Screw XP; 98 or ME?

Windows 98 or ME instead of XP for sims?

Steve Smith asked whether to choose 98 or ME after reports of XP problems. Most recommended 98SE over ME, though some found ME stable; others pushed Windows 2000 or defended XP, and the networking, system restore and Microsoft's end of support were debated. The thread drifted to Logitech wheel pot replacements.

After the troubles Alison Hine (and others) have had with XP installs, I'm not going to upgrade to Bill Gates' latest booty-booster after all. The only question left: 98 or ME?
Ditto that... I've been running 98SE for 2 years without a single complaint, and ALL my games/sims work on it! Even the older ones... 98, without a doubt! Never given me any trouble. R. Your loss IMHO, but I'm not going to argue with you :-) > The only question left: 98 or ME? Avoid ME if you can, some people are lucky enough to have a trouble free system with ME installed (Hi Achim), in which case it's a decent enough OS, most people with home built systems seems to have a fair bit of trouble though, so I'd recommend 98SE over ME Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ "A man is only as old as the woman he feels" --Groucho Marx--

Well I guess that explains why online gaming was better for me with ME over Win98. Learn something new everyday. And now that I have that over with I don't have to do jack the rest of the day. :) MadDAWG

I got very weird engine sound in GPL on my XP and SB Live 1024. And a nasty framrateissue on N2002. Also my MSFF have issues with XP with forced split axis which doesn't work very well with F1 2001. For all other games and applications i use XP though on my dual-boot system. -- Olav Malmin remove .spam when replying
Well I can't say much about the MSFF wheel. My Momo works great on XP. However everyone in this world would do themselves a big favor by dumping creative sound cards on gaming machines. That is doubly true if you are using a Geforce video card. MadDAWG
Olav Malmin wrote: > > ME works fine here, always have. And it's a homebuilt system aswell. Like Achim you ought to make your system available to MS engineers, they're dying to find out how you did that :-) Seriously though, small OEM builders like us stopped offering ME as an OS alternative a long time ago, too much hassle, we still offer W98SE, the support and warranty work was way out of proportion, especially since there was little or nothing wrong with the hardware in the first place If we built 5 identical systems I could almost guarantee you that at least one of them would have issues, yet if you installed a different OS, Win98/2000/XP/NT4/95 or whatever without changing a thing, the PC would be as reliable as the next PC and no matter what kind of "burn in" program or test program you'd run it would report back that the system was fine, go figure I'm not doubting that a lot of people run ME just fine, it's just that it's caused us a hell of a lot work in the past with PC's that are basically ok, except for the OS :-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ "A man is only as old as the woman he feels" --Groucho Marx--

"Its a crappy gna gna" So many pseudo experts in this newsgroup *YAWN* In answer to your question. I recommend that you use ME and then disable the system restore option under the system icon in your control panel, also you will get an updated plug and play database that works very well and a TCP/IP stack that performs much much better then 98. In GPL for instance on identical machines (three tested so far) GPL is 15 to 20% faster under 9X also if you use a Soundblaster live you won't get the pop up associated with 2K/XP, then there is the refresh rate issue....all in all as far as a gaming OS. ME with the system restore disabled is KING. Remember to enable DMA on your drives and set a static swap file. IMO ME is more stable than 98 (and probably 98se), and is more refined. But, many people had probs getting it to run well. OTOH, I've had it running in true excellency on a lot of different hardware, and using lots of different application or low level software, drivers etc. Mainly because of its flawless stability I'd personally chose ME over 98se, but I am reluctant to recommend it to you because it can obviously take some tweaking to get it run like it does for me, thinking of the fairly large amount of problems reported regarding ME by others. If you decide to get ME, ask me if you get probs. I've just re-tried my old SB Live 'cos I wanted the digital out, up 'til then I was using the on-board AC97 which was fine. The SB Live started cracckling again in TIR so I took it out. Put in a cheap Audigy and ... WOW this card sounds incredible. Oh, and you can't beat XP for stability and performance, it benchmarks higher than a clean install of ME and always recovers from a bad bit of s/w. Don't do any MS updates though they tend to screw things up. Andi. "MadDAWG" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

And finally some words of wisdom from the thread :)) Dump the consumer based OSes MS produces (XP, ME, 98, 95) The only REAL OS MS ever put out was Windows 2000. They digressed after that... Windows 2000 is the ONLY MS OS that even comes within spitting distance of my network(s), otherwise its a BSD flavor. All my games run exceptional on my Win2000 systems (except Superbike 2001... but oh well... it don't work on XP either...). I could not in good conscience recommend win98 or ME. Save yourself the hassles... go 2000. Cheers, Schumi "Steve Garrotto" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

If you disable system restore you might as well use 98se. System Restore is the best reason to use Me and I'd recommend Me myself because of the better networking AND system restore. -Tim P.S. - Don't believe the myth that system restore creates restore points in the middle of using your computer and causes it to slow down. That is false! It'll use up disk space but disk space is a cheap price in exchange of what system restore can do for you. The other issue that hasn't been brought up yet is the fact that MS will soon stop supporting Win98 before they stop Winme support. What that means is that MS's new software will not run on any win98 machine. For example, any MS games, any new media player, the next version of Internet Explorer, Office, etc. There is no doubt that 3rd party publishers will still support win 95/98 but not Microsoft. -Tim "Steve Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:xtOy9.6401$[email hidden]... > After the troubles Alison Hine (and others) have had with XP installs, I'm > not going to upgrade to Bill Gates' latest booty-booster after all. > > The only question left: 98 or ME? > >

It's not all down to system restore - I've seen a few machines where ME absolutely refused to recognize split axis pedals on a gameport. TSW's fix for one of them was to get a USB adapter. On the XP install - are you going through the trouble of setting up a gaming build that has *all* unneeded services disabled? This would be the only fair apples/apples comparison, IMHO. I still haven't tested GPL under XP on my gaming rig, but so far 3dmark and F1-2002 are noticably faster than under 98SE (and F12k2 is actually stable!). On the other hand, RC2000 ran very poorly under XP. Stuff like refresh rate is easily fixed with Rivatuner (if you've got an nVidia card). I honestly think a 98SE/XP dual boot is your best bet. With a util like XOSL you can completely hide one boot partition from the other. With all the possible combinations of drivers and hardware, it's hard to make concrete statements anyways. Except that WinME sucks ;)... Kendt
I thought I had read somewhere that Microsoft had already stopped supporting ME. Or maybe the just stopped patching it, which I consider to be the same as supporting it. A friend of mine has a Dell running under ME, and he only has to put a games CD near it for the stupid thing to BSOD on him! No amount of driver upgrades has been able to sort this POS out. BTW, he has another Dell running under 98 which works flawlessly... Cheers Gerry

Thx one and all. I will take all this under advisement. (FWIW, SE was never a contender. I tried it on a couple of different machines and it was quirky in the extreme...like reversing one mouse axis. I leave my computers on 24/7, they all sit behind a locked-down Linksys router, and none of them have been subjected to the MS updates. My wife's computer is the only one that is 100% windows (win98), and the rest are linux boxes except for saturdays when I run the weekly rascar race (or practice for the next one). Before I started using Linux, I never went through the MS update process, and have never run an anti- virus program. All it takes is a little intelligence and a modicum of awareness of your surroundings. Stop using Outlook, turn off java/javascript/activex in your browser, don't run EXE, COM,or SCR files that you happen to get in your email or a newsgroup binary, and don't view messages/newsgropup articles as HTML. Lastly, don't run DMZ machines that are also connected to the rest of your network, and don't allow remote admin of your router. I've been programming for over 20 years (PC's for 18 years), and have been on the internet since about 1994. I've never had a virus infect my machine, and have never had a machine spoofed, cracked, mugged, DOS'd, or violated. It's not rocket science, kids - it's awareness. If you're after the networking stuff, Win2k is definitely the best at it, and you can still play games. Thx, John. W2K really isn't an option for me, either. I'm too computer-illiterate (despite 20 years of knuckle-dragging self-education) to trust myself to install it. "Installing W2k for beginners" Power on computer Open CD drive Insert Wink2 CD Close CD drive Let computer boot from CD Follow on screen instructions Have a cuppa Follow on screen instructions Have another cuppa Welcome to Windows 2k That's it basically, you need to know a few things about your LAN settings and such, but on the surface it's not that far removed from WinME Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ "A man is only as old as the woman he feels" --Groucho Marx--
Kendt: XP can be made more liveable with tweaks and hacks but there are serious compromises that were designed in to XP for security and stability reasons. An example of that is lack of support of the midi port in Direct X. That basically wipes out a lot of expensive controllers, there is no fix for this. Another is the inability to run GLIDE and other direct to metal API's properly. I agree with the dual boot situation, if one owns the two operating systems, setting up your games under 98 or ME and your dev/productivity stuff under 2K/XP is ideal. Other advantages of this is the ability to download, virus check and archive your add-on files with your "work" operating system and then run your games without having a virus checker, pop up stoppers or other productivity related applets in the background on your "Gaming" OS. Another benefit is the ability to overclock your video card in one os for gaming and run it at default clocks in your "work" os. TIP: On another note you might want to hide your XP/2K partition from your 9X but make the 9X partition visible to your 2K/XP partition, this enables you to insert files such as tracks, cars, roster packs into your games easily.

Of course if one HAS to make a choice, 98 is the one to make. 95 is just too damned old, and doesn't support USB worth a hoot. WinME is the worst, most unstable OS ever released by a manufacturer (except possibly for Apple System 7.5.1 w/Open Transport 1.01 - Those who lived it understand that). But I would choose Win98 Classic over Win98se any day of the week. 98se introduced some serious engineering flaws (most notorious being the unfixable shut-down bug). Win98 Classic with all patches applied was about the most stable 9x OS Microsoft released. IMHO. -Larry "Ian Riches" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > On Fri, 08 Nov 2002 12:53:49 GMT, "Steve Smith" > <[email hidden]> wrote: > > >After the troubles Alison Hine (and others) have had with XP installs,I'm

Steve....I'm not ridiculing you, it really IS easy, on the surface Win2k looks and feels the same as Win9x, gone is the hopeless way of managing devices that was NT4, yes there are some new menu screens and some things are not where they used to be, but in general, those who have installed WinME should have little or no problems installing Win2k The CD is bootable and will ask but a few questions before the installation starts in earnest, you can even install it alongside WinME on the same partition if you want to make the transition more smoothly and if you stick with FAT32 (Win2k will ask if you want to convert your current partition to NTFS) both OS's can see each other's files just fine, and since you have 2 other PC's you can always come here and ask, or e-mail me or someone else in here So unless you have some really obscure hardware in there somewhere, it's likely to be the least troublesome OS installation you've ever done, driver installation and everything is just like Win9x I'm not trying to convince you that Win2k is a better OS for your purposes than Win9x is, I believe it is but I'm not going to argue it, but to me it seems you're choosing not to install one of the best OS's there is for the wrong reasons I've never been to Rochester, if you've got a decent bottle of something about, I might just drop by and give you a hand :-), Air Fares across the Atlantic are pretty cheap these days anyways Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--

From what I understand when they stopped supporting Win95 last year, none of their new programs, even games will not run on win95 when any other manufacturer's games run fine on all win9x's. -Tim "Dastardly Dan" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > On Fri, 8 Nov 2002 14:19:09 -0800, "Tim Miser" > <[email hidden]> wrote: > > >The other issue that hasn't been brought up yet is the fact that MS will > >soon stop supporting Win98 before they stop Winme support. Goy, probably I get stoned now... I read somewhere that W2k has some issues with gaming, controllers or whatsoever... don't remember what it was in particular. Anyhow, that was the reason why I never looked into W2K. Any word about that? Cya JensSchumi BTW: NTFS would be a blast for my DV-work. Hi Jens, PMJI - I use an LWFF and a Sidewinder 2 FF stick under W2k. They work fine under the admin account. The one issue I had with the LWFF in W2k exclusively existed in Limited Rights User accounts. It was tricky to get this USB wheel to use FF and the FF custom settings under the LRU accounts. I had to manually give the LRU many additional access rights to individual Registry keys and I think also to directories (my memory is a bit dim, it's been two years since then) which at the time was quite a hassle as nobody seemed to know the solution and I had to figure it all out by myself. But I'd guess it all could be taken care of by the driver installation routines. Since it's been a while since then, I'd assume those who create those installation routines have taken care of this matter by now :) Achim "JS" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I think Achim pretty much summed it up in his post, but since I like to listen to my own voice....W2k is not a gaming OS, it works very well as a gaming OS in most cases however if you have the right hardware, but never being sold as a gaming OS, I suspect MS didn't offer a whole lot of support to the people making controllers so they could write drivers for whatever controller they manufacture, check the website for your particular controller and see if they have W2k drivers for it, if they do your controller should work fine, if they don't have drivers for it, all is not lost as it may or may not work with W98 drivers/software or a generic controller Chances are good that you controller will work unless it's some really old analogue thing, video and sound drivers aren't much of a issue with games anymore, although there's probably the odd game out there that will refuse to run on *your* particular system setup, Murphy's law.... Jens, the issue exists only if you want to play under accounts which don't have admins rights. If you'll be using the admin account only, you won't have that prob and W2k will be as easy to handle as WinME. Just a tad slower ;-) <bg, d&r> I've btw succeeded in acquiring an unused original LWFF and noticed what a difference your ball bearing set makes. The FF is _so_ much more detailed with the ball bearings, it's incredible. What kinds of pots are you using right now btw? I'm using a MikeT one, with three original LWFF one's in the spare box, but don't really want to return to the original pots unless absolutely necessary. "Dan_Leach" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:aqgdm6$8virr$[email hidden]... > 98se ... ME is a crappy updated version of win2k huh? WinME has nothing to do with the NT series of operating systems (of which Win2K is one) other than sharing a few networking components and a shell. WinME is a crappy updated version of Win98se. the answer is still to use 98SE over winME, though, if you dont care for XP. I personally have no trouble with XP home or pro, both running perfectly on different machines in my house.
Achim, quite funny, Alison had the same experience recently when using her spare computer with the spare wheel (not converted). About the pots: I was using both MikeT ones and the original ones. While I had only one dropout of an original pot in the wheel, I had already few in the pedals. My resume: If your pot says goodbye, get a replacement from MikeT. Cya Jens BTW: I'll give Win2K a try on my business Dell-Notebook. WinME is a pain you-know-where on this machine, dunno why. My home unit is running quite alright with WinME, problems are IMO more due to increased experiments over there. On Thu, 14 Nov 2002 09:04:49 -0000, "Joachim Trensz" <[email hidden]> wrote:

MikeT isn't making them anymore, but I thought since he's been much in contact with you about the wheel, maybe you still had a source... Achim "JS" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... ... > My resume: If your pot says goodbye, get a replacement from MikeT.
I learned that there is a High-qual pot manuacturer who has a branch here in Malaysia. I'll try to find out whether he has some decent material. I'll report in the LWFF-forum asap. JensSchumi On Fri, 15 Nov 2002 14:39:54 -0000, "Joachim Trensz" <[email hidden]> wrote:

That would be extremely good Jens. I'll keep my eyes open for your report, and would certainly take 5 pots.
