Great fun - thanks again to Eldred for organising and Herko for hosting.
Qualled second and got a good start. Running second and having a good fight
with P. Burke for a long time. PB had a spin and I was so busy watching him
I also slid off ;) Bent the steering and life was real tough after that.
Even though I was running first after Rene dropped out I just couldn't keep
the thing in a straight line. When I was down to 3 wheels I figured it was
time to quit.
Nice way to start the new year though. Grats to all finishers :))
New Year's GPL Nurburgring Grand Prix won by EldredP
Drivers recapped the New Year's Day GPL race at the Nurburgring organised by EldredP and hosted by Herko ter Horst. EldredP won through consistency after leaders crashed. A newcomer asking which sim had the Nurburgring was pointed to GPL and its modern patches.

accident, where one crosses a blind crest (or clear a blind apex) and find
an obstruction in one's path. Terribly unfortunate and, while, from my point
of view I had no indication you were in trouble in the turn and therefore
could do little more to avoid the accident than I did, I sincerely apologise
for dealing a death blow to your car. Probably very unwise to push your
button so soon after the incident as well, but I couldn't resist... sorry
bud. ;-))
Anyhow, even if that race had delivered a good result, that would have been
down to luck rather than to any good driving I did, especially in the early
part. I made two mistakes before this race even started. Number one was I
skipped lunch as I didn't feel particularly hungry after last night's
festivities and that started biting me on the ass about 2 or 3 laps in and
the second was I had a preconception about the start and first turn, which
dropped me to last place to begin with.
After numerous mistakes, which saw me lucky not to destroy the car nor bend
it too much, I started to twig what was going on on about lap 6. I really
started to make some inroads on John after that, but faith stepped in to end
the race for both of us. That's the way it goes sometimes.

Ah well, I just shut it all down and continued work on DeMONS/3.

I was in 3rd at about lap 8 or so when I spun on the last right-
hander just before the long straight. A ferrari came around the
corner and hit me and turtled his car. I went on down the track and
just after I went under the bridge at the end of the straight, my
engine let go.
Oh well. My best time was 8:39 during the race.

Thanks for the race, Eldred. (Although the change in servers threw
for a while.)
I waited ten minutes before joining: at that point there were only 8
or 9 drivers entered, so I figured I'd make up the numbers a bit. I
know the race was full by start time: I hope no one was disappointed
by finding the race full.
I started off slow (after warning everyone behind to go ahead and
pass me) and puttered around for a couple of laps before I realized
that people were dropping out like flies, as I was in something like
11th place.
I had moved up to 6th -- all due to others quitting, believe me --
when I turned in a relatively fast lap (for me) and started feeling
cocky. The powers that be _hate_ people feeling cocky: I slipped off
one of the easier corners and sideswiped a tree which removed my
rightside wheels.
But, looking on the bright side, I tried this race last year as well,
and had terminal brain fade on lap two or three -- vaulting one of
the fences and removing all four wheels. This year, I managed six
complete laps and went off on the 7th lap. And I only took off two
wheels! Gee, maybe next year I'll manage to last to the bitter end.

It look like Eldred is fast becoming a Ring meister! ;-)

Like last year, I had the race won if I hadn't gotten cocky. Instead I had
the dumbest crash ever on lap 11 or 12 while leading. Eldred did a great
job tho, consistency is what wins races !!

Well done Eldred ;-)
Unfortunately my virus scanner kicked in at 3pm (halfway through lap 2) and
I lost control of the car. Unfortunately I took out a Honda too. Sorry about
that :-(

I had fun driving with you. The Ferrari, right?
I was kind sad when you lost it. After that it was just me and off
track things to hit.
Just about the time John and Jan had their little discussion ;-), I
had a horrible time at the bridge. Careened of both sides and damaged
the motor. I lost about 1000-2000 revs. But after I saw that I was now
in a position to finish in points, I soldiered on. I blew it on my
last lap when I had another disagreement with the hedges and caused my
motor to smoke. I had to get over the finish line to score in 2nd, so
after I crossed the line, I stopped. I guess St. Eldred was hot on my
heels by then.
Nice win Eldred!

Yeah, that was me in the Ferrari. I got a bit of a chuckle out of how
we'd each lead for a bit and then we'd have a little spin and the
other guy would be in front. It was nice seeing another car from time
to time, though.

up EVERYTHING, but Herko ter Horst came through with a server for the race.

What simulator lets you drive the Nurburgring?!

Ack! Welcome to the newsgroup :) The game, it's more of a religion,
is called "Grand Prix Legends". It's made by Papyrus, is 4 old, but is
still the reference for modern simulations.

I suggest you try to buy it, or find it somewhere :)

Thanks, I am new.
Looks like I'd have to try to find a 3Dfx card too. :(

No need for that! With the years, not only has the community updated
gratefully GPL, but several people at Papyrus worked for free to update GPL
to the "modern gaming time". Which means is, while originally the game only
offered 3dfx and Rendition rasterisers, there are now OpenGL and Direct3D
rasterisers for GPL.
The Direct3D one is used by the vast majority of GPL drivers.
Check out papy.com like Remco said, you'll find the basic patches for it if
you ever buy it. But hey you had interest in racing simulations to *post*
on this newsgroup, which means you would probably like GPL! :)

Thanks for all the information! I'll look that up. I mostly just
want to drive the Nurburgring, and since I won't be able to do it

you might be happy to find out that GPL will run under WINE
