Yes.
If you're in the States, I believe Circuit City has it in this week's
flier for $14.99.

Is F1 2002 worth buying just for GTR2002?
Posters overwhelmingly said to buy F1 2002, then on sale for about $15-20, just for GTR2002, and to donate to the SimBin team. Online play was described as weak, though Dave Henrie gave tips for 6-8 player races. Frame-rate troubleshooting, nVidia driver advice and calls for a Can-Am mod followed.
Automated summary.
Hello again,
Just had to ask....should I get F1 2002 just to play GTR 2002? All the
reviews, here and on websites, are drooling over the mod, but since I have
copies of GPL, GP3 (hope it isn't sacrilege to mention those two in the same
sentence ;) ), and F1 Racing Simulation (not too bad), I don't really need
another F1 game/sim for F1 sake. Are there any other really good...i.e. GTR
2002 caliber non-oval-track-racing mods out there for F1 2002? TIA
Sean
BTW, I'm getting a fast download of GTR 2002 from ....fileplanet of all
places. The server is: http://xferla4.fileplanet.com GoZilla download
manager helped too.
Yes. Think of it as buying GTR2002 and getting F1 2002 free... But remember
to drop by the GTR2002 webpage and make a donation ;-)

What about issues of cheats online, is there any checking to handle this?

Just wondering...can anybody confirm whether this is true? (The 14.99 price
at Circuit City, that is). I checked their website and our local flier and
couldn't find it listed in either, but I think I'll take a drive over to
pick up a copy if, in fact, it's for sale at that price.
Thanks

Can't confirm that price but I just got from CompUsa for $19.99 which is
not a sale price.

Considering F12002 is reduced in price, yes!!!!!! I donated 10 pounds to
the cause as well as paying full price for F12002 when it first came out and
I still got a bargain!
We need to support all sims, especially the work of our own brilliant and

LOL this is one of the reasons I'm staying away from playing it (I did
download it). Plus my performance is kind of crap, which shocks me, as I
have a AMD Athlon 2100+ XP, 512mb RAM DDR, Geforce4 Ti4400 128mb . Even
with that spec at 800x600x16 (ICK!) I'm seeing max framerate of about 40,
with dips bellow 30 at times!!

We run in the same GPL FD league, and all I can tell you is that I'm
spending equal time between GPL and GTR2002. It's just that good.

Something VERY wrong there....you should look to sort that out mate.
Just put my GF2 MX 400 spare card in to check out the 'lower' end
performance.
I have xp 2100+ o/c,9700 Pro,512 DDR 2100 and i said yesterday it is the
best looking yet with all on full/max.
So with just the 9700 Pro out and the GF2 mx400 in....
Everything is on Full or the odd thing is on Medium(silly things like
skidmarks,dust etc etc)
I have 35 fps on the line with full 36 cars on grid...drops to 21 when
amongst them...that is 1280 x 960 x 16.
Up to 43fps in open track....
If you have a Ti 4400 giving the same performance then something is amiss...

I don't have enough hours in the day to get away with that -- could I
borrow a couple hundred minutes that you're not using? :)
But in any case, I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of the game from
Amazon and we'll see how it works out...
You should be getting much better fps. AMD1600/512RAM DDR/GF4 Ti4400,
running 1280x1024x32-bit and I see 30fps start of race and 40 fps in the
pack. Other settings are 20 cars visible, all graphics high except for
shadows. Your cpu should push these numbers to 40 start and 50+ during the
race.
What video drivers? I'm running the 40.72's and IIRC my 3D config test was
37M triangles.

Yes!
Best game ever! (racing)
=[O-)]
Aside from the usual cautions about not overdoing it with AA and Aniso,
check your settings for shadows in the game's graphics menu. Running
shadows on full really seems to kill the FPS for some reason, even sitting
still in cockpit view with no other cars in sight. Dropping them a notch or
two really helped get me over the hump fps-wise on my XP1800/Ti4400,
although the AI cars don't have shadows any more, which is too bad.

Folks it will never equal Papy for sheer numbers, but you can run 6 to 8
with a good adsl host IF all users follow a few simple rules.
FIRST: EVeryone connect at 56k. Broadbanders...too. even the host.
This limits the amount of data sent and cuts down on lost packets and lag
problems in general.
2nd: There is a limit to how many a certain host can serve. If
everything is fine with 5 and then a 6th joins...you gotta cut somebody
loose if the connection goes bad.
3rd. IF somebody has a huge commercial line, like the RSDG server,
you can have up to 16 with minimal lag.
4th. Like I said...it's not equal to Papy, but it's better than I
expected it to be.

No absolutely not. Do NOT get it JUST for GTR. There's the ALfa mod,
the SSM LeMans mod(full of nasty yellow chevy's) a BMW M3 mod. 2 or 3
historical F1 mods. A CART mod. check out this site for a hint of whats

Let's see, I'm using the 40.72 drivers, no FSAA. Oh, I do have "Force 8
sample Anisotropic Filtering" enabled. Does this really cause such a big
performance hit? I will have to turn it off and see.
I know I should be getting much better performance so it is bothering me,
but all other games run great.

Yup Can-Am definitely, I can almost hear those big blocks now.

For what it's worth, the 40.72's were crap for me(on 98SE); buggy with lousy
IQ. I had gone back to the 30.82's, but just loaded the newest 41.09's last
night and got a nice bump in speed and IQ, with no bugs seen as of yet.
Best Nvidia drivers I've tried to date.
8X aniso filtering will definitely impact your framerate. Try lower AF
settings, 16 bit color, and/or different combo's of AA and resolution. AA
is a big hit, particularly at 4X and above. 4X works very well in OpenGL
with NR2002 and GPL, but it's a killer in F1-2002 with D3D. You can often
get better FPS by going as high as 16X12 and leaving AF off. You just have
to twiddle with it until you find your happy medium.

GeForce2 Ultra in an Asus P2B with 256 mb SDRAM and 1 GHz Celeron (in a
PowerLeap adapter).
I need to be able to run both GPL and GTR2002 (and Papy N2002
occasionally). So far I've just been using the default XP GeForce
driver, and it works ok, but I'm sure there's something better.
Also, any suggestions as to what would be the most cost effective CPU
upgrade? 1.4 GHz Celerons are cheap ($50) but it seems hard to find one
that runs on a 100 mhz FSB. Upgrade to a killer mobo, Athlon, and DDR
memory would be wonderful, but it's a bit beyond my finances right now.
Thanks!

Hi Ali, I am using a PIII @ 1G, 512M pc133, and a GeForce2 GTS/Pro w
64m, and GTR2002 runs pretty well for me....I'm also using a tweaker for the
vid card to o'clock it some(core to 235mhz, memory to 400 mhz) and under d3d
options, mipmapping is set to "Blend".....what I found, which makes no
sense, is that there is no fps penalty for higher resolutions, I found this
to be the same with GPL and N2002 as well. 1600x1200 x16 bit @ 60 hz
produces nice graphics at 50-60 fps, which is plenty for smooth feel, but
most graphics options are set to low, and of course, no AA or anisotropic.
If I leave all other settings alone, and redo 3D setup at 640 or 800, I get
no higher fps as a result, and these low rez's with either AA or aniso kill
frames......so far, my best all around setup is 1600x1200 as described.
PS ver28.32 drivers for the card, and Win XP Pro
^^^^^^I swiped the above from a previous post of mine, it's all still true,
as to your driver question, I used the 23.11v drivers previously on this
rig, and saw no real improvement with the 28.32's, I might just have to
revert back and try them again.
As far as upgrades go, you should NEVER take upgrade advice from me, unless
you're spending someone else's money.
One last thing, THANKS again for the Sweet Red Candy setups, they made GPL
come alive for me and really got me hooked, and in a previous post someone
else mentioned that you were probably the one person who could get the net
code in GTR worked out to make it actually usable......no pressure or
anything :^)

Alison, i just built a system recently for pretty cheap. You can get a
motherboard for an Athlon XP that will use SDRAM.
I got the Gigabyte GA7-ZXE for $57 and an Athlon 1800+ for $74, it works
great, and you can just drop your SDRAM right in. (and pick up 256 megs more
for around 30 bucks) By the way I used tcwo.com which is in the top 10 on
reseller ratings. (i live near them so i went and picked it up)

I like the 21.83 drivers. The GF2 doesn't really benefit from the
latest drivers much. They are optimized for the GF3 and GF4.
I use to have a Celeron 450 a year ago. I bought a K7S5A plus an
Athlon. This mobo, can use DDR as well as my old SDR SDRAM. Just
plugged in my old HD, video, etc. and that was it. I'm sure it's
much cheaper now. You might even see combo deals for the
K7S5A+AthlonXP1700 for under $100. Plus with this setup you can
upgrade up to an AthlonXP 2400+ and use DDR in the future.

Go to www.nvidia.com download the latest official driver (WHQL) for XP
(40.xx) - the new drivers are usually much faster than the XP default
one!

Very true. The default GeForce driver supplied with Windows XP is
exceptionally slow and doesn't support OpenGL.

All 1.4GHz Celerons run at 100MHz FSB, but your motherboard doesn't
support the new Celerons with Tualatin core...
