Careful with that axe, Nick 02 Jan 2003 03:55 UTC#83750
Ok, I decided to keep the Elitegroup K7S5A afterall, the salesmen said that it will run with an AMD 2400XP without updating the BIOS; it will run up to 2000. So I've got the board screwed in to an Antec PLUS660 case and the CPU into the board, but I can't figure out how to hook up the LED's. The manual for the case states to plug the Reset connect into the RST connector, the Power LED into the connector behind the RST, the Power Switch to the PWR connector on the board, and the Hard Drive LED to the IDE connector. I cannot locate specificly(sp?) where on my motherboard these connectors are located. The manual for the mobo has a diagram of the 10 pin FPI connector which is used for LED's and switches. The diagram states HD_LED_P goes to pin 1, FP PWR/SLP to pins 2;4, HD_LED_N to pin 3, RST_WS_N to pins 5;8, RST_SW_P to pins 6;7, KEY to pins 9;10. Can anyone see how to match these up? I'm a bit thrown off by there being two different RST connectors and I can't seem to find any PWR connector on the board besides whats located on the FPI panel which I assume is for the Power LED, not the switch. Lastly, how can I plug the Hard Drive LED into the IDE connector when that will be used for the ribbon connector for hard drive and CD-ROM? One question about my CPU(Athlon 2400XP). While installing the chip I knicked a real small(miniscule, really) chunk off one corner of the thermal material on the heat sink, the instructions said that if this material is damaged it !!!must!!! be replaced. Is this true? Or is Athlon just looking for a way to make more money? If this doesn't make any sense, does anyone know of a website(besides the Antec and Elitegroup sites, they are absolutely no help) or other Newsgroup that can help me? Thanks in advance, I know I sound like I'm whining, but I don't want this being done by any store(like CompUSA) and I would to like learn about this myself so if and when I do it again I will not have as many problems. Thanks, Nick
Hey man, I have the same motherboard and I've built a bunch of systems with it too for friends. Really good low-budget board that can be nicely upgraded. Anyways, the LED things are pretty weird at first. If you are looking into your case at the m otherboard, the header for the LED's will be at the very bottom of the motherboard and in the center. It will be the only grouping of pins that looks like the one in the diagram. I think each pin is also labelled on the mobo itself, so you'll know. For the LED's, you have to watch polarity. Meaning ground has to be on ground. If it doesn't light up the first time, just reverse it. You may also have one of the little plugs on your case as a 3-hole plug, with an empty hole in the middle, even though the two pins on the mobo are right next to eachother. You can just move one of the wires into the middle hole by lifting the plastic where it lifts (if that makes sense). The switches don't have polarity. "The diagram states HD_LED_P goes to pin 1, FP PWR/SLP to pins 2;4, HD_LED_N to pin 3, RST_WS_N to pins 5;8, RST_SW_P to pins 6;7, KEY to pins 9;10." So, the harddrive light + goes to pin 1, ground goes to pin 3. Power switch goes to pins 2 and 4. Reset switch goes to (5 or 8) and (6 or 7) Keyboard lock (which you probably don't have) goes to 9 and 10 I don't know what you mean by harddrive LED into the IDE connector. It just goes on the motherboard as I mentioned above. Don't try to stick it on the IDE connector!! I think the thermal compound on the heatsink should be fine. Providing it is on the edge as you mentioned. The Athlon XP has a reallly small contact area anyways. I've been researching this board to see if it's any good and came across this which should help you: http://pub65.ezboard.com/fk7s5amotherboardforumfrm10.showMessage?topicID=543 .topic Bought the board and an 1800+ today but as yet can't get them to boot... still searching for possible solutions. I think the board is DOA. Steve. If the thermal material you are referring is in the middle of the ceramic insulator (big part) and is the rectangle about 3/8" by 1/2" and it is nicked then you likely have a dead CPU. If its OEM then AMD will RMA (one time only). If it's retail then either retailer or AMD will warranty. GL Mitch
