Tonight (Wednasday 4th) there is a show on Channel 4 called faking it.
The premise is that it takes a person with zero experience in a given field,
provides a month's intensive training, then sees if he/she can pass themself
off as expert to people who *are* experts but are completely unaware of the
setup.
Tonight it's a videogame tester who plays racing games being coached by
David Coulthard to pass himself off as a bona-fide driver...
Should be interesting...

Channel 4 'Faking It' turns games tester into racer
Mark Davison flagged a Channel 4 'Faking It' episode in which a games tester trained for a month to pass as a racing driver. Viewers found the participant arrogant and embarrassing for sim racers, while Alex Porazinski mentioned his own real Formula Ford results after years of sim racing.

guys name is Philip Deane, ran a google search and it looks like he came 8th
out of 9 in a BARC Formula Renault race at rockingham earlier this year.
also had his videography (is that even a word?) from one of the developers,
and it doesnt look like he's beta'd any proper racing sims (although i could
be wrong).
according to the sunday papers review of the show (its critics choice in the
times), phil didnt really get along with his mentors, and they didnt get
along with him.
now if he'd played GPL before this all happened.......

Two of the three judges picked him as the faker, the other one thought he
was so bad that he was a red herring.
I would have killed people to have an opportunity like that!

After they cut away from the race, the judges would have happily
accepted that he was real, if just not very good.
Poor lad (!) didn't realise what a t*&t he came over as when he just
opened his gob.
4 weeks being trained by those guys, money no object, visiting DC and
JH - how many people would I have killed to have had that opportunity.
Bastard.......

IMO any decent REAL
sim racer would have done a lot lot better

Jesus what a plank.
And it how many of our non-simming friends will have seen that and thought
that we were the same? Made me embarrassed for my hobby.
I can not believe such a complete wanker got selected. I know, I know.
It's because having a dickhead to laugh at on TV is more entertaining than
someone who's actually got a chance. Thing is, although I have not seen
that many episodes of the show, I saw a classical cellist become a club DJ
convincingly (many years ago I DJed) and have seen a couple of others that
were serious attempts at conning the pros, but this is the only one that
I've seen that basically took the piss.
Maybe the producers were genuinely caught out by how much of a total plank
this geezer was.
He truly did believe that because he'd played some console racing games he
could come in, drive by the seat of his pants and *win*!
And that interview. He actually claimed that he had some new racing
techniques that he was passing up and down the pitlane and that other
drivers were thankful!
My God. As my wife says, he'll look back at that in 15 years time and die
of embarrasment. That, or he'll still be testing videogames and living with
his parents...
"What do you think makes Michael Schumacher so special"
"His consistency. [so far so good] Well he must be good. I've watched him
on TV and the commentators always make a big deal when he goes off..." [oh
dear]

Mark

I would if I could!
If you're interested, I'll see if I've still got it on tape. If you're
willing to pay shipping costs (have no idea what that would be) then I can
mail the tape to you.

he was probably a prize twat before the program.
he was definitely a prize twat during the program.
he is knowingly a prize twat after the program.
well done Channel4 for warning the nation to stay away from any
games testers called Phil Deane living in Lincoln.
