Have you flashed the latest Bios Don?, this was just released. http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=A7N8X%20Deluxe I have an AsusA7V333 that seemed buggy for awhile. I won't comment on the MoBo issues as I've not had any experience with the nForce chip sets myself yet, but I'm not too surprised.....although my utter distaste for anything nVidia is well known so we needn't go there :-) As for your noise issues, if you have a noisy CPU cooler it's because you got bad advice from your dealer, I'm running a 2600+ myself and it's dead quiet, my choice of CPU cooler is the Glacial Tech Igloo 2320 (non PRO), we're using this cooler as the default cooler in the systems we build for our customers as well and we get no complaints about noise, it's rated at 25db and can handle up to 2600+ CPU's and even over here it's less than 25 dollars, CoolerMaster has one that is rated at 25db as well but seems to emit less noise standing next to it compared to the Igloo AMD vs Intel....old "fight" :-), my next CPU will most likely be from Intel as well, but for other reasons than yours Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--

Intel's are no less complex these days. And unless you are overclocking, the processor/Fan thing is not a problem. Just spend $20 more and get the Boxed version of the processor with the factory heatsink. I've always bought boxed processors (mainly for the 3 year warranty) and I've yet to ever need anything other than the factory heatsink/fan in the box. Some of this heatsink/fan stuff is off the map :) And yes, I use the factory thermal tape too. I've never needed any sort of fancy thermal grease to get the job done. Get a cooler with an 80mm fan and a low noise fan, Panaflo L or Vantec Stealth (plycon is a good source). Don't overclock.

I have an Asus A7V8X/XP1900,512mb PC2700 DDR, ATI 9700pro, and I haven't had a single problem. Most of the people that have problems are clueless morons who refuse to read their fuckin manuals, or who don't properly research their hardware before they buy it. Then, there's the 1% of that group who have real DOA boards (and we're not talking about just Asus either)...

With boxed Intel, you know for sure you are going to get quiet, adequate cooling with no worries. I'm sorry, but I still disagree with you, you're comparing a BOXED version of Intel vs an OEM version of AMD with an aftermarket fan....furthemore my GlacialTek Igloo fan is just as quiet as any of Intel's BOXED fans, is rated for the XP2600+, and it's not overly expensive I would suggest that you ended up with the "wrong" fan because of your unfamiliarity with AMD's, which is totally understandable since it's your first AMD system, but had you gone the other way and bought OEM Intel CPU's, you would have the exact same problem you know :-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--

Goy, I bought a Zalman Copper 'Flower' Heatsink with a 90mm fan. I was so disgusted with the deafeningly-noisy, 'Coolermaster' fan that my supplier threw in with my OEM XP 1800+. However, I've been very dissappointed with this combo too - I find that the CPU runs so hot with this copper heatsink that I have to run the 90mm fan at its maximum speed making it nearly as loud as the original fan. Have you had any experience with these (expensive) Zalmans? Are the GlacialTek Igloos any better?

Hi Damien Sorry, don't know the brand and I had a hard time finding a URL using Google but I assume you're talking about the one that looks like a Japanese fan or something ? :-), and yes, the "standard" Coolermaster fans are somewhat noisy If that's the one you're using, I saw one site which rated the fan noise at some 31 dBA, which isn't particularly noisy, but since the dBA scale is Logarithmic (?) and the noise level doubles for every 10 dBA it would still be about 50% louder than these two fans http://www.coolermaster.com/products/cpucooler/silent/cp5-7jd1b-0l.html http://www.glacialtech.com/socket_a.htm It says on the GlacialTech site that they recommend the 2320 for 2100+, but on the box it comes in it says it's rated for the 2600+ as well, but if you're having heat problems it might be an idea to look at the 2410 instead, the dBA's listed there are factory specs of course, I wouldn't take them at face value, but if the Zalman fan is rated at 31.1 dBA by the factory, then I would assume that these fans are at least somewhat quieter When you say it's running so hot you need to turn the fan speed up, what kind of temps are you seeing ? If you're running an ASUS board, temps in the middle to high 60's (C) is not uncommon, my 2600+ is running at an indicated 67C at full load and is nothing but stable, some MoBo's report higher temps than others on AMD CPU's as opposed to Intel where the temps on the same CPU fluctuate only within a couple of degrees from one MoBo to the next whereas with AMD's you might easily see 10,15 and even 20C difference from an ASUS board to an MSI board and this difference throws a lot of people off it seems If your CPU runs stable under 100% CPU load then it's probably not over heating despite what the temp sensors might be telling you Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "goyl at nettx dot no" "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ "A man is only as old as the woman he feels" --Groucho Marx--

It's an excellent board Don, I have one running here. Some people have probs with WinXP, have a look over in the forums of www.ambmb.com or www.nforcershq.com or alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.asus for causes and solutions. Usually out of the box this board runs just fine, with a few exceptions as you'll find them with every new board, but they seem to all be related to the early BIOS versions, to excessive or sloppily carried out overclocking attempts, or to general user error. Your list of copied headings sings this song loud and clear as well. This is one of the finest (and the fastest) Athlon board(s) around. Achim
