Just a quick one... I'm looking at upgrading in the very near future, and have managed to convince the wife to let me spend an (almost) obscene amount of cash on my rig. The question that I need answering though is wether GPL will run without probs on a Radeon 9500 in OpenGL or DirectX modes? If it doesnt then I may have to wait until the NV30 cards hit the shelves. Thanks.

Well I run a AIW 8500 in D3D with all eye candy and addons with no problem. Anthony
Runs fine on my 9700. There are some texture join lines in the sky on certain tracks, and as yet no FSAA. No issues otherwise. rms [email hidden]

I'd go ahead and get the 9700 Pro if I were you (and get a motherboard that supports AGP8X while you're at it). I'm running a 9700 Pro on an Asus A7V8X, and it runs GPL just fine in D3D. I get some weird texture thigs going on in OGL.
Whassamatta with the 9500 Pro? Half the money and about 90% of the performance. I just got one. If you're willing to settle for 90% of the performance, it's just the right card for you. In article <w7EL9.79950$[email hidden]>, ssmith12 @rochester.rr.com says...

The funny thing is, most people see 90% of the performance and get put off. They don't realise that in a coupla weeks the card they buy for twice the price will only have 90% of the performance of an even newer card.

Actually, we do realize it. The problem is that most people can afford to upgrade only once a year (if even that often). So, you wait for something great to come out, save up for it, and snag it when you can afford it. If you always sit on the fence waiting for the "next fastest card", you'll be stuck with your TNT2/Voodoo2 combo for a long freakin time. I bought a Radeon 8500, only to see nVidia's frame rates excede the 8500's by leaps and bounds. The 9700 Pro promised big things, but I waited for the card to come out before making a decision. My (retail) card cost me $70 less than the card did when it was first released. Sure, nVidia may slap ATI around a little with their next card, and ATI will (hopefully) keep raising the bar themselves, but that doesn't mean that just because I'm lusting after their fastest board, I'm not necessarily gonna run out and buy one. I could afford the extra 10% performance, so I bought it. Everyone's idea of the preferrable price per feature is different.

Link that might interest 9700(non-pro) and 9500 users: http://home.mindspring.com/~warp11/ Now if ATI would just offer 16-bit FSAA! Kendt

That's exactly what I do. You have to pick a point where you say "right, that's it, I'm going out to buy the best thing on the market I can afford". I bought my original 3dfx for just over 100, and it lasted me for ever, but is it really worth paying that much more for that little hike in performance? The people who go for the second-best on the market still have pretty decent cards, but they can upgrade them sooner than the guys that went big. Everybody is different. I am perfectly happy with my GF2, and only the prospect of Deus Ex 2, Doom 3 and Thief 3 is making me want to upgrade. But by the time that comes around, I will be able to get a GF4 for about 10 after NV30 hits the streets... Nick.
