RSC - increasing difficulty?

Making Rallisport Challenge AI harder

A player found Rallisport Challenge's AI too easy and later found a hidden 'Ludicrous' difficulty by editing the profile file, which he shared. Others debated the game's merits: Jan Verschueren criticised its controls, force feedback, physics and stages, while fans praised the hill climbs and track design.

When doing a single race in RalliSport Challenge, I easily beat the 3 other AI cars. All I see is Beginner and Normal setting when setting up a player profile. There isn't any Hard setting?! Gets real boring waxing the AI all the time. Even if I give them a head start I end up catching up and easily passing them; they never keep up. Anyway to make the AI cars more competitive? I'd play online but I haven't a clue as to where to find other players. Is there a RSC hangout?

No, but it trades that feature for actually being a good sim... ;-)

I think everyone knows that now. Thanks. There is still room for other games in this group I hope ;-) I have GT2002 and it's a masterpiece, but sometimes I enjoy a quick blast on a game like RSC.

Gee, I like replying to my own posts. Is this game that bad that no one talks about it? <shrug> I think it's the best racing game in years. Anyway, FYI, there is a setting higher than Normal. I'm managed to hack the profile.dat file and get "Ludicrous" difficultly to activate and work but I can't figure out how to get this harder setting AND all cars and tracks at the same time. Hm, I wonder if that can be unlocked in the demo or the xbox version. I traded my copy of RSC for the PC when I picked up my xbox last week. =/ Jason

Did you beat the game already on normal? I only finished the first couple of stages on easy, and it was quite easy, so maybe normal is too easy. I don't mind having to earn the cars and tracks. Part of the reward is unlocking them. It's that whole career type thing. It seems to be a good game, maybe not quite as good as I was hoping for, but still good. I haven't played it recently. It doesn't run so great on my Radeon 9700. I'm going to wait for ATI to make some better drivers for the game. Too much stuttering. It's probably not talked about alot on R.A.S, 'cause most folks here are a bunch of stuck up blowhards who wouldn't know fun if it bit them on the butt. Rally games/sims are fun, 'cause most people who play them don't nitpick the realism to death and Papyrus has never touched them. It's just pure driving without the bull of endlessly tweaking setups or practice laps.

Destroy <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:<[email hidden]>... > Gee, I like replying to my own posts. Is this game that bad that no one > talks about it? <shrug> I think it's the best racing game in years. I have two computers here. One I use for most games and my daily work (my "normal" PC), and one dedicated for racing games (my "race" PC). I test most games on my normal PC first, because it has the faster processor and a GF4. When I tested RSC, my first impression was "cool, this could be a very nice racing game!". I don't have a steering wheel on this PC so I test with keyboard only. I drove a few stages with the keyboard and I thought it was way too easy. I could outrun the other cars quite easily and finish with a lead of anywhere between 20-60 seconds. But still I thought it was fun. Then I installed it on the Race PC that has a Force Feedback steering wheel. Why is it that game developers just can't get it right? Why does the steering wheel feels completely detached from the car? Why does the steering wheel feel like it's acting like a gamepad? I've tried different settings, fiddled with the sensitivity and dead zones, but it never felt right. And that's why I returned the game. There are a few racing games that do an excellent job with steering wheels, but IMO RSC isn't one of them. -----------== Posted via Newsfeed.Com - Uncensored Usenet News ==---------- http://www.newsfeed.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----= Over 100,000 Newsgroups - Unlimited Fast Downloads - 19 Servers =-----

Hmmm.... recent events would prove you wrong, it seems. ;-) Rally Sport Challenge does not offer a lasting challenge. Unresponsive controls, laughable force feedback, dodgy physics, erratic AI and mostly uninspired trackdesign see to that. A missed opportunity and definately not fun. Don't get me wrong, I can enjoy these games for what they are, if they're good. POD was fun, MotorHead was fun, ReVolt was fun, 1nsane was fun, Stunt GP was fun, Crazy Taxi was fun. Emphasis on "was", though, as in: uninstalled, sold, outta here. Only sims provide lasting interest for me. > Rally games/sims are fun, 'cause most people who play > them don't nitpick the realism to death and Papyrus has > never touched them. RC2000 was a pretty good effort, though limited by its technology/scope. The original CMR was good for its day, too. I don't care much for the later incarnations as the emphasis seems to have shifted towards cool ways to smash up the car rather than attempting to give the driver any usefull feedback of what is underfoot or improving the world interaction physics (I want to be able to run a 1/2 inch sapling down, regardless of what environmentalists say). This can be done without pushing for total realism (cfr. NFS:PU). I'm amazed you use the term "pure driving"... nothing in RSC is anything remotely like driving a rally car. Ok, so neither is simracing physically remotely like racing a real car, but at least those games trick your brain into believing it is. Jan. =---
> Did you beat the game already on normal? I only finished the first > couple of stages on easy, and it was quite easy, so maybe normal is > too easy. When I first got the game I started playing through the Career mode on Normal. I was having a hard time winning anything. I quickly restarted on Beginner mode and it was easy in the beginning but I'm on like stage 5(?) or so and am having a heck of a time winning again. It seems the Career mode is much more difficult than Single Race mode hence my want for more competitive AI cars. > > I don't mind having to earn the cars and tracks. Backwash of a console port I suppose. > > It seems to be a good game, maybe not quite as good as I was hoping > for, but still good. I agree. Its more on the arcade side than I like but the jaw dropping gfx and lack of invisible walls 2 feet off the side of the course were the real selling points for me. The hill climb courses are simply amazing in this game. > > I haven't played it recently. It doesn't run so great on my Radeon > 9700. The frame rate was indeed much higher and had great picture (AA +Aniso) but there was a lot of stuttering in many games that I just couldn't get rid of. I believe it was an incompatibility with my computer components. > Rally games/sims are fun, 'cause most people who play them don't > nitpick the realism to death and Papyrus has never touched them. > Rally Sport Challenge does not offer <snip> and mostly > uninspired trackdesign see to that. Whoa! I'll stop the train right here. I'll give you props for RSC having definite certain short comings but course design is not one of them. The courses in RSC are damn impressive if not remarkable. Change your 'mostly' to 'a few' and I'll agree but most of the tracks in RSC are simply outstanding.

Which explains why I'm having so much fun with it using my Wingman RumblePad. :) RSC is like 75% arcade and 25% sim - standard console fair I guess.

Just playing the demo with the keyboard, it's possibly the most fun I've had with an arcade racer, and it has a better damage model than any Papyrus or ISI simulation. =) I'm still disappointed, as far as arcade racers go, that EA made such bad use of the ISI engine instead of just porting the XBOX Nascar Thunder 2003 to the PC. It's more convincing despite using a less refined physics engine, has much more immersion, more modes, and a fantastic kick-your-ass-repeatedly career mode. Jason

The hill climb stages are awesome, despite being ridiculously short and having little replay value. The rallicross and ice racing tracks are good, too. The actual special stages, however, are completely lame. What is the point of driving a rally car with no damage model for 2 minutes at a time on tracks that are wider than your mom? It defeats the entire purpose of the sport, the entire test of car and driver endurance which defines rallying. A rally sim with 2-3 minute stages is like a NASCAR sim without pitstops or cousins groping on a trailer in the infield. There are certain defining characteristics of each form of motorsport, and in rally the stages define the sport. The focus isn't on the drivers, as in F1 or NASCAR, or on the cars as in WSC - it's on the stages. Why no one with a rally license realizes that is beyond me. Jason

I think it was either fixed in the release or patched. Don't hold your breath, however, as driving it with an FF wheel seriously killed the magic of the demo for me. Also beware you've all but seen it's best trick. Hardly any of the other cars and courses in the game are quite as good. > I've always wanted to pick it up but when it came out > I was stuck with a k6-2 500/voodoo 4 which didn't > really cut the mustard. I'll check the readmes for the patches to see if that was fixed, and if so, I'll definitely be searching for a copy of it (I think the local EB still has one for $5 or something). As far as FF goes. I don't use it, so I suppose that's an advantage. >Also beware you've all but seen it's best trick. Hardly any of the other >cars and courses in the game are quite as good. Ouch. That certainly sucks, altho in all honesty if I could get my MS wheel working well in the demo that would be nearly enough to keep me entertained. >At least with the ISI engine it's "mod-able" <g> I've always wanted to make a mod that was totally and ridiculously undriveable, then get an inside-joke type thing going with some prominent RAS and VROC people so they'd keep posting here how incredible it was and so forth. How many months till 4/1? Jason

Phew, ok, I figured it out (should work, let me know here if it doesn't). If you find RSC too easy on both Beginner and Normal, here is a crack file that has Ludicrous difficulty set with all cars and all tracks available. Enjoy. Put this file (backup old file first, duh) and overwrite in your c:/windows/application data/microsoft/rallisport challenge/profile/yournick folder http://my.execpc.com/~struye/profile.dat Destroy wrote:
