World's most dangerous and spectacular roads

Joe62, researching a console racing game pitch, asked for dangerous and scenic highways. Suggestions included Deal's Gap, California Highway 1, Alpine passes like the Stelvio, the Isle of Man, Pikes Peak, the Cabot Trail and Peruvian mountain roads.

What are the world's most dangerous and visually spectacular highways? No, I'm not a misguided lottery winner. I'm researching for a video game. :-)

It's located in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of NY state. The roads are surrounded by hardwood trees which put on a fantastic color display in the fall. The corkscrew dive down to Stone Bridge (a narrow two lane bridge with 3 foot high stone walls on each side) is so scary looking that no one ever went off at that spot during all the early races (starting in 1948). Read Denis Jenkinson, "Jenks: A Passion for Motorsport" to learn about the European road courses. His story of the Mille Miglia with Moss is fantastic.

Highway 1 along the California coast, south of Monterey might fit your description. Jim Damien Smith wrote:

Try the mixing bowl in Springfield Virginia, lots of ramps, construction and wrecks...big ones. Another that comes to mind is Crossing Black Mountain in NC on interstate 40 and while your at it look at Fancy Gap on 77 in Va "Joe62" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > What are the world's most dangerous and visually spectacular highways? > > No, I'm not a misguided lottery winner. There is an 11 mile stretch in the Apalachians called, The Dragon, that is supposed to be very good. More turns than the old Nurburgring. dave henrie "Tom Osbon" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:ZzNS9.1630$[email hidden]... > Try the mixing bowl in Springfield Virginia, lots of ramps, constructionand > wrecks...big ones. Yep, I agree. Southbound from 101, tight winding road with blind curves through the thick redwoods eventually popping out onto the coast for some tight winding roads along seaside cliffs. Does it get any better? Well, yes, if you ban RV's!! -Tim "The Carvalho Family" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Yup, 129 over Deal's Gap. Been there, done that. (on my bicycle!) 318 turns in 11 miles, they say, but I was too busy trying not to get dropped to count 'em. Like being on a ride at the fair, and a lovely tune up for the 15+ mile climb to the top of the Cherohala Skyway. Oops, wrong NG... or is it? Nahhh, the road's always chock full of sportscars and Ducatis. http://www.tailofthedragon.com/dragon.html Plus, with plenty of trees to run into, cliffs to run off of, and a river to fall into, it definitely makes the cut for this thread! SB PS - I've taken Eau Rouge and Masta flat on my bike too; does that make me an alien? ;-) "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:1ENS9.280611$qF3.25279@sccrnsc04... > There is an 11 mile stretch in the Apalachians called, The Dragon, thatis

I think in total it's about 7-8 miles long, twisty, undulating, plenty of camber changes etc. If you like woodland and moorland scenery, you won't get any better (plus you pass the highest pub in England (yes, England, not the UK) at the top - called the Cat & Fiddle) Matt

Deal's Gap is nice, but it's fairly predictable. There are many Swiss mountain passes which will catch you out badly if you are not paying attention. Personally, I'd like to see a hill climb up the Stelvio Pass on the Italian border. It has a zillion corners. The Klausen Pass in Switzerland was a famous mountain race in the 30s, with the AutoUnions thundering up the gravel road at outrageous speeds. Stephen
Try the Rimutaka Hills Road North of Wellington in New Zealand.. Bike riders paradise - tight twisty road with a cafe at the top- Rimutaka Motorcycle Caf - Pie in the Sky - at 555m . Great road but in winter it has some of the highest recorded wind speeds on a public road in the world.... As an avid motorcycle rider, the pucker factor of just watching this dangerous spectacle is almost unbearable. Sega tried to capture it in Manx TT a couple years ago, but didn't really do it justice.

Cutting across the sides of the Sierra Nevada mountains while ascending to the crest look out the passenger side window of your car and DOWN about 5,000 feet. Reach the crest and look down in to beautiful Yosemite Valley... http://www.byways.org/press/byway_synopsis.html?CX_BYWAY=2302 - Dave
One of the more vivid "oh SHIT" moments of my life happened on that road. I was putting along in my '80 Mazda 626, enjoying the fall greenery. Just as I went around one of the blind curves a pair of crotch-rockets come screaming around from the other direction. Leaned WAY over. I don't think anybody was in any danger, really, but it was quite startling to see these two very loud, very fast moving objects appear out of nowhere, blast by me at what appeared to be a ridiculous rate of speed, and then disappear in my rear view around the curve. The songs of the two bikes hit a really cool harmonic as they went by. Gerald "Steve Blankenship" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:<[email hidden]>...

The saddle road on Big Island is pretty neat too. I don't know if you could really do the high desert and lava moonscape visuals justice in a computer game, though.

You guys are all close...but the the best is the Belt Parkway in NY.... especially after dark... It runs from the Verranzano Bridge east through Brooklyn into Queens. It is a very narrow, four lane highway (2 lanes each way.)... it is fairly windy for a major road. (In NYC "Parkways" were built to give motorist a leisurely ride to the State parks.) with some decent elevation changes. The armco barrier that surrounds the road is battered and torn from the countless accidents. While the speed limit is 50, that is universally ignored... People often fly down this little stretch of road in the low to mid 70's. Which due to the age of the road is really fast. And at night it just gets worse. Huge multi-car pile-ups are rare in NY, except on the belt parkway, where tailgating at high speed is the rule. This road is scary. And would make a great video game, afterall the AI would be easy. Just program them to run up your butt, and then cut you off when they pass. Cabot Trail, Nova Scotia, Canada, 300 km (190 miles). "the Cabot Trail winds around the rocky splendour of Cape Breton's northern shore, ascending into the majestic highlands of Cape Breton National Park. This magnificent highway is carved into the sides of mountains that rise high above the shimmering waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence." Absolutely beautiful in fall colors. Yes, there is adequate shoulder on this road so it gives the impression of being "wide" but there are so many off camber corners, 30km "recommended" speed areas due to the road narrowing through rock cuts on some very steep grades and enough idiots stopped around blind corners taking photos to make this a very interesting drive. I've driven it so many times that I can see every inch of this road in my head without any trouble at all and every time I've driven it I've had a "memorable" moment where I'm either swearing at a tourist or berating myself for trying to "make time" in a spot I know better than to try it... while hoping my heart will come down out of my throat and stop hammering away. If you wish to describe this as a "stroll in the park" then I would have to leave it as your opinion.... either way, it can be both a fun and scary road to drive. As far as the original posters query goes... I have travelled a fair amount and as far as "visually spectacular" go the view from this highway ranks right up there with any other mountain road I've travelled when the weather co-operates. Bright blue skies, snow capped mountains, and a road which takes you right past some truely beautiful looking lakes that you'll find yourself hard pressed to describe the true colour of the water afterwards... hard to top. Regards, Robin

Just driven on it... The Desert Road, between Waiouru and Turangi, North Island, NZ. Its in the mountains (a volcanic plateau actaully) so its always iced over, lotsa twisty bits, all off-camber, and beautiful scenery to boot.
