Logitech Z680 speakers and other sim audio setups

Steve Smith praised the Logitech Z680 5.1 speakers for GTR2002. The thread became a comparison with Klipsch ProMedia, Monsoon and hi-fi setups, with users reporting both praise and build-quality problems for Klipsch.

The reviews sounded like the Z680s were awesome...and it is...but the sales bot @ CompUSA said the quality was the usual Logitech crap; his Z560s lasted abt. a week before the subwoofer blew out. That's better than my last Creative 5.1 Inspires...they were DOA. Anyway, I took the extended warranty (which I *never* do), just in case. Why mess with all the pretenders?? Get some "Klipsch" speakers!! I have the 2.1's($169.00) and they ROCK!! They are also THX certified. SpeedRat

I agree wholeheartedly. I have the Klipsch Pro Media 2.400's , and combined with my Audigy 2 they are simply awesome. I am eyeing their 5.1's, but there have been some buggy reports on failures with those so I will probably wait a little longer till they get that sorted out. Heck, even with a headphone plugged into the headphone jack on the power pod, the sound is incredible. -- Don Burnette

Klipsch are no better (nice hype machine over bass and not much more). I had the 4.1's and the satellite connectors ALL broke after 18 months (sound would fade/drop off and I would need to jiggle the wire). Klipsch support did nothing for me (I didn't expect free speakers but I did expect a discount off the satellite replacement price would have been nice). I did my homework and found the Monsoon MH 505 5.1's. Best speakers I've ever owned (only $140 - a few hundred cheaper than the Klipsch). However obvious, it merits mentioning that you don't know what you're missing until you experience something superior. These speakers showed me that muddy, overbearing bass is not quality, dynamic sound (Klipsch and Logitech are muddy and distorted). The Monsoons, using cones and planar focus flat panel technology in the satellites, are exceptional. I never heard the clarity in the mids and highs I hear now. I also enjoy the precise and clear bass which may never shake the desk (good boom for its size) but more than makes up for it with quality sound. While they are great for gaming, they especially shine vs. the competition in music and DVD movies. Just my 2 cents based on what I've learned and experienced with speakers. -- Joe M.
Harmon Kardon, Harmon Kardon.... Didn't that used to be a stereo manufacturer in the 1950s? I wonder who bought the name. Maybe the same outfit that bought the Stromberg-Carlson mame.... ;o) Yer right, tho, the Paradigm's rock! "Michael Sisson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:MPG.186551891ac760499896b0@nntp...

Right you are, Joe. I wasn't saying the 680s were the best speakers I've ever heard; I was saying they're the best value in a self-powered speaker system I've ever heard. The best speakers I've ever heard were monolithic Beveridge columns driven by tubed Audio Research equipment in the 80s. I haven't paid much attention to hi-fi since then (featuresets have become more important to me than pure fidelity). The only planar speakers I ever liked (other than the Bevs) were Magneplanars (and I'm glad to see theiy're still around, unlike Beveridge). I listened to the first Monsoons and they sounded tinny. But I see at this year's SEMA show that the "Fast & the Furious" Import Scene denizens favor Monsoon's car audio stuff now. Maybe I should give 'em another listen.... I didn't think you said they were the best ever, you're not much for hyperbole around here. ;0) I was replying to speed rat who called the Logitech's pretenders and praised the highly overrated Klipsch (Logitech is no worse than Klipsch). I consider the 680's a terrific value, certainly a better overall choice than Klipsch. It's also personal taste. Some people prefer booming bass and might not like the subtle yet accurate bass of the Monsoons. BTW, the planar's on the 505's succeed because of the included cone speaker (3" I believe) which handle the mid range nicely. Thankfully, they are not tinny at all. PS-My favorite speaker (value & performance) are B&W. I bought a nice center channel for my HT (store was closing) and now I am impatient to buy the L/R. If only there were a currency producing tree in the yard. -- Joe M. "Steve Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:JkNK9.50689$[email hidden]... > Right you are, Joe. Yes! I had a lovely set of pyramid-shaped B&Ws back in the 70s. Sold 'em to a musician who still has 'em and still loves 'em. Prolly shouldn't have sold 'em at all. Just before my interest in hi-fi waned (when 'putas came along), I bought a set of Cerwin-Vega lease-breakers with 15-inch woofers! Drove them with 2 pairs of bi-amped 400-watters. Lost interest in the music at abt. the same time...after having grown up with no interest in music, then fell in love with classical (Baroque), then rock (the Stones), then disco (hey, it was the 70s!), then country. Now I listen to my parents' tunes (Sinatra, Basie, Torme) on one of my TV cable's music channels. What happened? I've got Monsoon 702's as well, and they are absolutely spectacular for the price range. The new Planar 9's should be even better and at a great price. Crystal clear sound. They lack a bit of midrange, but I've fixed that on my SBlive with the parametric equalizer hack by boosting the midrange frequencies 7 Db at a 1 octave range centered at 290 Hz. They are now full sounding with that tweak. Also, the monsoon's planar drivers need some breaking in, so out of the box, they will have too much treble and will sound tinny. Play some tunes on them at moderately high volume and after a couple of weeks of use, the treble will be reduced and the midrange will come into its own. Great stuff. Mach42 http://www.mach42f1.com

I've got the Klipsch ProMedia 5.1's, and have zero desire to ever own another set of speakers. And with the Klipsch's, it's actually possible to do that due to the build quality. -Larry "SpeedRat" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in messagenews:<wGAK9.50276$hw3.7544@sccrnsc04>...

When the ProMedia 5.1's first came out a year ago there was a problem with a component in the amp that caused problems for some. Quite a few, actually. But Klipsch has been praised for the handling of the issue and as far as I know this hasn't been a problem for a long, long time. I had the issue and a brand-new set showed up on my doorstep 2 days after I notified them by email, and postage was paid BOTH ways by Klipsch. Not a single issue since. -Larry "Don Burnette" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

If the Klipsh ProMedia 5.1's bass sounds muddy to you, then you should clean the dirt out of your ears before getting them wet in the shower :) -Larry "Joe M." <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Unfortunately build quality is suspect in my experience. The 4.1 satellites had problems after 18 months. Yes, all 4 speakers. The jack inputs went bad (faulty connections where I had to fiddle with the wire just to get sound). After "upgrading" (cheaper price yet better speakers) to Monsoon MH 505's (5.1 system) I finally know the full range of sound speakers can produce. I've read that the 5.1 are a nice improvement over the 4.1's but Klipsch has lost me as a customer. Too damn expensive for that shelf life. -- Joe M. FYI... The 5.1's use standard wire-clips now. -Larry "Joe M." <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Unfortunately build quality is suspect in my experience. Or longer. They started off with those ridiculous folded-horn enclosures, which pumped gobs of muddy bass, with a cement-shattering resonance abt. 80 Hz (or "cps" as we called it in those days). Klipsch's x.1 computer series is actually quite listenable, IMO. I like the Z680s primarily for their more flexible featureset (digital inputs, etc.) "Billy-Bob" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > On Fri, 20 Dec 2002 19:01:21 GMT, "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote: > > >I've got the Klipsch ProMedia 5.1's, and have zero desire to ever own > >another set of speakers. > > > >And with the Klipsch's, it's actually possible to do that due to thebuild > >quality. > > > >-Larry > > Klipsch has not made good speakers in 25 years!
