So, if this GPL mod happens...

Would you drive a GPL physics mod?

Joachim Blum asked whether people would drive a planned GPL physics-editing mod. Jan Verschueren objected to posts that assumed knowledge of web-forum debates, and Dan Leach linked the RSC forum where it was being discussed. Tony Rickard and Jan welcomed mods as the way forward for GPL, while others said they would stick to the original.

I'll quote Tom Pabst here..."What's GPL ?" :-) Nope, formula cars just isn't my thing and GPL hasn't been installed on my racing PC for a couple of years now, I may install it just to see how good these mods are, but I seriously doubt I'd put any time into actually driving it....sorry Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--

I'll probably try both, find them disappointing, and go back to playing Racing Legends (which will probably be released about the same time those mods are). Something I've been wondering - didn't F1 cars pit for fuel and tires in the 50's? I thought that the main advantage of the mid-engined Cooper in 58 was that it didn't put as much wear on the tires. The first race it was driven, Moss ended up winning even though the car was off the pace because they were the only team that didn't pit. From what I've read, I would think that tire wear modelling would be essential for a 55 sim. Jason

I doubt they will, mind, unless they find a trick to come up with aero forces (not simulated in the orig. GPL)

Excuse me, this is the second time in 3 days someone has posted a message, seemingly assuming everyone knows about a certain something being discussed on what I can only assume is one of the simracing related webforums. I would like to remind you not everyone who frequents RAS also visits these forums. I would also like to ask people who would like to broaden a certain discussion onto RAS to provide either a synopsis of the topic, quoting it's origin, or a link to the discussion. Usenet is not a platform for "in-crowd" discussion. I cannot imagine what you or Damien are attempting to acchieve starting threads like this. Posting something for discussion without telling what the discussion is about is pointless. Even as a veiled plug to get visitors to one's forum of choice, these messages fail as it's not clear where the topic originated. Jan. =---

Ill cirtainly try all the mods but im doubtfull as to whether they'll be any good or not. Even if they are i think ill stick mainly to original gpl dan "Joachim Blum" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:arbrvp$m4$00$[email hidden]... > ...will you drive it? > > Regards > Crash

Yeah, the mid-engined layout made it handle a lot better, and also used all of the tyres much more effectively. Also, with the engine in the back, it made the entire car much more streamlined, instead of punching a hole in the air with the engine at the front of the car. Amazing really, that they only put the engine in the back because they wanted to chain-drive the rear wheels, like on the bikes they were racing at the time, and it turned out to be that much of an unexpected improvement.

Surely there is but one way forward with GPL and that is to modify the game itself. Whether to correct perceived (and actual) inaccuracies, create extra cars for the '67 season (different model Coopers, McLaren, etc..), creating proper F2 and F3 cars for the original sim or going ahead and making a "total conversion" for GPL. Some of these mods will be more successfull than others, both conceoptionally and actually, but to go and condemn it from the off for fear of whatever is just unrealistic, IMO. Jan. =---

I agree Jan. The engine swapper was hotly debated as the nail in GPL's coffin, and now the suggestion of altering physics is considered the end of it. I'd love some quality mods like we get for many other sims. Greater variety might add to the multiplayer excitement rather than detract from it, especially in organised leagues. VROC was hardly full of Brabham Lotuses last time I looked. 1960s touring cars or maybe Aussie V8s anyone? Cheers Tony

Did someone say the magic word ? Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--

When "someone" releases a decent AussieV8 sim I'll stop posting here all the time and just drive instead.....my work here will be done <mad rush of people e-mailing every sim racing company they can think of> Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--

Three things: 1. there's a mere 344 messages seperating Mikkel's message from yours, that's 10 screens of headers. Without any explicit mention of this previous post there is not even a single link between the two. 2. Mikkel's header mentions nothing about any possible mod. "GPL physics editing" is not something most of us know about, so unless one reads Mikkels messages by default I assume this message was also skipped by most (as evidenced by 1 direct reply, IMO). 3. Would it hurt to say "So if these mods Mikkel mentioned..." or "So if these mods everyone's talking about on RSC.." ? BTW: I thought message numbers were server dependant? Jan. =---

Still have no idea what mod is being discussed here. Can someone please summarize? I agree with Jan BTW, it's annoying to have such an information-free post to start off the thread.
