My system is about 2 years old, Asus a7v m/b with a 1000mhz t-bird and 512
ram and win98se. The problem started a few months ago and is getting worse.
It started out when ever I needed to reboot it wouldn't. It would spin the
hard drive and then the monitor would shut off and I would let it cool down
for 5 min then it would start fine. Now it takes an hour or so before it
will startup again. I changed my power supply and cpu fan. I even changed
the fan on my video card(asus v7700). All operating temps are fine. I tried
disconnecting each piece of hardware and still no luck. The thing wont even
let me get in the bios so im thinking its the motherboard. Other than this
the computer works as good as win98 will allow. Any ideas? What's the best
m\b cpu combo?
You have said alot but i am still confused...
Why wont it 'let' you get into Bios....?
Take CONTROL man...go on try it...."I am a MAN.." ;)
You have made a start up floppy...?
That is a decent mobo....your answers might divulge a little more :)

Its either the CPU or mobo if it woun't let you POST. I would think HD or HD
cables but even a mobo without a HD will post and tell you that NO OS IS
PRESENT so.... so long as you put in a decent power supply when you replaced
it and you're sure your RAM is ok (bad RAM can do bad things) then look at
the mobo and/or the CPU.
Does the memtest at startup look ok when it happens? If it stalls there, it
could be the RAM. Make sure it is seated good or have it tested at the local
computer shop.
My guess is the power-on detection circuitry on the mobo is failing, from
dried-out capacitors or whatever. Either that or the power supply.
Remember if you replace the mobo, you need to decide whether to dump your
old ram or not. A cpu+ram+mobo combo can be as little as $200-300. Use
