loss/addition of officers & gangs. Must repair vehicles
after missions if funds available, or motor fleet gets rag-tag. Upgrade
vehicles as your career advances. As MFP forces lose pursuits/officers,
bigger & tougher gangs move in. I could write about 20 specific missions off
the top of my head, but make it a dynamic world. Maintain law & order
through patrols, etc. And multiplayer would be awesome, but DON'T make it
online only. Then it's just quake on wheels.
Think I-76 meets Hot Pursuit.
I would buy it, anyways.

Never tried it. Microsoft have been buying the rights to games so they
can get them released on only one console, the xbox, as well as the PC
in some cases (for example: Halo, DOA3). Sony do the same (for
example: GT3, The Getaway). Nobody employed by SCEE/A/I complains
about Sony, and nobody employed by Microsoft complains either. Natch.
I don't support inferior products, it was just one feature of the PS2
which is better than the xbox - sales. There are more, like the
controller, the size, the lack of flickbook rendering which is in
every PC and xbox in the land (due to the way PC graphics cards work),
and more. As for the PS3 being another 'let down' like the PS2, I
would be glad, because in my opinion the PS2 has not been a let down
at all, in fact it is a fantastic gaming machine. If Sony replicate
that in the PS3, while adding 4 years of development, I will be
extremely happy. And they won't be getting any dollars from me, I want
my PAL PS3. And if all the independent developers gravitate towards
the PS3 in the same way as they have the PS2, I will be even more
happy.
When I said a few exceptions, I meant Halo and Rallisport Challenge,
which are the only xbox games I have enjoyed playing. When the PS2
reached a year old, I had a great deal more than 2 games which I
enjoyed playing, and some (for instance GT3) are so far ahead of the
two xbox games i mentioned in terms of sheer enjoyment and longevity
that the xbox pales in comparison to the year-old PS2. And I agree,
personal opinion.

Sorry. I didn't mean that you DID start spinning lies, I just meant
that I DIDN'T start, so therefore I can't stop. That's UK humour.
Sorry.
DOA3 uses the xbox's potential? Might as well throw it in the bin
now... I guess tit-physics are harder than I thought, even when they
are stored in the character animation. Need I mention that the DOA
series began on the PlayStation, until Microsoft bought out the series
because the xbox had no beat-em-ups, and Sony had Virtua Fighter 4 and
Tekken 4? The DOA dev team were happy to go, because VF and Tekken had
the Sony beat-em-up market, so they could get more sales on the xbox
as genre-leader. I don't really care about all three games, because I
am not a beat-em-up fan. Oh, and I suggest you write to the developers
of all the games I mentioned above, and tell them how much you hate
them diluting your gaming experience, not using the potential of the
xbox, and how they can all piss off back to Sony.

Hehe, good point. To be honest though, I like Project Gotham for split
screen multiplayer racing. Single player I got bored with rather
quickly, but it's great for mayhem at a party. What we like most (and
this seems to apply well to other console racing games) is to all pick
identical, low performance cars like the Mini Cooper and see who can
wring the most out of them. Sure, it's not serious racing, but it's
still a lot of fun.

Cool. BTW I damn near bought a PS2 when GT3 came out, but that was so
close to the Xbox introduction that I just had to wait and see. Not
sorry I waited, but OTOH I am glad you are happy with what you have. If
I had the bucks and the time I would probably have one of everything
anyway. ;o) Take care.
