My wife managed to pick up a copy of F1 2002 yesterday on one of her many,
many shopping sprees. I've been half-heartedly looking out for it for the
past few weeks but nowhere local had a copy. She got it from a Virgin store
for 19.95.
I loaded it up this morning and went for a spin in Eddie's Shaguar. Came
back to the pits, made some changes to the controller settings (do half of
these sliders even do anything??) and after half an hour or so of tweaking
those, managed to make the car halfway driveable and went for a drive
instead of a spin.
Admittedly this was a very limited try of the game, but it's okay, no GPL,
but better than Rally Trophy. The force feedback seems to want me to know
about every little bit of gravel in my path but has little interest in
actually telling me what the car is doing. There's loads of settings to
change the ff, all of which do exactly the same except for one, so I ended
up using that. The 'off' setting.
I had started with all the aids on, since this is the default, but quickly
got irritated by brake assist, steering assist, traction control, the list
is seemingly endless. With them all on you can more or less plant it & watch
the scenery it's that easy, so I did what any decent gpl'er would do and
switched every last one of them off.
It got harder, a bit. Judging the braking points was the hardest part, I
kept braking waaay too early, but at least that's better than the
alternative I guess ;-)
I got bored lapping Silverstone after an hour or so, but I'd familiarised
myself with the circuit at least, so after a quick try in Schumi's Fezza
(felt exactly the same to me) I had a look for the exit button and managed
to get
back to the desktop after a mere 5 minutes or so.
I'd downloaded the GTR mod already (265Mb, took about 3 hours) so I double
clicked the file & waited.
Has it crashed?
Oh bugger was the download corrupted?
No, I checked on the task manager and it was definitely doing something. I
had a look in the temp folder and sure enough it was filling up with mas
files and the like.
I scanned over the Readme.txt from the temp folder while it was extracting,
which rather thoughtfully explained that the apparent lack of anything
happening after running the exe was perfectly normal.
I followed the instructions, pointed the install to my fresh F1 2002 folder
and it all painlessly put itself in the right places. When it was done, I
started F1 2002 again and had a look around the menus to see what had
changed.
Nothing. Bugger, I've done something wrong.
The Readme file had gone from the temp folder by now, so I had a look in the
game folder & reopened it, read it properly this time and discovered that
there's a separate exe for the GTR mod, so I dragged a shortcut onto my
desktop & ran it.
It immediately crashed and I had to end task on the game to get out of it.
ZoneAlarm had popped up asking for internet access in the background, but
fortunately it was just the GTR exe file wanting access to the 127.0.0.1
loopback adapter, so it was okay to allow it.
I re-ran GTR & this time it worked fine. I had to set up another driver
despite my having just spend quite a while setting up controller assignments
etc in the F1 game, but after 10 minutes or so of opening F1, checking
settings, closing it, opening GTR, altering the setting, going back to F1
and so on, I had a copy of the original driver settings in the GTR mod.
I had a look at the cars available and picked the black Lamborghini, just
because it looked cool, and took it to Silverstone again because I'd spent
the morning there in the Jag & knew the track.
Now this was more like it ;-) The engine noise was glorious, none of that
busy bee F1 stuff, but real Italian engineering rubbing itself vigorously
against other bits of Italian engineering in that special way that only
Italian engineers can manage ;-)
No real grip to speak of, brakes were awful, I loved it.
I did a few laps & thought I was really improving until I realised that the
tyres & brakes had just taken a while to warm up, and found I could now
smear on the brakes, dive into corners and go much, much harder than I had
been.
I went back to the pits & changed the brake bias back a bit (default was
65%!) to 55%, then remembered I'd seen an option to assign buttons for
changing the brake bias in-car, so I set the buttons & went back out again.
I took it fairly easy for the first few laps 'till it was all warmed up,
then gave the Lambo some wellie.
Fantastic fun, tail all squirmy accelerating out of the new Abbey, adjusted
the bias a few times to improve the feel & felt right at home.
I haven't tried any of the other cars or tracks yet, but for me, it was
worth 20 just for the Lambo and a track to drive it on.
If Racing Legends ever comes out it'll have to be pretty damned amazing to
beat this. The GTR mod, imo is right up there with gpl, no question.
If you haven't got this yet, go get it. Believe me, you'll love it ;-)
Malc.
Flame warA GPL fan's first impressions of F1 2002 and GTR2002
Malc posted a review of F1 2002 and the GTR2002 mod from a GPL driver's point of view. David G Fisher attacked him for GPL elitism, and others called Fisher a jerk and a bigot. The rest of the thread praised Doug Arnao's setups and physics, discussed tips, the Road Atlanta track and RC2000, and compared GTR's interiors with GPL's.
Automated summary.
very nice review. if i hadn't downloaded the mod yet, i would now.

Of course you would only look for it half heartedly, after all, it's not
GPL.

Of course not. Why can't they make a controller configuration setup like
Papy's....blah....blah....blah......

Of fucking course not.
Onme thing that's different, it doesn't have GPL's crappy tire model which
gives an arcade like driving experience.

Sure.

Good choice. Genius.

Yea, why even bother including options in a game for anyone who isn't
hardcore like, oh, I don't know, a GPL'er? We're the hardest of the hard
core hardy hard hard mother hard on hard asses. Of course you didn't have to
use them.

Like I said. GPL'ers are like one, great, big hard on.

Yea, these new "go kart" circuits suck (had to say it, it's required GPL'er
speak).

Uh, all the cars feel different but since your a GPL'er we'll just say
you're right anyway.

And there we have it. Yet ANOTHER GPL'er who gives a sim a few minutes and
pronounces it "no GPL".
What a surprise. 2003 is almost upon us and we still have to read this same
old shit. Everyone does those dumb end of the year awards. I'd like to
nominate a new award that can be given on one of the auto sim web sites. How
about we give GPL'ers an award for "The group of auto simmers who thinks
they know more than anyone, but actually dont know shit award"? We can also
give them three posthumous awards for the previous years' work.

HA!
How do I get GPL to run on my P7 - 5.9 Thz beast with 64gigs of RAM?
Is it a compatibility issue with my Centri-Force9 vidcard with 2 gig?
It wont load.
And my glass of warm milk is getting cold waiting.
Besides, if I cant get it running by 7:30, im off to bed anyway.
Honey could you please bring my slippers and the photo album of me at Lemans
in 1958.
I just dont understand these young kids nowdays....

Looks like I hit a nerve ;-)
I actually liked the standard game, I thought it was pretty good even though
I only tried one car & one track for a few hours, and every new game has
it's own menu system to battle with, not just your baby. I had the same
problem with gpl when I first tried that.
It's just not my type of game. I don't like FPS's either but I don't doubt
that UT2003 is great for those that like that sort of game.
The crux of what I wrote was that if the reader is the type of person that
likes gpl, they might appreciate a fellow gpl'ers recommendation for another
sim.
Is that so hard to understand?

I've got about 300 laps on the game so far and still haven't really
come to terms with it yet. The cars just feel sort of numb to me, and
I've tried it with the various assists both on and off and it doesn't
really seem to help. I'm using the setups that were linked on the
GTR2K2 site and, while they help a little, they still aren't that
great -- it's just push, push, push...
Maybe as more time passes, I'll figure out how to do setups and that
will probably help, but if you think GPL has a steep learning curve,
this game's curve is completely perpendicular from what I can tell.

Get a friggin' life mate. And while you're at it, get one for me... can't
believe I'm going to send this and contribute to another pointless RAS
"debate". Next thing you know I'll be spouting racist towelheadisms in the
flight-sim ng!
Andrew McP
If you are talking about Doug Arnao's setups, it is just a matter of
driving them like he designed them to be driven. He's not a trail
braker, and he likes to tromp on the throttle as early as possible in a
corner. His setups work quite well if you drive that way - brake in a
straight line and then get back on the throttle to power it around the
corner. If it pushes don't back off, step on it harder! It really
works.
If OTOH you really want to trail brake into turns there are two simple
changes you can try. First move the brake bias a bit rearward. On the
360 I found that just moving it back from 58% to 57% made a huge
difference in feel. If it still feels like it is pushing too much as
you come off the brake, then increase the rear slow bump damping to be
the same as or slightly higher than the front. That will decrease both
brake release understeer and throttle on understeer, so be careful.

David, did you get this far down the post or did you just leap in to pick on the
"F1-2002 is no GPL" part of the thread?
For me the point of the original poster was to explain how F1-2002 can be
transformed by the GTR2002 into something that a fan of a sim like GPL would
appreciate.
If you look through some of the posts from the "GPL hardcore" on here you will
see that GTR2002 appears to sit quite nicely alongside GPL on their hard drives.
Your (at times well meaning) stance to enlighten this group that there are other
racing sims out there does mean that *just* maybe you have missed out on some
GPL fun. It is quite a different looking sim nowadays and if you don't worry
about the tyre model and consider it a sprint race there are enough consistent
racers out there on VROC to have a blast.
Just in case you are interested at how GPL has evolved check out:
http://jason.speedgeezers.com/evolution.avi
If nothing else it shows how alongside with the GTR2002 mod and others the
strength of the racing sim community and how much ability now sits with us as a
collective group of racing sim enthusiasts rather than being totally reliant
upon the game makers.
Cheers
Tony

I read a post from you the other day which showed how GPL has been updated.
Everything looked excellent. There wasn't anything that you said in that
post though which made me want to do some rib poking.

Oh, thats what he's all about is it? - I thought he was just some
foul-mouthed bigot who had nothing better to do than half-read
posts and jump on anyone who didn't appear to share his views.
I appreciated the original post and it was clear from the subject
header that this was a GPL'ers opinion on GTR2002, so
comparisons with GPL have a strong likelyhood of being made.
I respect anyones right to disagree with others, and to state
their own views but there is no need to be rude about it. OK,
so I've been a little rude back, but I think anyone reading DGF's
reply would have to make the same conclusions.

If you had read the readme a little more carefully you would have note the
distribution includes a utility to export your F1 2k2 player(s) to a format
compatible with the GTR mod.
GTR mod requires two specific settings, however. Make sure you have pitcrew
animations set to "low" and your quickrace grid position to "random".
Glad you enjoy the mod too, though.

F1-2002 and to the GTR mod. Speaking as a former GPL'er the first didn't do
much for me but the second has really got my attention these days. Great
mod.
As for DGF don't mind him; after all every village has its village idiot.
Every couple of months I dump my old blocked senders list as stale and start
it again. DGF is usually one of the first to make it back on to the list and
then the newsgroup is back to being interesting again.
Thanks for the interesting review

The point I was eluding to was that there is a strong racing sim
community as a whole. DGF's apparent determination to split it into a
"GPL Community" and the rest maybe to his loss.
He certainly can play at the foul mouthed bigot (very well!), yet those
that have raced with him on Rascar may have seen a different side. So I
take his rants on RAS with the proverbial pinch of salt. Though in
isolation I'd agree with your interpretation of the latest :)

Thanks for the tip! I should have read all the documentation thoroughly of
course, I was rushing to get out on track ;-)
I'll give GTR and F1 a good going over to see what I can get out of them
both, and hopefully F1 may grow on me in time. My original post was a first
impression from less than a day's experience. With a sim this complex it'll
take time to appreciate all of it, but the GTR mod just felt right straight
out of the box. Maybe it's the setups.

I agree. It's not a competition for the 'best' sim, it's perfectly possible
to have any number installed and enjoy them all, but every driver will
always have their favourite.

I only really block spammers but I have a 'twat' rule and a 'good guy' rule.

Hehehe... I know the feeling.
Here's another power tip: search the group for posts on F1 2k2 and GTR2002
FF tweaking by Haqsau.
Oh, and BTW: you are using the "super high" physics rate (half-rate setting
in your .PLR file), I take it?
Definately, Doug's physics and setups for the mod are it's main selling
point, but I find the AI much improved over the original game as well.

Another thing to consider Paul are tires. I have pretty much stuck with
one car. But when the new Force One Viper was released I tried it. My lap
times with the same setups were almost 3 seconds slower at Magny Cours. I
spent about an hour on the Force one and exited the online session and came
back with my 'regular' ART Viper. Immeadiately I was back down near my PB
times and then whoosh...2 more seconds below that. The only difference?
The Force One had Michelin tires and the ART had Pirelli's. Doug commented
on each tire brand, I don't remember the specifics(it was in the physics
readme) But for me at least, I have faaaar more confidence in a Pirelli
tire now than I do a Michelin.(which was constantly squeeling)
My driving style(or lack thereof) probably has something to do with the
difference in how each tire behaved.

Exactly. GPL may have its inadequacies, but of late I have become
pretty convinced that you don't have to drive it like an arcade game to
be fast, and in either case it is still whopping good fun. From now on
I will only play racing games that have the letter "G" in them. ;o)

While GTR's physics may not be fully on par with N2k2, the feeling of 'being
there', the immersion factor you get from this mod is excellent, because the
GTR team adressed other important aspects like sound adequately as well.
Anyone tried the Ferrari 512 yet, btw? :-)
I don't drive much, but GTR2002 gets the bear share of that time :-)
Of course, David, it's not GPL ;-)

Hey not even, moi? ;)
Seriously, I also thought the same about F1-2002. It's just that, modern F1
doesn't give me the excitement that more "normal" racecars do. I think only
Crammond ever game me with GP2 the sensation of driving a beast. Every
other F1 title seems sterile.
We like cars that are less perfect.
We like cars that want to take control over us.
We like it when the rear wants to turn around and start driving up front!
We don't like cookie-cutter tracks or cars.

Did you load any setups? IIRC Doug Arnao's setups run 58% brake bias,
so I'm guessing you were using the defaults. If you don't already have
them, you should pick up Doug's setups and the latest physics patch from
Simbin. Makes a big difference. You will probably still want to tweak
them some, because Doug's setups are designed for straight line braking,
but they are a much better starting point than the .hdv file defaults.

I got the physics patch today, but can't tell the difference.
I was using the default setup though. I prefer to set up my own cars
usually, it's all part of the sim experience but you have to start somewhere
& Doug knows his stuff ;-)
Thanks, Malc.
Great thought out, well written post Malc.
I have fallen in love with the Ferrari 360 at Road Atlanta and the
Lambo at Sugo (Please for the love of god someone remove that Damn
chicane.) I downloaded a sound mod for the 360 and was driving there
till 3AM. Road Atlanta is the best track out there for ANY sim. Feels
absolutly "right".
As far as being "Right up there with GPL" ,I think it's much better
than GPL. And I love GPL too.
You are right about Racing Legends having to blow me away when it
comes out.It will have to be pretty special to beat The GTR mod.
Great work Ian and Simbin and everyone else involved.

I've tried a couple of the other tracks now but basically stuck with
Silverstone for consistency. I tried at least one of each of the other cars,
and for now the Lambo is still my favourite, but the 360 is fantastic too,
really sharp and precise, easy to control with the pedals, not too much
power. Alot of fun ;-)

Two questions:
Just how much will punters be willing to pay the West Bros when stuff like
this is virtually free?
How much could the Simbin team have made from this if it were a stand-alone
sim?

Definitely seconded, or possibly four-hundredthed, considering the amount of
praise there's been for this mod.

Doug Arnao is a real-world race-track instructor for
groups like the Porsche and BMW clubs, as well as a race-prep shop owner, as
well as a SCCA National Solo Champion (in a wicked tube-frame 914-6), and
when he was helping me write "Four-Wheel Drift" I asked him abt.
trail-braking, and he said he avoided it with his students because it
required other-worldly car-control. He only ran across a few students who
could handle it, and only after mastering...yea, *perfecting* the
conventional brake-in-a-straight-line technique...would he allow them to
move up to trail-braking (at least with him in the car!). The most valuable
lesson he taught me about the in-slow/out-fast method was to do whatever it
took to get on the throttle sooner rather than later exiting the corner,so
as to carry the few extra rpm down the following straight. Nothing else,
before or since, has benefitted my lap times as much. Thanks again, Doug!

For me, the standard by which all sims are measured is this: does a few
hours with the new sim screw me up for GPL? That is, are they so far off
the mark that I have to start all over again and relearn how to drive in
GPL? Before GTR, only one other sim did NOT screw me up for GPL: Mobil 1
Rally Championship. I'm pleased to say that I can switch back and
forth--after extended sessions--from GTR 2002 to GPL--without having to
change my driving style, expectations, or technique.

BTW, there are certainly other sims which don't make you have to change your
driving style, expectations, or technique if you go back to GPL.

No, there are others. In fact, I was introduced to RC2000 by Michael
Hausknecht, another real-world racer (in his case, demon Ducatis), and a
once and former terror in sundry VROC leagues.

The in car graphics are really poor, have their
been any improvements in this area as of yet?
Kinda of blows the immersion factor for me. Other then that
even though the physics are so-so its a pretty fun mod imo.
Good job guys ! Thanks!

I was among those who "ripped the original RC2000 physics model to
shreds", even though I'm no hardcore GPL'er, and I stand by that
statement, the unpatched/untweaked version was "somewhat less than
impressive"
I have not however tried it with the patch and tweaks so there could be
a decent physics model in there somewhere, but as released, no thx

that worship GPL and won't give anything else the time of day unless it's
recommended by a fellow GPLer. I know how silly it's been lately with all of
the people around here who bagged FIAGTV3 into the ground and yet have now
suddenly done a backflip all because they've found out that GTR2002 was done by
a guy who was associated with GPL...but surely one more enlightened GPL nazi is
a good thing?

Driving an F1 on this circuit is a real blast! No matter what I
tried I could not keep the rear end from bottoming out up the
first right hander (chose a rear ride hight of 4cm and 2cm
packers to go with it ;-), but still the track is fun as hell,
great job. I haven't tried it in GTR2002 yet, but it should
feel even better in a real sportscar.
The F1 BAR actually gets airborne down the last hill before
S/F, crazy! Feels a bit like Flugplatz in reverse 8-)
Cheers & "guten Rutsch" everyone,

I tried the demo of RC2000 (having been stung and bought a previous
incarnation off the back of decent reviews) and it was *appalling*.
Absolutely no sense of there being any weight to the car at all. I was
particularly disappointed as I had an Ibiza GTi at the time and would have
loved a sim that had a rally tuned version... Are you saying that a mere
*patch* changed it from being what I thought was an unsalvageable pile of
dog-doo into a worthwhile drive? Can you give examples of how it was
improved? Is there any way to test drive a patched version? Would you
agree that the initial release/demo was a complete stinker?

Ya. That must be it.
You are a genius.

I presume a GPL nazi is a person who still thinks GPL is yet to be
surpassed? What's wrong with that? It's a *video game*, and if someone
gets more enjoyment out of GPL than any other "sim" is that wrong somehow?
There certainly seems to be a harcore anti-GPL club, though. What's with
that?

Of course it could have been that GTR2002 has benefitted from the team's
experience with the previous mods and the fact there is a new F12002
engine, therefore GTR2002 is simply a lot better than FIAGTV3?
Plus I thought the aforementioned guy was part of the FIAGTV3
development as well.
Of course then you wouldn't be able to match this to your stereotypical
views.

I only got ADSL a month or so ago so I've always missed out on these big
mods before now. I've never tried FIAGTV3 and never commented on it.
From memory, the only games/sims I've ever openly slated were GP4 and Warm
Up.
I tried GTR after reading great reviews about it here, racesimcentral and
other forums, but I don't pay attention to whether it was a gpl'er writing
or not.
I bought Midtown Madness, SCGT, Rally Trophy and NR2002 for the same
reasons, and GPL too in about November '98. I've lurked here for years ;-)
If you try to put people in boxes you'll always make wrong assumptions by
generalising.
Sims come in boxes, not the drivers.

Of course I was, I'm a fairly reasonable bloke and compare like with
like if at all possible, I've hardly driven GPL after they started to
patch it as I find Formula cars utterly boring and I've yet to install a
single 3rd party add on or track, aside from a couple of David Noonan's
early creations, which however doesn't mean I haven't been following
what's being going on in that part of the community and screen shots and
videos certainly paint a pretty picture, and btw, the patches that has
come from Papy, have they actually changed the handling of the cars ?
I know they introduced a higher minimum ride height, which didn't affect
me as I never used low rider setups anyways, but other than that
It's still on my HD as I admire the tech bits of it, and every so often
I take an Eagle for a quick spin around Zandy, but other than that....

RC2000 is good, after a gazillion patches and physics tweak to finally get
some feeling out of the car.

IMHO, the following that RC2000 has among the GPL crowd has less to do
with the physics (which - even fully tweaked - are a couple
generations behind something like Rally Masters) and more to do with
the ability to create a realistic experience in terms of the gameplay
aspects. You can run a full BRC on real BRC courses with realistic
damage (if tuned) and a simple yet challenging and fun repair/tuning
system.
I absolutely abhor the way the cars drive but there's no other game
that captures the essence of rallying, that is, long stages through
beautiful but brutal terrain which serves as a test of endurance for
both the car and the driver. Rally Trophy could have the most
realistic handling ever (altho personally I find Rally Masters and
Rallisport Challenge more convincing, if flawed) and it doesn't mean
crap because you're twiddling around 2km stages. If rallying really
consisted of driving indestructible cars for 2 minutes at a time, it
would cease to be a tier 1 motorsport.
>Same could be said about F1-2002 also <G> :)
FWLiftSideways=(1.0) // dropoff in downforce with yaw (0.0 = none, 1.0

RWLiftSideways=(1.0) // dropoff in downforce with yaw (0.0 = none, 1.0
= max)
DiffuserSideways=(1.0) // dropoff with yaw (0.0 = none, 1.0 = max)
And of course brake pressure set to at least 100. Not perfect, but
certainly not any further from being convincing/realistic than GPL is
with its indestructible brakes/tires and ridiculous slip angles. At
least F1 2002's ridiculous slip angles can be fixed by modifying the
above 3 lines.

Still not sure on exactly how to install this ----
The webpage says to "just put the contents of the .ace file into a new
folder called Road Atlanta".
But, exactly where in F1 2002's and GTR2002's menu structure should this
new folder be created? Does this need to be done twice? (Once for F1
2002 and once for GTR 2002?) And do I really include EVERYTHING from
the .ace file? (The .ace file includes its own "Season02" and "Save"
folders...)
Any clarification on this would be appreciated.

The latter part of the file has a section that has to be added to the

Yes, Steve. I love the authentic gauges in the GPL updates, letaher
stitched steering wheels, glare from the instrument glass, dirty mirrors
etc. It just gives the right feeling somehow. The only other sim to have
a similar effect is RC2000 - feeling isolated with your co-driver in a
